El verano empezó sin mi móvil, aunque mamá me dejó uno antiguo para ir practicando. Como hace unos años, fuimos todos a la playa antes de ir a Navalacruz. Alquilamos una casa en Menorca y pasamos unos días de sol, mar y tapas para coger tono.
The summer started
without my cellphone, although mommy lent me and old one to start practicing.
Like a couple of years ago, we went all together to the beach before going to
Navalacruz. We rented a house in Menorca, and we spent a few days of sun, sea
and tapas to warm up.
Al llegar al pueblo coincidimos con los primos, que llevaban un par de semanas de tour por España. Habíamos quedado allí para celebrar el 50 aniversario de boda de los abuelos, aunque con un poco de retraso. Originalmente se suponía que iba a ser un crucero, pero primero por el COVID y luego porque no sea que el COVID, al final lo sustituimos por un día comiendo todos juntos en Ávila.
When we arrived to Navalacruz
we met with the cousins, who were already on tour in Spain for a couple of
weeks. We had agreed to meet to celebrate the grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary, albeit a few months late. Originally, we were supposed to
go on a cruise, but first because of COVID and then because who knows if still
COVID, in the end we changed it for a day together in Avila.
Pese a que no fue tan ostentoso como el viaje, los abuelos se emocionaron
mucho por tenernos a todos juntos. Lo más difícil fue cuadrarnos para hacer la
foto de recuerdo. No sé cuántas tomas falsas hubo antes de llegar a ésta:
Despite it was not as
big as the cruise, the grandparents were very emotional for having all of us
together. The most difficult part was to get everything right for the photo. I
don’t know how many attempts we made before getting to this one:
También fuimos todos juntos a la piscina, donde además de pasarlo en
grande, pude mostrarle a papá y mamá como el móvil puede ayudarme a ser más
artística.
We also went all together to the swimming pool, were on top of having a great time, I could show daddy and mommy how a cellphone can help my artistic side.
El resto del verano en el pueblo se pasó volando. Cada año conozco más gente y me parece más divertido y, de vez en cuando, los abuelos nos miman con una excursión a Ávila o una comida especial. El abuelo estaba muy pesado porque decía que mis camisetas y chaquetas eran muy grandes, pero qué sabrá él de lo que se lleva ahora.
The rest of the summer
in Navalacruz flew by. Ever year I get to know more people and it is more fun. From
time to time, Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves spoil us with a trip to Avila
and a special meal. This year Grandpa Pablo was always complaining about my T-shirts
and jackets being too large, but I don’t think he knows much about what girls
wear nowadays.
Papá y mamá volvieron a buscarnos a finales de agosto, a tiempo para
celebrar el cumpleaños de papá con los abuelos. No se le va mal para 50, ¿no?
Daddy and mommy came
back to pick us up at the end of August, in time to celebrate daddy’s birthday
with the grandparents. He doesn’t look bad for 50, does he?
Nada más regresar empezaron las rutinas otoñales, aunque este año era diferente. Era el último año en primaria y cada hito, en cierto modo, era el último de una época. Por ejemplo, este fue mi último primer día de escuela cogiendo el autobús con Diego:
When we came back the
fall routines kicked in, though this year it felt different. It was my last
year in primary school and every milestone, somehow, was the last one. For
example, this was my last first day of school catching the bus with Diego:
Pero no todo fue rutinario. Nos visitó la familia del tío Javier, de paso a su nuevo hogar en la isla del Príncipe Eduardo. De momento van a estar allí dos años y luego ya se verá.
Not everything was
routing though. Uncle’s Javier family came to visit us, on their way to their
new home in Prince Edward Island. For now, they are going to spend two years
there.
También fuimos a ver al abuelo Javier a Dallas. Fue un viaje muy tejano, con vacas y vaqueros, aunque el objetivo era pasar unos días con él y distraerle un poco de sus asuntos médicos.
We also went to
visit Grandpa Javier in Dallas. It was very Texan trip, with cows and cowboys,
although the main objective was to spend a couple of days with him and distract
him from medical matters.
Luego el último Halloween en primaria, aunque creo que todavía puedo ir a
por golosinas el año que viene. Nadie
tiene por qué saber cuántos años tengo.
Then the last
Halloween in primary school, although I think I still can go trick-and-treating
next year. Nobody needs to know how old I am.
Y el último cumpleaños con mis amigas del colegio. Me seguiré viendo con algunas, pero otras probablemente tomen otro rumbo.
And the last
birthday with my school friends. I will continue to see some of them, but I
know that others will take a different path.
A esas alturas ya me había dado por el punto. Mamá me había enseñado lo básico, pero los tutoriales de YouTube me han puesto a otro nivel. De momento empecé haciendo unas cosillas para llevar de regalo a mis primas cuando fuéramos a Perú.
By then, I had already
started to spend lots of time knitting. Mommy had taught me the basics, but
with YouTube tutorials I got to a new level. For now I started doing little
things to bring as gift to my cousins when we visited Peru.
Más tarde le cogí el truco al ganchillo y ya he hecho bolsos, mantas,
tapetes, gorros, guantes y muchos experimentos.
Later on, I started
with crochet as well and I have made purses, blankets, table mats, hats, gloves
and many other experiments.
El plan era viajar a Perú por Navidad, pero a punto estuvimos de no ir.
Hubo no sé qué problema con el presidente, lo detuvieron, y la gente empezó a
protestar en las calles y decían que ya no era seguro. Al final, nos decidimos
a ir, ciñéndonos a la familia y sitios seguros. Uno de ellos era la Plaza de
Armas de Trujillo, donde celebran la Navidad de aquella manera.
Our plan was to go
to Peru for Christmas, but we were very close to staying home. There was some
sort of problem with the president, he was arrested, and people started to
demonstrate on the streets, and it was not safe. In the end, we chose to go,
sticking to family and safe places. Once of the was the main square in
Trujillo, were Christmas celebrations were kind of odd.
No habíamos estado en Perú desde antes de la pandemia, y los primos habían cambiado bastante. Imagino que nosotros también, pero uno no se da cuenta de cómo cambia. Estuvo bien poder ver a casi todos y conocer a los nuevos, como Joaquín, el nuevo bebé de la prima Katia.
We had not been in
Peru since before the pandemic, and the cousins had changed quite a bit. I
imagine we had changed too, but you don’t realize how much. It was nice to get
to see almost everyone and to get know new family, like Joaquin, Katia’s
newborn baby.
Para poder ver a Vicente, tuvimos que ir al hospital donde le ingresaron porque tenía mucha tos. Después del COVID nadie se la quería jugar y había muchos niños ingresados, incluido otro primo de mamá.
Visiting Vicente was
more complicated, as we had to go to the hospital where he was admitted because
of a nagging cough. After COVID nobody wanted to take risks and there were many
kids there, even another cousin of moms.
Y hablando de hospitales, papá se libró por poco. Se torció el tobillo de
mala manera jugando al baloncesto dos días antes de volvernos y por tamaño y el
color, parecía que lo tenía roto. Al final pudimos regresar sin pasar por el
médico, pero estuvo varios meses recuperándose después. Mientras tanto, se
perdió parte de la diversión de los últimos días de vacaciones.
And speaking of
hospitals, daddy dodge one by a hair. He sprained his ankle badly playing
basketball two days before our return, and judging by the size and the colour,
it seemed to be broken. In the end we could get back without going to the
doctor, but he spent a few months recovering after. Because of it, he missed
the fun of the last couple of days in Peru.
El octavo curso en sí fue un poco raro. Todos teníamos que aplicar para
ir a diferentes institutos, pero las notas que contaban eran las de séptimo.
Eighth grade has
been a bit weird. We all had to apply to go to high school, but the marks that
were looked at were those of grade seven.
Papá se empeñó en que hiciera el examen de acceso para bachillerato
internacional. A mí no me hacía gracia, porque me habían avisado de que era muy
difícil y que te quita mucho tiempo que no puedes emplear en actividades
extracurriculares. Aun así, accedí a hacer el examen. Quedamos en que, si me
admitían, entonces podía elegir. Si no, iría al instituto de inmersión
francesa. Nunca me dio la opción de ir al bachillerato en inglés y sólo después
supe que también era una opción, pero entiendo que papá no quiera que pierda la
base en francés.
Daddy wanted that I
tried the admission exam at the international baccalaureate program. I was not
very enthusiastic about it, because I had been told that it was difficult and
that it doesn´t leave much time for extracurricular activities. I still did the
exam though. We agree that, if I was admitted I would have the chance to
choose. If not, I would go to the French Immersion high school. He never gave
me the option of going to the regular English high school program and I only
found out that it was an option when it was too late, though I understand that
he doesn´t want me to lose the French foundation I have acquired.
En principio entré en lista de espera, pero unas semanas más tarde me
dijeron que me aceptaban en el programa de bachillerato internacional. No tuve
que pensarlo mucho. Ya le había dicho a papá que no quería agobiarme tan joven,
así que decliné la oferta. Papá a cambio dijo que no había excusa para no
hacerlo bien, dado que había elegido lo más fácil. Glup!
I was placed on a
waitlist, but a few weeks later they told me that I was accepted in the IB
program. I didn’t have to think about it much though. I had already told daddy
that I didn’t want to be overwhelmed as such a young age, and I declined the
offer. Daddy said that it was my decision but, in that case, there was no
excuse for not getting good grades, given that I had chosen the easy path.
Gulp!
Hasta ahora la motivación para sacar buenas notas era ver a mis padres y
mis abuelos contentos, pero este año me di cuenta de que sacar buenas notas
tenía ventajas sociales: la gente te escucha cuando participas en clase y
quieren hacer trabajos contigo. Ver Gilmore Girls me motivó también, y voy a
esforzarme para ir a una buena universidad, como Rory.
Up until now, the
motivation to get good grades it was to see my parents and grandparents happy,
but this year I realized that doing well in school had social advantages:
people listen to you more when you participate in class, and they want to be in
your group for assignments. Watching Gilmore Girls gave me an extra motivation,
and I am going to make an extra effort to go to a good university, like Rory.
Hablando de actividades extracurriculares, volví a apuntarme al equipo de
baloncesto y esta vez jugamos el campeonato zonal. Fueron sólo unas semanas de
preparación. No lo hicimos muy bien en la fase de grupos, pero en los playoffs ajustamos
y llegamos hasta la final. Lástima que no ganáramos, pero tuvimos una
experiencia bonita.
Speaking of
extracurricular activities, I signed up again for the basketball team in school
and we played in the zonal championship. We only had a few weeks to practice.
We didn’t do very well in the group stage, but in the playoffs, we made
adjustments, and made it to the final. Too bad that we didn’t win, but we had a
nice experience.
Además, he seguido con mis clases de arte los fines de semana y de actuación por las tardes. Este año además de teatro, me apunté a las clases de actuación para cine y televisión. Nos lo pasamos bien grabando sketches, pero creo que no es para mí. Aun así, recibí mi Óscar honorífico.
Besides, I have
continued with my art classes on weekends and acting on weekday evenings. This
year, on top of stage acting, I signed up for screen acting. We had a good time
recording sketches, but I don’t think it’s my thing. I still received my
honorary Oscar.
En el contexto de reencontrase con la familia después de los años de
COVID, fuimos a España por las vacaciones de primavera y nos hicimos un tour
visitando familia en Valladolid, La Rioja y Madrid. Nos quedaron un par de días
para descansar de la maratón de visitas, como este que nos fuimos a conocer Toledo,
sin duda un sitio único.
In the context of reuniting
with the family after the COVID years, we went to Spain for March break and we
did tour to visit family in Valladolid, La Rioja and Madrid. We still had a
couple of days to rest in between visits, like this one when we went to get to
know Toledo, certainly a unique city.
Después del viaje a España todo empezó a ir más deprisa a medida que el final del curso se acercaba. Papá y mamá querían que fuéramos unos días juntos a la playa, ya que no habíamos ido este año, pero no quería perderme nada: ni las presentaciones, ni las excursiones, ni el aplauso de salida del colegio, ni las firmas en el anuario. Sabía que el final llegaría de todas formas, pero quería estirarlo lo más posible, y cada actividad tenía más sentido que nunca.
After the trip to
Spain everything started to go faster as the end of the school year approached.
Daddy and mommy wanted us to go a few days to the beach, given that we had no
had any such vacation this year, but I didn’t want to miss a thing: neither
presentations, nor field trips, nor the clap out, nor the yearbook signatures. I
knew the last day would arrive anyways, but I wanted to stretch it as much as
possible, and every activity had more meaning than ever before.
Y llegó el día de la graduación. Hasta la abuela Chela vino para verla. Me
entraron dudas sobre si me darían algún premio. Estaba claro que no era la
mejor, pero yo lo había hecho bien y realmente me hacía ilusión que me
recocieran. Al final, sí lo hubo: estuve en la lista de los graduados con
honores y también me dieron un diploma por ejemplificar los valores de la
escuela. Estoy contenta y seguro que mis padres y mis abuelos lo están también.
And the graduation
day arrived. Even Grandma Chela came to see it. I wondered if I would receive
any award. It was clear that I wasn’t the best in the class, but I had had a
good year and I really wanted to be recognized. In the end, there was
recognition: I was part of the honour roll, and I received a diploma for living
the school values. I am happy and I’m sure that my parents and grandparents are
happy too.
