Chicho Terremoto / Dash Kapei

Al principio del otoño vino de visita el tío Javier, aunque ya no vino solo. Se trajo a la tía Katherine y al primo Mateo, pero dejaron a Zara en Perú. Llegaron cuando el tiempo aún era bueno, así que pudimos hacer muchas cosas.

At the beginning of the fall Uncle Javier came to visit us, although this time he didn’t come alone. He brought Aunt Katherine and cousin Mateo, but they left Zara in Peru. They arrived when the weather was still good, so we were able to do lots of things. 

A mí me hacía ilusión que viniera Mateo para jugar con él y enseñarle sitios en Canadá, pero lo cierto es que aún es pequeño y no fácil de controlar. Papá dijo que parecía Chicho Terremoto, pero nadie sabía de qué hablaba hasta que nos puso un capítulo de unos dibujos animados prehistóricos en Youtube.

I was happy that Mateo was coming, so that we could play with him and show him places in Canada, but the truth is that he is still young and not easy to keep in check. Daddy said he looked like Dash Kappei, but nobody knew what he was talking about until he played an episode of some prehistoric cartoons in Youtube.

Fuimos al parque, les enseñamos los alrededores de Richmond Hill, e incluso nos hicimos una excursión a las cataratas del Niágara. También coincidió que cuando estaban aquí era el cumpleaños de Gris, así que sacamos los trastos de cumpleaños y lo celebramos todos juntos.

We went to the park, we showed them around Richmond Hill, and even we made a trip to Niagara Falls. It coincided that Gris’ birthday was during those days, so we broke out the birthday stuff and we celebrated it all together. 

En el colegio, como siempre, me costó coger el ritmo y entender cuáles eran las expectativas de las nuevas profesoras. No es que el curso sea difícil, sino que cada profesor tiene su manera de enseñar y es necesario adaptarse.

At school, as always, it took me time to get the rhythm and understand the new teachers’ expectations. It’s not a matter of the course being difficult, but each teacher has their teaching style and you have to adjust.

Una de las adaptaciones, por ejemplo, fue la introducción del inglés. Llevo hablándolo toda mi vida pero no había tenido que escribirlo hasta ahora. Milagrosamente el deletreo y la gramática han aterrizado en mi cabeza sin demora, y por otro lado he seguido mejorando el francés sin interferencia. Se ve que saben lo que están haciendo.

One of those adjustments, for example, was the introduction of English language. I have spoken it all my life but I had not had to write in English until now. Miraculously spelling and grammar have landed in my head, and in parallel I have continued to improve my French without interference. It looks as though they know what they are doing.

Uno de los trabajos que tuve que hacer fue documentar mis días con un “amigo de peluche” que nos dejaba la profesora. Se llamaba Petit Bouleau y lo llevé a todos los sitios para que supiera cómo paso el tiempo fuera del colegio. Gris me ayudó a que se lo pasara bien.

One of the assignments I had this fall was to document my days with a “stuffy friend” that the teacher shared with us. He was called Petit Bouleau and I took him everywhere so that he would know how I spend my team away from the school. Gris helped me ensure he had a good time.

Este año por Halloween, quizá por la influencia de Gris, decidí disfrazarme de gato. Mamá compró maquillaje para complementar el disfraz quedó mucho mejor.

This year in Halloween, perhaps due to Gris’ influence, I decided to wear a cat costumer. Mommy bought makeup to top it up and the costume looked much better.

Nos salió un día bueno (al menos no llovió) y nos juntamos con otros niños del grupo del Busy Bee y nos lo pasamos muy bien recolectando golosinas.

Weather was good that day (at least it didn’t rain) and a big group of former Busy Bees got together to go around collecting candy.

Poco después, como siempre, llegó mi cumpleaños, no sin antes recibir la primera nevada del invierno, antes del invierno, y seguimos con el tema del gato.

Soon after, like always, my birthday arrived, not before we welcomed the first the first snow storm of the winter , before the winter, and I continued with the cat theme.

Ya no estamos para columpios, así que invitamos a mis mejores amigas a casa: Claudia, Donya, Christina y Angel. Lo pasamos genial, sin mucho estruendo, simplemente estando todas juntas con nuestras historias.

We are old for playgrounds, so we decided to invite my best friends to come home: Claudia, Donya, Christina and Angel. We had a great time, without much noise, simply being all together with our stories.

Me regalaron juegos de manualidades, un telescopio y un microscopio, y un regalo diferido de papá y mamá: entradas para ir a ver a los Raptors en enero.

They brought me crafts games, a telescope and a microscope, and a future present from mommy and daddy: tickets to see the Raptors in January.

Y mientras tanto, Diego, Gris y yo pasamos el rato con cualquier cosa.

In the meantime, Diego, Gris and I enjoy our time doing whatever.

Verano en España – 2ª parte / Summer in Spain – Part 2

A primeros de julio, exactamente como el año pasado, viajamos a España con papá y los abuelos. El plan era el mismo y ya sabíamos que esperar. Papá se quedó unos días y justo cuando se iba a volver a Toronto me dio un poco de miedo quedarme sola, pero los abuelos se portaron muy bien y al final se me pasó.

Early in July, exactly as we did one year ago, we traveled to Spain with daddy, grandma and grandpa. The plan was the same and we knew what to expect. Daddy stayed a few days and when he was about to return to Toronto I was scared to stay by myself, but grandma and grandpa took care of me and the sad feelings went away.

Lo que más me gusta de Navalacruz es cuando llegan los primos y estamos todos juntos, pero eso sólo pasa durante una semana, así que tenemos que disfrutar de todo lo demás que hay allí.

What I like the most about Navalacruz is when the cousins arrive and we are all together, but that is only for a week, so that we have to enjoy everything else we have there.

Por ejemplo de las excursiones a Ávila con los abuelos. A veces vamos a comprar, a veces a ver a algún familiar, y a veces simplemente a dar un paseo. Es un buen sitio para comer helados y también para tomar fotos, porque las vistas son espectaculares.

For example the trips to Avila with the grandparents. Sometimes we go shopping, sometimes to visit family, and other times simply to go for a walk. It’s a good place to eat ice cream and also to take pictures, because the views are spectacular.

Cuando los primos llegaron empezó la acción. Fuimos a la sierra, jugamos dentro y fuera de la casa, fuimos a la piscina, y aunque este día terminó volviéndose frío inesperadamente y nos pilló sin chaqueta, no nos importó mucho.

When the cousins arrived the action started. We went to the mountains, we played inside and outside the house, we went to the swimming pool, and even though this day ended up turning to be unexpectedly cold and caught us without our jackets, we did not care much.

También nos sentábamos a hacer deberes todos juntos, aunque he de confesar que no era lo que más me apetecía hacer esos días.

We also sat down together to do our homework, though I have to say that it was not what I felt like doing those days.

Fue una pena que este año se perdieran la fiesta de la espuma. Yo estaba un poco triste porque se acababan de ir pero se me pasó rápido en cuando empezaron las festividades.

It was a pity that this year they missed the foam party. I was a bit sad because they had just left but I felt better as soon as the festivities started.

Al final pasamos siete semanas en Navalacruz. Me lo pasé bien en el parque de niños y en el de mayores, dando paseos con el abuelo Pablo, en el campamento de verano, cogiendo moras, en los juegos nocturnos en la plaza, jugando con los niños del barrio y con los del campamento cuando los veía en la plaza.

In the end we spent seven weeks in Navalacruz. I had a great time in the children’s park and in the grown-up’s park, going for a walk with Grandpa Pablo, in the summer camp, collecting blackberries, at the night games in the town square, playing the neighbourhood kids and with my camp friends when I met them at the square.

La verdad es que estaba tan integrada que ya me conocía todo el mundo. Ya no soy la hija de David, sino que soy Avril y papá es el padre de Avril.

The truth is that I was so integrated that everyone knew me. I am no longer David’s daughter, but Avril, and daddy is Avril’s daddy.

Cuando volvimos a Canadá me costó un poco. Por un lado porque me daba pena dejar el pueblo, aunque estoy aprendiendo a controlar mejor mis emociones, y por otro porque tenía que adaptarme a estar en casa más tiempo.

When we returned to Canada it took me a bit to adjust. On one side because I was sad to leave, though I’m learning to control my emotions, and on the other because we had to get used to spending more time at home.

Lo que me gustó fue reencontrarme con la bicicleta. En el pueblo no quise montar porque es un poco peligroso, pero fue un alivio comprobar que no se me había olvidado y que aún estaba tan hábil como antes de viajar a España.

What I liked the most was to reunite with my bicycle. In the village I did not want to ride because it is little bit dangerous, but it was a relief to find out that I had not forgotten how to do it and that I was as fit as I was before going to Spain.

Poco después de volver empezamos el colegio. Este año es especial porque he cambiado de Michaëlle Jean a Beverley Acres que es el colegio para los cursos entre 4º y 8º y ahora la mitad del tiempo aprendemos en francés y la mitad en inglés. Al principio imponía un poco, porque es más grande y hay niños mayores, pero muchos de los compañeros son los mismos que en los años anteriores y enseguida me acostumbré.

Soon after returning we went back to school. This year is special because I have changed from Michaëlle Jean to Beverley Acres, which is a school for grades 4 to 8, and now half of the time we learn in French and the other half in English. In the beginning it impressed a bit, because it’s bigger and there are older kids, but many of my classmates are the same as in previous years and I got used to it right away.

Aunque sea un colegio distinto, afortunadamente está cubierto con la misma ruta de autobús, así que puedo ir con Diego por las mañanas, y regresamos juntos cuando volvemos en autobús.

Although it is a different school, fortunately we use the same bus route, so Diego and I can go together in the morning and return home as well the days we take the bus.

Ya monto en bici / I can ride a bike

Esta primavera he aprendido a montar en bicicleta, aunque fue un proceso en varias partes. Primero tuvimos que comprar una bicicleta nueva, sin rueditas, pero no pudimos ponernos a ello enseguida porque el invierno no se quería ir y tuvimos nieve hasta bien entrado el mes de abril.

This spring I have learned how to ride a bike, even though it was a multi-step process. First we had to buy a new bicycle, without training wheels, but we could not get to it right away because the winder didn’t want to go away and we had snow until late in April.

Fue poco después de Semana Santa, que fue también más fría de lo normal. Este año mamá decidió que nosotros organizáramos una fiesta para buscar huevos de pascua y nos lo pasamos genial. Papá escondió un montón de huevos en el jardín y entre todos los niños dimos cuenta de ellos en menos de cinco minutos.

That was son after Easter, which was colder than normal as well. This year mommy decided that we organized the Easter egg hunt and we had a great time. Daddy hid lots of eggs in the backyard and all of us kids found them in less than five minutes.

Cuando mejoró el tiempo pudimos por fin empezar a tener actividades más propias de la primavera. Pudimos ir al parque, hicimos una visita al zoo, empezamos las clases de tenis, y volvimos a la natación (aunque eso lo podemos hacer con frío porque la piscina es cubierta).

When the weather improved we could finally take on activities more suited for spring. We could go to the park, visit the zoo, start tennis lessons, and get back to swimming (even though we can do that with cold weather because we swim in an indoor pool).

Y a fuerza de repetir y repetir, un día le cogí el truco a la bicicleta. No sé muy bien qué pasó, pero de repente no necesité echar el pie a tierra a cada rato y al dar pedales podía ir en línea recta sin caerme.

And by repeating and repeating, one day I I could ride the bike. I don’t know well what happened, but all of the sudden I did not need to put my feet on the ground and I could go straight without falling when pedaling.

En el colegio las cosas también iban sobre ruedas. A estas alturas ya le había cogido el truco a todas las asignaturas y habíamos empezado las actividades para celebrar el final del curso, que era más especial que de costumbre, ya que era el último año en Michaëlle Jean. Parece mentira que hayan pasado casi tres años desde mi primer día. Por cierto, este año me dieron el premio a la perseverancia.

At school things have gone on wheels too. By then I had a good handle of all the subjects and we had started the activities to celebrate the end of the year, which was more special than in previous year, because it was our last year at Michaëlle Jean. It’s hard to believe that three years have gone by since my first day. By the way, this year I received the perseverance award.

Como el año pasado los abuelos llegaron a mitad de junio a pasar un par de semanas con nosotros antes de viajar a España. Para entonces ya hacía bueno y podíamos ir de paseo con ellos a muchos sitios.

Just as last year, Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves came in mid-June to spend a couple of weeks with us before going to Spain. The weather was good by then and we could go out with them to many places.

Por ejemplo, celebramos el cumpleaños de Diego en un parque de columpios en los árboles (fue un día un poco lluvioso todo hay que decirlo).

For example, we celebrated Diego’s birthday in a treetop playground (even though it was a bit rainy that day).

También fuimos al centro y a la isla en el lago Ontario, donde montamos en barco, visitamos la granja y el parque de atracciones.

We also went to downtown Toronto and the island in Lake Ontario, where we went on a boat, visited the farm, and the little amusement park.

Y al lago Wilcox a pasar la tarde en el parque acuático antes de vinieran papá y mamá a buscarnos.

And also to Lake Wilcox to spend the afternoon in the splash pad before daddy and mommy came to pick us up.

A veces veíamos los partidos el mundial. Mamá estaba emocionada porque Perú jugaba por primera vez en no sé cuántos años, y papá y los abuelos estaban pendientes de España, pero al final ninguno de los dos fueron a ninguna parte.

Sometimes we watched the World Cup games. Mommy was excited because Peru had classified for the first time in many years, and daddy and the grandparents were looking out for Spain, but in the end none of them went anywhere.

El Abuelo Pablo se empeñó en que aprendiera a montar bien en bici, así me llevaba a una calle sin salida a practicar bien los giros, y luego nos íbamos de paseo con la bicicleta al Mill Pond.

Grandpa Pablo was very keen on me learning how to ride the bike well, so he took me often to a cul-de-sac to practice turning, and then we went on to longer rides to Mill Pond.

Y si no, me montaba en cualquier bicicleta que nos encontrábamos por ahí.

Otherwise, I just climbed on any bicycle we ran into.

LOLs / LOLs

El invierno empezó pronto este año. Primero nevó y luego se puso muy frío, más frío de lo que normalmente es por Navidad. Yo creo que es porque la abuela Chela y la tía Mónica venían a visitarnos y tenían que llevarse un recuerdo realista del invierno de Toronto.

The winter started early this year. First it snowed and then it turned very cold, colder than what we normally get around Christmas. I think that it is because Grandma Chela and Aunty Monica were coming to visit us and they had to take a true winter souvenir from Toronto.

Fue la oportunidad perfecta para tirarse por la cuesta con un trineo deslizante. Lo probamos todos menos la abuela Chela, y aunque a Diego le daba miedo ir solo, hizo viajes con todos los demás. También hicimos un pequeño muñeco de nieve con la tía Mónica en el Mill Pond, y ayudamos a papá a quitar la nieve de la entrada a la casa.

It was the perfect occasion to slide downhill with a sled. We all tried except for grandma, and even though Diego was scared about going down by himself, he made trips with everyone. We also made a little snowman with Aunty Monica at the Mill Pond and helped daddy shovel the driveway.

El árbol de navidad seguía en pie, para disfrute de Gris, que al menos no la tomó con los regalos. Hablando de regalos, se me ocurrió que para que fuera más divertido podíamos hacer un amigo invisible. Yo me encargué de la logística e hicimos el intercambio el día antes de Navidad. Nos reímos un montón, primero con Diego porque me tocó a mí y le regalé un peluche del emoji caca, que no le gustó mucho. Luego con el descorazonador de fresas que papá le regaló a la abuela, aunque no sé muy bien cuál era el chiste.

The Christmas tree held up, to Gris’ joy, who at least did not go after the presents. Speaking of presents, I thought that to make it more fun we could so a Secret Santa. I took care of the logistics and we made the gift exchange the day before Christmas. We laugh a lot, first with Diego because I was his secret friend I gave him a poop emoji stuffy, which he did not like much. Then with the strawberry stem remover that daddy gave to grandma, though I did not know well what the joke was.

Cuando pasamos las vacaciones de Navidad en casa no hay tanta gente como cuando hemos ido a Perú o España, pero papá cocina muchas cosas distintas y acabamos teniendo comida para un par de semanas.

When we spend the Christmas holidays at home there is not as much people as when we go to Peru or Spain, but daddy cooks lots of things and we end up having food for a couple of weeks.

La Tía Mónica se fue antes de Año Nuevo pero la abuela se quedó una semana más. Como hacía mucho frío y no se podía salir, le pidió a papá que sacara la Wii para hacer ejercicio. Hacía mucho que no jugábamos con ella, pero fue empezar con un juego y acabamos jugando a todos. Tanto así que se convirtió en el mejor pasatiempo del invierno.

Aunty Monica left before New Year’s Day but grandma stayed one week longer. Because it was very cold and we could not go out, she asked daddy to break the Wii out to work out. It had been quite some time since we used to play with it, but once we started we ended up playing every game. So much so that it became the best winter pastime.

Un día fuimos a una pista de esquí para poner en práctica lo que habíamos aprendido con la Wii, y lo cierto es que no me costó cogerle el truco. Fue un poco caótico, porque estaba lleno de gente y cada uno de nosotros iba a un ritmo distinto, pero papá dice que si nos gusta que podemos ir el año que viene más tiempo. Yo digo que sí.

One day we went to a ski resort to showcase what we had learned with the Wii, and the truth is that it took me a while to figure it out. It was a bit chaotic, because it was full of people and each of us had a different level, but daddy says that if we like it we can go next year for a few days. I say yes.

Gris se está haciendo más mayor. Ya no es un bebé. En términos relativos es más o menos de mi edad. Un día le llevamos al veterinario y le hicieron una operación para que no se haga pis en casa. Se ha recuperado bien y está completamente adaptado a vivir con nosotros.

Gris is growing fast. He is not a baby anymore. In relative terms he is pretty much my age. One day we took him to the vet and they operated him so that he does not pee at home. He recovered right away and he is totally used to living with us.

Para el colegio he tenido que hacer una presentación cada mes del año. En el mes de febrero la hice sobre los gatos y en concreto sobre Gris. Fue la primera vez que me dieron la máxima nota. La verdad es que gusta hacer presentaciones y entre lo que aprendo en las clases de teatro, la contribución de papá, y las horas de práctica, me salen cada vez mejor.

At school I have had to make a presentation every month this year. In February I made one about cats and specifically about Gris. It was the first time I got full marks. I actually like having to present and between the lessons from the drama class, daddy’s contribution, and the hours of practice, I am doing it better and better.

A veces Diego y yo tenemos nostalgia de cuando compartíamos cuarto y se viene a dormir en mi cama. Se nos ocurrió un día y ahora lo organizamos cada fin de semana. Al principio le leía yo un cuento, pero con el tiempo ha aprendido a leer y ahora tengo que aguantar como lee en voz alta.

Sometimes Diego and I feel nostalgic about not sharing the bedroom and he comes over and sleeps in my bed. We came up with it one day and now we organize it every weekend. In the beginning I used to read a story to him, but over time he’s learned how to read and I have to stand him reading out loud.

Este año no viajamos por las vacaciones de primavera y mamá nos apuntó al campamento en el taller de Bita, el mismo sitio donde celebré el cumpleaños. Estuvo muy bien. La mayoría de los niños eran compañeros de Diego del Busy Bee e hicimos un montón de pinturas, casi todas de alta calidad. Ésta es una de ellas. Otra está ya enmarcada y colgada en la pared de mi cuarto.

This year we did not go on vacation for March Break and mommy signed us up for a camp at Bita’s art studio, the same one where I celebrated my birthday. It was great. Most of the kids were Diego’s friends from Busy Bee and we made a lot of paintings, mostly high quality. This is one of them. Another one is already on a frame handing from my bedroom wall.

En el área de entretenimiento la atención ha estado en las Aventuras de Ladybug, hasta que hemos desgastado la primera temporada en Netflix y todos los capítulos de la segunda temporada que he encontrado en YouTube. Estos dibujos animados están hechos en Francia, pero los veíamos en inglés porque Diego aún no lo puede seguir, pero al menos aprendimos algunas cosas sobre París.

On the entertainment front my attention has been on the Adventures of Ladybug, until we have worn out the first season in Netflix and all second season episodes available in YouTube. These cartoons are made in France, but we watched them in English because Diego could not follow them, but at least we learned some things about Paris.

Fuera de las pantallas, si hay algo que nos ha motivado a ir a comprar con mamá este invierno ha sido la posibilidad de incrementar nuestra colección de LOLs. Mis amigas del colegio también las coleccionan y he jugado un montón con ellas, en el recreo, en el Kids Connection, y también en casa con Diego, aunque lo que a mí me gusta es hacer acopio de ellas.

Away from screens, if there is something that has motivated us to go shopping with mommy this winter has been the possibility of growing our LOLs collection. My school friends collect them as well and I have played a lot with them, at recess, at Kids Connection, and also at home with Diego, even though what I like the most is to stockpile them.

Espabilando / Smartening up

Sin mucho tiempo para pensar en ello volvió todo: el colegio, el autobús por las mañanas, el Kids Connection por las tardes, las clases de piano los jueves, las clases de español los viernes, las de natación los sábados por mañana, y una novedad, clases de teatro los sábados por la tarde.

Without much time to think about it everything returned: the school, the school bus in the morning, Kids Connection in the afternoon, piano classes on Thursday, Spanish classes on Friday, swimming on Saturday morning, and a new one, drama classes on Saturday afternoon.

No me quejo. De hecho cuando no tenemos clase o un plan nos aburrimos enseguida. Pero la verdad es que llegó todo de repente y al principio estaba un poco oxidada. Yo creo que tenía la cabeza todavía en España y me costaba concentrarme en lo que tenía que hacer. El piano ahora me parecía difícil, no hacía muchos progresos nadando y el primer examen de matemáticas me pilló un poco desprevenida.

I’m not complaining. In fact when we don’t have classes or plan we get bored very quickly. But the truth is that everything arrived very quickly and in the beginning I was a little bit rusty. I think that I still had my head in Spain and it was difficult to concentrate on the task at hand. The piano seemed difficult all of the sudden, I did not progress much on my swimming, and the first math exam caught me by surprise.

En eso llegaron las primas Fátima y Giulia de Perú, que tenían sus vacaciones de primavera en el hemisferio sur. Bueno, también el primo Giorgio, pero a él no le hacía falta permiso, porque aún es pequeño. Con tantos niños en casa esto recordaba mucho al pueblo, lo que contribuía a retrasar la vuelta a la normalidad.

Around that time Fatima and Giulia, the cousins from Peru, came to visit us during their spring break in the southern hemisphere. Cousin Giorgio also came, but he did not need the break, because he’s still young. With so many kids at home this resembled the summer in Spain, which contributed to delaying the return to normalcy.

Estuvieron aquí 10 días, y aprovechando los fines de semana, la fiesta de Acción de Gracias y el buen tiempo, tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar las cataratas del Niágara, ir a una granja con actividades al aire libre, a los columpios, e incluso nos juntamos con Claudia, Luca y Clyde en casa.

They stayed for 10 days and, taking advantage of weekends, Thanksgiving, and great weather, we had the chance to visit Niagara Falls, go to a farm with outdoor activities, to playgrounds, and even we got together with Claudia, Luca, and Clyde at home.

El día que se iban hubo una tormenta grande. Era como si el otoño hubiera estado esperando a que se fueran para llegar y llevarse el calorcito extra que habíamos tenido por un mes y medio.

The day they left there was a big storm. It was as though the fall was waiting for them to take off to arrive and take away the extra warmth we had enjoyed for one month and a half.

Ese día papá encontró en mi mochila el examen de matemáticas que no me había salido muy bien. No se lo había enseñado porque sabía que no le iba a gustar. Y no le gustó. Pero lo que aprendí ese día es que estaba más enfadado porque lo había escondido que por la mala nota y le prometí que no lo iba a volver a hacer y que a partir de entonces me iba a poner las pilas.

That day daddy found in my backpack the math exam that I had not done very well. I had not showed it to him because I knew he would not like it. And he didn’t. But what I learned that day is that he was angrier about me hiding it than the score itself and I promised that I wouldn’t do it again and that I would focus from there on.

Después empezamos a prepararnos para Halloween. Un día fuimos todos juntos a escoger una calabaza a un campo de calabazas donde también había un laberinto en un campo de maíz donde nos perdimos durante una hora.

After that we started the preparations for Halloween. One day we went all together to choose a pumpkin at a pumpkin patch where there was also a cornfield maze where we got lost for one hour.

En Halloween me disfracé de señora de negro con un disfraz que le habían dado a mamá. Diego no tenía mucho interés en disfrazarse y se apañó con su chaqueta de Spiderman, pero lo que no se perdió fue el Truco o Trato. Vino Clyde a dar la vuelta y acabamos en casa de Donya, donde había más niños.

In Halloween I dressed as lady in red with a costume that someone gave to mommy. Diego doesn’t like dressing up and got by with his Spiderman jacket, but what he did not miss was Treat or Trick. Clyde came by to go with us and we ended up in Donya’s house with many other kids.

Unos días después tuvimos una sorpresa. Volvía de mi clase de español y Diego me dice: “hay un gato”. Yo oía los maullidos y pensé que era una broma, pero no, papá había comprado un gatito y estaba escondido debajo del mueble del teclado. Habíamos hablado de ello alguna vez, pero no imaginaba que llegaría así, sin avisar. Os presento a Gris, que como se ve hace juego con el sofá:

A few days later we had a surprise. I was returning from my Spanish class when Diego says: “there is a cat”. I could hear the meowing and I thought it was a joke, but no, daddy had bought a kitten and he was hiding under the keyboard furniture. We had talked about it sometimes, but I did not imagine that it would happen just like that, without warning. Here is Gris, who as you can see fits well with the couch:

Aunque me hacía gracia lo de tener un gato, lo cierto es que no sabía mucho de cómo cuidarlo. Por suerte papá tiene experiencia y en poco tiempo se ha hecho parte de la familia. Lo que más me gusta es que me hace mucha compañía.

Even though I was enthused about having a cat, the truth is that I did not know much about how to care of him. Fortunately daddy has some experience and soon after he had become part of the family. What I like the most is how he keeps me company.  

Papá decía que Gris era mi regalo de cumpleaños, pero no fue el único ya que mamá organizó una fiesta que incluía una clase de pintura. Me fallaron algunos amigos del colegio, pero no los clásicos de Busy Bee ni los compañeros de Diego. Elegí pintar un pingüino, y lo pasamos en grande.

Daddy said that Gris was my birthday present, but it was not the only one, as mommy organized a party with a painting lesson included. Some school friends missed it, but the Busy Bee classics didn’t, nor Diego’s friends. I chose to paint a penguin, and we had a great time.

Para entonces ya había tenido unos cuantos exámenes más: de matemáticas, de ciencias, de estudios sociales, y había tenido que hacer unas cuantas presentaciones. Como le había prometido a papá puse más empeño y he sacado buenas notas en todos. Además me leo un libro por capítulos cada semana, he aprendido las tablas de multiplicar y practico los verbos en francés todos los lunes.

By then I had had a few more exams: math, science, social studies, and I had had to make a couple of presentations. As I had promised daddy, I increased my effort and I have had great marks in all of them. Besides I read a chapter book every week, I have learned the multiplication tables, and I practice French verbs every Monday.

En la clase de piano también me apliqué y de hecho he empezado a practicar yo sola. Me preparé una canción que se llama “Calico Cat” para tocarla en el concierto de navidad de mi colegio. Al final no fue posible, pero me sirvió para el recital de la clase de Ms Liz, que estaba bastante contenta con el resultado.

In piano class I upped my game too and in fact I have started to practice by myself. I prepared a song called “Calico Cat” to play it at the school winter concern. In the end it was not possible, but I could use it at the recital in Ms. Liz’s class, who was rather happy with the outcome.

Tiempo de celebraciones, conciertos, canciones navideñas, actividades especiales, y la nieve asomando para anunciar que llegaba el invierno. En casa pusimos el árbol y los adornos antes de que llegaran la Abuela Chela y la Tía Mónica, pero Gris se pensó que eran un juguete para él y al final tuvimos que dejar el árbol sin adornos, porque no iba a dejar ni uno entero.

Time of celebrations, concerts, Christmas carols, special activities, and the snow showing up to announce the arrival of winter. At home we brought out the tree and the Christmas ornaments before Grandma Chela and Auntie Monica arrived, but Gris thought they were a toy for him, and we ended up leaving the tree without ornaments, or he would have not left a single one in one piece.

Verano en España / Summer in Spain

Y al fin llegó el día en que nos fuimos a España. Viajamos con los abuelos y con papá, pero mamá se quedó en casa. Al principio se hacía un poco raro, pero ya sabía cuál era el plan y las cosas fueron tal y como papá me había contado.

And finally the day to go to Spain arrived. We travelled with grandma, grandpa and daddy, but mommy stayed home. In the beginning it felt a bit weird, but I knew what the plan was and things unfolded as daddy had explained.

Llegamos a Aranjuez y estuvimos allí un día antes de viajar a Navalacruz. Allí se quedó unos días con nosotros antes de volver a Canadá. Nos enseñó cómo ir a los sitios importantes: los columpios, las escuelas, el parque de mayores, la dehesa, etc. El pueblo aún estaba tranquilo así que nos hicimos algunas excursiones por la montaña.

We arrived to Aranjuez first and stayed there for a day before we travelled to Navalacruz. There he stayed with us a few days before going back to Canada. He showed us important places: the playground, the school, the grown-up playground, the meadows, etc. The village was still quiet so we went for a couple of trips to the mountains.

El día que se fue lloré un poquito en la estación, pero se me pasó rápido. A partir de ese día es como si los abuelos fueran papá y mamá para nosotros. Enseguida organizamos una rutina diaria: campamento de verano en las escuelas por la mañana, helado después de comer, siesta si queríamos salir por la noche, deberes, paseo, y juegos en la plaza después de cenar.

The day that he left I cried a little at the train station, but I got better quickly. From that day on it was as though grandma and grandpa were mommy and daddy for us. We soon organized a daily routine: summer camp at the school in the morning, ice cream after lunch, nap if we wanted to go out at night, homework, stroll, and games at the town square after dinner.

La cosa se puso más interesante cuando llegaron los primos. No sólo éramos más en casa para jugar, sino que también llegó más gente y empezaron a organizar actividades en el pueblo: verbenas, ferias y juegos. No había tregua para la diversión.

Things turned more interesting when the cousins arrived. Not only we were more at home to play, but also more people arrived to the village and started to organize activities: open-air dances, fairs, and games. There was no downtime for fun.

Los primos se acababan de enterar de que tenían que mudarse de Holanda a Portland en Estados Unidos. Los tíos tuvieron que ir allí para buscar casa y los primos se quedaron con nosotros una semana más. Los abuelos estaban un poco cansados con tanto ajetreo, pero estábamos bien organizados. Los tíos de papá también vinieron a visitarnos. La tía Carmen trajo ropa para todos y el tío Esteban dijo que si no hubiera sido por la edad se habría unido a la pandilla.

The cousins had just found out that they needed to move from the Netherlands to Portland in the United States. Their parents had to go there to find a place to leave and the cousins stayed one more week with us. Grandma and grandpa were a little tired with so many people, but we were well organized. Daddy’s uncles and aunts also came to visit us. Aunt Carmen brought clothes for everyone and Uncle Esteban said that if it hadn't been for his age he would have joined the gang.

Esos días fueron la cúspide de la excitación. Poco después se fueron los primos y más tarde llegaron papá y mamá después de haber ido a visitar algunos países que no conocían. Estaba muy contenta de verlos y tenía muchas cosas que contarles, pero por las noches estaba triste porque me daba cuenta de que estaba acabando el verano y me daba mucha pena.

Those days were the apex of my excitement. Soon after the cousins left and later daddy and mommy arrived after having gone to visit countries that they did not know. I was very happy to see them and I had so much to tell them, but at night I was sad because I realized that the summer was coming to an end and I just felt sorrow.

Todavía nos quedaban cosas por hacer, como ir a la montaña donde ya no hay carreteras, bañarnos en el río, o cazar renacuajos, pero se notaba que estábamos de recogida: el campamento se acababa, ya no había verbenas, y mucha gente que se iba ya no volvía.

We still had things to do, like going to the mountains where the roads don’t get you, bathing in the river, or chasing tadpoles, but you could tell we were on the way out: the summer camp closed, there were no more open-air dances, and many people who left did not return.

Ha sido una experiencia muy bonita. No sólo los recuerdos de haber jugado con los primos y otros niños. Me gustaba ir con el abuelo Pablo a comprar o acompañarle a la máquina que le daba dinero. Me gustaba que pudiera salir de casa e ir a jugar al parque o a la plaza. Me gustaba ver los partidos de fútbol o de tenis con el abuelo. Me gustaba ir a comprar el pan o el helado yo sola, con mi propio dinero y traer bien las vueltas. Y me ha gustado aprender mejor a hablar en español, que allí era más difícil que en la clase de la señorita Marcela en Canadá.

It has been a beautiful experience for me. Not only the memories of playing with the cousins and other kids. I liked to go grocery shopping with Grandpa Pablo or going with him to the money giving machine. I liked that I could go out and play in the playground or the square. I liked to watch soccer and tennis games with grandpa. I liked to go buy bread or an ice cream by myself, with my own money and bring the correct change. And I have enjoyed learning to speak Spanish better, which was more difficult than the lessons with Miss Marcela in Canada.

Volvimos a casa a Richmond Hill con una semana de campamento urbano para ajustarnos antes de volver al colegio. Un niño me dijo que también había estado de vacaciones en España. Le pregunté que dónde y me dijo que en Madrid y Barcelona, y ni siquiera sabía dónde estaba Navalacruz. Si no ha visto Navalacruz, no ha visto nada. Yo ya estoy haciendo planes para el verano que viene.

We arrived home in Richmond Hill with a week of urban summer camp to adjust before going to school. I ran into a boy who told me that had been in Spain on holidays. I asked him that where in Spain, and he said that Madrid and Barcelona, and he didn’t even know where Navalacruz was. If he has not seen Navalacruz, he has not seen anything. I am already making plans for next summer.

Primavera musical / Musical spring

El final del curso es como bajar un tobogán: a partir del mes de abril empiezan las excursiones, los conciertos, las ferias y también el buen tiempo, y cuando te quieres dar cuenta la primavera se ha pasado y llega el verano.

The end of the school year is like going down a slide: after April we start having day trips, concerts, fairs and good weather, and without realizing the spring is over and the summer is here.

El primer evento de la primavera es casi siempre la Semana Santa. Mamá había hablado alguna vez de planear una búsqueda de huevos de pascua, pero hasta este año no lo habíamos hecho nunca. Nos invitaron a casa de Clyde, donde durante cinco frenéticos minutos revolvimos el jardín entero para encontrar nuestros tesoros de chocolate.

The first event in spring is normally Easter. Mommy had sometimes talked about having an egg hunt, but until this year we had never had one. We were invited to Clyde’s house, where we turned the garden upside down in five frantic minutes to find our chocolate treasures.

El lunes de Pascua Papá y Mamá se cogieron el día libre y nos fuimos al Museo de Ciencias de Ontario. No es para ir todos los días, pero siempre que vamos encontramos algo distinto con lo que jugar y aprender. Y esta vez me vino bien para prepararme, ya que fuimos de excursión con el colegio unas semanas más tarde.

On Easter Monday Daddy and Mommy took the day off and we went to the Ontario Science Centre. It is not a place to go every day, but every time we go we find something different to play with and learn. This time it was convenient to get ready for the visit we had a few weeks later with my class.

Durante la primavera seguimos las clases de piano. Cambiamos a los jueves por la noche porque a Miss Liz no le venía bien el sábado y se hizo un poco más difícil seguir el ritmo, ya que a veces tenía conflictos, como pasó con la noche de las matemáticas o con el concierto de fin de curso.

During the spring we carried on with our piano lessons. We changed to Thursdays at night because Saturdays did not work well for Miss Liz and it was more difficult to keep up with them, given that I had conflicts from time to time, like it happened with math night or the year-end concert.

De todos modos he aprendido mucho. En los últimos meses mucho más, ya que pasamos de tocar escalas en Do Mayor a aprender Sol Mayor, Re Mayor, Fa Mayor e incluso Do menor. Y antes de acabar las clases tuvimos un recital, para el que elegí dos canciones, entre ella un trozo de la quinta sinfonía de Beethoven.

In any case I have learned a lot. In the last months much more, as we went from playing scales in C Major to learn G Major, D Major, F Major and even C minor. And before finishing the year we had a recital, where I could choose two songs, one of them a segment of Beethoven’s 9^th Symphony.

Hablando de música, tuve que preparar canciones para cantar en un par de conciertos en el colegio, incluida una actuación especial para celebrar el 150 cumpleaños de Canadá. La verdad es que me gusta cantar. Papá y mamá me dijeron que si me gustaba tanto por qué no me apuntaba al coro, y sin pensarlo más lo hice, y aún me dio tiempo antes de acabar el curso a cantar “Unforgettable”, que en francés se dice “Inoubliable” para despedir a nuestra bibliotecaria que se jubilaba.

Speaking of music, I had to prepare songs to sing at a couple of school concerts, including a special performance to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The truth is that I like to sing. Daddy and Mommy said that if I liked it so much why didn’t I sign up for the choir, and without thinking it much so I did, and I had time before the year was over to sing “Unforgettable”, “Inoubliable” in French, to say good-bye to our librarian who was retiring.

Para hacer un poco de deporte Papá nos apuntó a Diego y a mí a clases de tenis en el club en el que juega. Nos dejaban por primera vez ir a los dos juntos y nos lo pasamos muy bien, tanto que el curso se me hizo muy corto.

On the sports front Daddy signed Diego and I up to tennis classes in the same club where he plays. It was the first time that Diego and I could go together and we had a great time, so much so that the course went by very fast.

Y mientras en clase los dictados se pasaban sin tanto protocolo, en matemáticas aprendía pesos y medidas, geometría, series numéricas, monedas, fracciones e incluso estadística, tenía tests de ciencias naturales y de ciencias sociales, y al final Madame Tajahmady me dijo que estaba mejorando mucho con el paso del curso.

And meanwhile in school the dictation exercises passed with less protocol, in math we learned measurements, geometry, number series, money math, fractions and even statistics, I had to do science and social studies tests, and at the end Madame Tajahmady told me that I had improved a lot during the year.

A finales de junio llegaron los abuelos, que venían a conocer la casa renovada y a pasar unos días con nosotros antes de nuestras vacaciones de verano en España. Aunque decían que no tenían ganas de mucho trote nos dio tiempo a hacer un poco de todo: fuimos a ver los Blue Jays, al Niágara, al centro, al Acuario, y sobre todo a dar paseos en diferentes parques.

At the end of June Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves arrived and had the chance to see our renovated house and spend some time with us before our summer holidays in Spain. Even though they said they did not feel like doing a lot, we had time to many things: we went to see the Blue Jays, visited Niagara, downtown Toronto, the Aquarium, and mostly went for walks to different parks.

Al Abuelo Pablo le gusta hacer fotos, tanto o más que a la Abuela Chela, y a veces me decía que posase para sacar muchas fotos de un sitio y luego nos sentábamos juntos a hacer una vídeo-composición. Hicimos una de la casa, otra de nuestro paseo a Kleinsburg, otra del viaje al centro, otra del día de Canadá en Stouffville, y unas cuentas del cumpleaños de Diego.

Grandpa Pablo likes to take photos, even more than Grandma Chela, and he sometimes asked me to pose to take many pictures in one place, which we turned later into a video-composition. We did one of the house, another one of a trip to Kleinsburg, another from downtown, another from Canada Day in Stouffville, and a few from Diego’s birthday.

Respecto a cumpleaños, he tenido unos cuantos en las últimas semanas, pero ninguno como el de Diego. Mamá decidió celebrarlo en casa con un grupo pequeño de amigos. Tuvimos tiempo de jugar dentro en el sótano, de jugar en el jardín, hacer manualidades, comer, y pasarlo en grande con la piñata, que no sé cómo aguantó tanto con los palos que le daban Luca y Claudia.

As it relates to birthdays, I have had a few in the last Weeks, but none like Diego’s. Mommy decided to celebrate it at home with a small group of friends. We had time to play inside in the basement, to play outside in the backyard, do some crafts, eat, and have a blast with the piñata, which I don’t know how was able to hold on for so long with the hits it received from Luca and Claudia.  

Y sin mucha más tregua ponemos rumbo a España a pasar unas vacaciones largas de verano por primera vez. ¡Toda una aventura!

And without further ado we head to Spain to spend a long summer vacation away from home for the first time. What and adventure!
