Ya toco el piano / Now I'm playing piano

El verano se ha pasado volando y casi sin darnos cuenta ya estaba otra vez cogiendo el autobús para ir al colegio.

The summer has flown by and almost without realizing I was catching the bus again to go to school.

Ya estoy en segundo curso y la cosa es un poco más seria. Tengo que leer 15 minutos todos los días y todas las semanas tenemos dictado y ejercicios de matemáticas.  Papá tiene que echarme una mano con los deberes y al principio tardábamos bastante, pero poco a poco le voy cogiendo el truco.

I am already on second grade and things are getting more serious. I have to read for 15 minutes every day and every week we have dictation and math exercises. Daddy has to help me with the homework and in the beginning it took us a while, but little by little I’m getting better.

Además, los viernes por la noche voy a clases de español, que son súper fáciles, pero que sé que me van a ayudar a hablar y escribir mejor. Lo que me gusta es que esos días, si papá o mamá trabajan desde casa, me dejan volver en autobús y llegar pronto para descansar un rato.

Besides, on Friday nights I go to Spanish lessons, which are super easy, but I know they will help me speak and write better. What I like about those days is that, if either daddy or mommy work from home, they let me get back on the bus early so that I can rest a bit.

También he seguido con la natación, ahora que Diego ha empezado a ir conmigo, pero las que me gustan de verdad son las clases de piano los sábados por la mañana. Hasta ahora el piano había sido un juguete, pero con la ayuda de Ms. Liz estoy empezando a sacarle partido. Así sonaba después de un par de semanas.

Also I have carried on with swimming lessons, now that Diego has started coming with me, but what I really like is to go to piano lessons on Saturday mornings. So far the piano was just a toy, but with Ms. Liz’s help I am starting to do something better with it. This is the way it sounded after a couple of weeks.

Durante el otoño hemos visto bastante a Claudia y a Luca. Poco antes de Acción de Gracias fuimos al zoo, donde lo pasamos genial, pero también estuvimos con ellos para el cumpleaños de Luca, Halloween y luego en mi cumpleaños.

During the fall we have often seen Claudia and Luca. Soon after Thanksgiving we went to the zoo, where we had a great day, but we also met for Luca’s birthday, Halloween and my birthday.

Mi cumpleaños lo celebramos en Zooland, un salón de juegos para niños. Se lo pedí especialmente a mamá porque quería que fuera en un sitio donde entrara mucha gente y que no sólo pudieran ir mis amigas, sino también los amigos de Diego.

I celebrated by birthday in Zooland, a children’s indoor playground. I asked mommy to do it there because I wanted it to be large enough to have many people and that it worked not only for my friends, but also for Diego’s.

Mientras tanto hemos pasado el otoño disfrutando del buen tiempo, recogiendo hojas, y preparándonos para la mudanza. ya que estábamos a punto de volver a nuestra casa, ahora renovada.

In the meantime we have spent the fall enjoying the good weather, picking up leaves, and getting ready for the move, given that we were about to return to our now renovated home.

Hablando de renovar, también cambié de dibujos animados preferidos que pasaron a ser “Lolirock”, la historia de tres amigas que tienen un grupo de rock y que en realidad son princesas y tienen poderes mágicos para combatir a los malos. Con un poco de práctica conseguiré tocar esto con el piano. De momento ha sido la canción más cantada de la temporada.

Speaking of renovation, I also changed preferred cartoon, which now in “Lolirock”, the story of three friends who have a rock band and are actually princesses and have magic powers to fight the bad guys. With a little bit of practice I will be able to play this with the piano. For now it has been the most sung song of the season.

Juegos de verano / Summer games

Este ha sido un verano de juegos, y no sólo porque eran los Juegos Olímpicos de verano en Rio de Janeiro, sino porque he aprendido a jugar a muchas cosas nuevas en los campamentos de verano.

This has been a summer of games, and not only because of the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, but because I have learned to play many different games in the summer camps.

Antes de empezar con los campamentos nos fuimos de viaje con la Abuela Chela a Kingston, Montreal y Ottawa. Fue sólo un fin de semana largo, con lo que pasamos mucho tiempo en el coche, pero nos dio tiempo a visitar los sitios más famosos de cada ciudad.

Before the camps started we went on a trip with Granma Chela to Kingston, Montreal, and Ottawa. It was just a long weekend and we spend a lot of time in the car, but we had time to visit the most famous places in each city.

Había practicado para hablar en francés en Montreal, pero resulta que todo el mundo hablaba en inglés y había algunos que hasta nos hablaban en español. Allí nos quedamos a dormir en el barrio portugués, donde llegamos en medio de un gran jaleo. No me pudo imaginar cómo sería cuando ganaron la final si se pusieron así por los cuartos.

I had practiced to speak in French in Montreal, but it happens that everyone speaks in English and some even addressed us in Spanish. There we stayed in the Portuguese neighbourhood, where we arrived in the middle of a big mess. I cannot imagine how it was when they won the final if they did this after passing quarters.

Como el año pasado, estuve en distintos campamentos de verano. Todos tenían sus cosas buenas y papá decía que era buena señal que cada semana el que más me gustara fuera el último al que había ido. Me gustó el campamento de ciencias, el de tenis, el de baile, y el de deportes. En este último había niños mayores, lo que me vino bien para aprender nuevos juegos de cartas, y también para lo que vendría más tarde.

Similar as last year, I went to different summer camps. All of them were good for one reason or another and daddy said it was a good sign that each week I said that that was the week I had enjoyed the most. I liked the science camp, the tennis one, the dancing one, or the sports camp. In this last one there were older kids, which came handy to learn new card games, and also to be ready for what came later on.

Ha sido un verano caluroso así que hemos tenido una buena ración de piscinas y parques acuáticos. Con el calor a veces es difícil dormir y algunos días empezaba a dar vueltas a la cabeza y me acordaba de Pre y de Miss Honey, a quien hace mucho que no vemos. Me daba por pensar que el mundo es injusto y que si todo el mundo se muere se va a quedar vacío, y acababa durmiendo en la cama con papá y mamá. Lo bueno es que por la mañana ya no me acordaba de nada.

It has been a hot summer and we have had our fair share of swimming pools and splash pads. With the heat sometimes it’s difficult to sleep and some days things started to come to mind, like Pre, or Miss Honey, whom we have not seen in a long time. I went on thinking that the world is unfair and if people kept dying it would become empty, and ended up sleeping with daddy and mommy in their bed. The good thing is that I could never remember any of it in the morning.

Otro juego que ha pegado fuerte este verano es Pokémon Go. En cosa de días todo el mundo caminaba como zombies por la calle buscando muñecos virtuales. Mamá se bajó la aplicación y cazamos un par de ellos, pero la verdad es que no había mucho más que hacer y en seguida nos aburrimos.

Another game that has hit hard this summer is Pokémon Go. In a matter of days everyone walked like zombies chasing virtual monsters. Mommy downloaded the app and we caught a couple of them, but the truth is that there wasn’t much else to do and we got bored of it.

La última semana del verano la pasamos en Foxwood, donde habíamos estado antes pero nunca lo pasé tan bien como ésta. Había un montón de cosas que hacer: deportes acuáticos, juegos, excursiones por el bosque, excursiones por el lago, y aventuras todo el rato.

The last week of the summer we went to Foxwood, where we had been before but I never had as much fun as this time. There were plenty of things to do: water sports, games, excursions through the forest, excursions in the lake, and adventures everywhere.

Con la sobrexposición a shopkins he cambiado de dibujos preferidos y también de muñequitos y me he centrado en “The Littlest Pet Shop”. Me los llevé al cottage y nos ayudaron a ganar el concurso de castillos de arena.

With the overexposure to shopkins I have changed preferred cartoons and little toys and I have focused on “The Littlest Pet Shop”. I took them to the cottage and they helped us win the sandcastle competition.

Había niños de diferentes edades pero todos jugábamos juntos. Jugábamos a las cartas, al volleyball, al frisbee golf, al dodgeball, al escondite, e incluso había juegos nocturnos. Hasta Diego, que era el más pequeño de todos, podía jugar. No sé cuándo volveremos, pero seguro que lo haremos pronto.

There were kids of all ages but all of us played together. We played cards, volleyball, frisbee golf, dodgeball, hide and seek, and even night games. Even Diego, who was the youngest of all, could play. I don’t know when we will come back, but I’m sure we’ll do so soon.

Saltando a la comba / Jumping rope

La primavera se ha pasado volando, como si las últimas semanas del colegio fueran cuesta abajo. Por un lado todo ha sido más fluido una vez que me acostumbré a las clases y los deberes en francés. Por otro, con el buen tiempo empezamos a tener más actividades festivas: excursiones, conciertos, ferias, etc.

The spring has flown by, as though the last weeks in school were downhill. On one hand everything has flowed better once I got used to having the lessons and homework in French. On the other, with the weather getting better we have started to have more festive activities: day trips, concerts, fairs, etc.

Uno de los eventos fue un concurso de saltar a la comba para recaudar dinero para la investigación de enfermedades del corazón. Me gustó mucho y practicando he aprendido a saltar con un pie, con dos, caminando y estilo helicóptero. Es gracioso, porque he tenido una cuerda en casa desde hace un montón, pero hasta ahora no sabía para qué servía.

One of the events was a contest to jump the rope to raise funds for heart illnesses research. I liked it a lot and practicing I have learned to jump with one foot, with two, walking and helicopter style. It’s funny, because I have had a rope at home for a long time, but I did not know how to use it until now.

Otra muestra del paso del tiempo ha sido el avance en la construcción de nuestra casa. Por fin, después de varios meses sin que hicieran nada, empezaron a desmontar el tejado y las paredes, y luego a montar todo otra vez. Se ve que aún va a llevar un tiempo, pero cuando vamos a ver la obra ya se puede ver dónde va a estar mi habitación y la nueva habitación de Diego.  Este mapache pensó que la nueva habitación era para él.

Another evidence of time passing by is the progress made in the construction of our house. Finally, after a few months without doing anything, they started dismantling the roof and the walls, and then to assemble them again. It’s going to take some time, but when we go to visit the construction you can see where my bedroom will be and also the new one for Diego. This racoon thought that the new room was actually for him.

Durante la primavera he seguido yendo a las clases de natación y no sólo he aprendido a flotar, sino que ya soy capaz de cruzar el largo de la piscina con un estilo decente. De todos los deportes que he probado hasta ahora es el que más me gusta.

During the spring months I’ve continued with my swimming lessons and not only I have learned how to float, but I can also cross the pool with a decent style. Out of all the sports I have tried so far this is the one I like the most.

También he ido a clases de arte, donde he trabajado en dos lienzos: un leopardo nocturno que le he regalado a la Abuela Chela y un lagarto camaleónico para los abuelos de España. También hicimos algunas figuras de barro, como un mono, que papá decía era el menos mono de los monos creados ese día en clase.

I have also gone to art lessons, where I have worked on two canvasses: a night leopard, which I have given to Grandma Chela, and a chameleonic lizard, for my grandparents in Spain. We also crafted some clay figures, like a monkey, which daddy said was the least monkey of al monkeys made that day in the class.

En el frente shopkin he estado centrada en las transacciones. Al principio no tenía mucho inventario, pero la Abuela Chela ha hecho una contribución importante que me hace negociar ahora desde una posición dominante, hasta el punto que he conseguido un shopkin de la quinta temporada. Mientras tanto Diego se encarga del entretenimiento de los muñecos.

On the shopkin front I have been focused on trading. In the beginning I did not have a large stock, but Grandma Chela has made a big contribution to it, which now allows me to negotiate from a position of strength, so much so that I have been able to acquire a season five shopkin. Meanwhile Diego takes care of the little kins’ entertainment.

La abuela llegó la semana pasada justo a tiempo de unirse a la fiesta: celebraciones de fin curso y cumpleaños de Diego. No tenía pensado ir a la del Busy Bee, pero me puse mala y no pude ir al colegio. Fue una vuelta al pasado y una oportunidad de despedirme de Ms Cathy que se retira este año.  El cumpleaños fue más divertido jugando en Jungle Land con mis amigas.

Grandma arrived last week just in time to join the party: school-end celebrations and Diego’s birthday. I had not planned to attend the one at Busy Bee, but I fell sick and I could not go to my school. It was a return to the past and an opportunity to say good-bye to Ms Cathy who is retiring this year. The birthday party was more fun playing in Jungle Land with my friends.

Shopkins / Shopkins

Este año las navidades fueron diferentes. Había oído hablar a papá y a mamá de que íbamos a renovar la casa, pero no sabía muy bien qué querían decir. Una semana antes de Navidad nos dijeron que nos íbamos a mudar porque iba a haber obras y casi sin darnos cuenta ya estábamos viviendo en la casa de al lado.

This year Christmas time was different. I had heard daddy and mommy talk about renovating the house, but I did not know well what they meant. One week before Christmas they told us that we were moving because there would be construction at home and almost without realizing we were living next door.

Al principio fue emocionante: nueva habitación, nuevo cuarto de juegos, nuevo jardín, un piano y un montón de sitios para jugar al escondite. Todo era nuevo para nosotros aunque la casa en realidad no es nueva, sino que tiene más de 150 años.

In the beginning it was exciting: new bedroom, new playroom, new backyard, a piano and lots of places where we could play hide and seek. Everything was new to us even though the house is actually more than 150 years old.

Nos mudamos justo a tiempo de montar el árbol de Navidad y para cuando pudimos abrir los regalos ya estábamos instalados. Yo quería tener unos shopkins porque mis amigas jugaban con ellos y yo no tenía ninguno para intercambiar.

We moved just in time to set the Christmas tree up and by the time we opened the presents we were already settled. I wanted to have some shopkins because my friends played with them and I did not have anyone to exchange.

Esto sólo es el principio, ya que tengo una lista de todos los que hay y estoy al tanto de oportunidades de incrementar la colección. Se puede jugar con ellos a muchas cosas y si no se te ocurre nada, puedes ver vídeos en YouTube donde te dan ideas. Diego hace como que no le gusta, pero casi siempre se apunta a jugar con ellos también.

This is just the beginning, because I have a list with all the shopkins there are and I always look for opportunities to add to my collection. You can play many different games with them and if you run out of ideas, you can get some from YouTube videos. Diego does as though he does not like them, but joins me often to play with them.

Antes de acabar las vacaciones fuimos a pasar un día al Museo de Ciencias de Ontario. Había un montón de exposiciones pero a mí la que más me gustó fue la del espacio y los planetas. Mira qué bien me sienta el traje de astronauta.

Before we finished the Christmas break we went to the Ontario Science Centre. There were many expositions but the one I liked the most was the one about planets and space. Look how well the astronaut suit fits me.

En el colegio las cosas van bien. Se han puesto un poco más serios con el francés y ahora la profesora quiere que hablemos menos en inglés y nos manda leer un libro distinto cada día. A mí me da un poco de corte porque no sé todas las palabras, pero es cuestión de tiempo y cada día aprendo a decir algo nuevo. Papá me ayuda en casa, aunque tengo que corregirle todo el rato porque tiene un acento extraño.

At school things go well. They are getting a little bit more serious about French and the teacher asks us not to speak in English and to read a book every day. I feel awkward because I don’t know all the words, but it’s a matter of time and every day I learn to say something new. Daddy helps me at home, although I have to correct him all the time because he speaks with a strange accent.

Durante el invierno he estado bastante ocupada los fines de semana con clases. Seguí con la natación, porque se me da muy bien, volví a las clases de tenis ahora que Diego ya podía jugar también, y nos apuntamos a un curso para aprender a patinar todos juntos. Los primeros días me daba miedo porque no podía mantenerme en pie, pero si papá y mamá no se caían no podía ser muy difícil.

During the winter time I have been busy on weekends with sports lessons. I have continued swimming, because I’m good at it, I went back to playing tennis now that Diego can also come, and we signed up to learn how to skate all together. The first couple of days I was scared because I wasn’t able to remain standing, but if daddy and mommy did not fall down it couldn’t be very difficult.

En clase tenemos un mural donde vamos apuntando cada mes cuántos dientes se nos caen en total. Parece como si hubiéramos cogido velocidad con el paso del tiempo, y el mes de marzo ha sido el mes con más dientes caídos: seis. Yo he contribuido con uno al record, que junto con el que se me había caído en Febrero me han dejado con esta sonrisa.

In my classroom we have the wall of teeth, where we keep track of how many teeth are falling. It looks as though we have recently sped up and March has the highest mark with six. I have contributed with one to the record, which together with the one that fell off in February, have left me with this smile.

El hada de los dientes se ha portado bien y también se ha subido a la ola de los shopkins. Yo le dejo los dientes en Edgar Eggcup (el shopkin de la izquierda en la foto) y los cambia literalmente por huevos. Primero me dejó un Kinder sorpresa y la última vez un huevo con ¡dos shopkins dentro!

The tooth fairy has been good and she has also jumped to the shopkin bandwagon. I leave my teeth in Edgar Eggcup (the shopkin to the left in the picture) and she exchanges them literally for eggs. First she left a Kinder surprise and the last time an egg with two shopkins inside!

Este año para las vacaciones de primavera en lugar de coger el avión como otras veces nos hemos hecho un viaje en carretera. Me gustan los viajes en coche, porque podemos ver un montón de dibujos en la iPad, parar en muchos sitios y ver cosas distintas.

This year for March Break we did not take a plane like we had done in the past, but we went on a road trip. I like travelling by car, because we can watch plenty of cartoons in the iPad, stop here and there, and see many different things.

Antes de partir hay que preparar la maleta, lo cual requiere su técnica. Como Diego es pequeño yo le ayudo a preparar la suya, pero básicamente una buena maleta debe incluir:

• Una colcha
• Uno o dos libros (entre Diego y yo al menos uno de animales y uno de planetas)
• Una o dos muñecas (llevé un bebé y un pony) y uno o dos coches (para Diego)
• Tu peluche preferido (yo llevé el leopardo y Diego el delfín)
• Algo para dibujar (un cuaderno para mí y la pizarra mágica para Diego)
• Un juguete más de esos que sólo te acuerdas de vez en cuando pero te hace ilusión encontrarte
• Ah! Y dos shopkins. Le dejé otros dos a Diego para estuviéramos iguales

Before setting off we had to prepare the suitcase, which requires certain skills. Given that Diego is still small I help him prepare his, but basically a good suitcase must include:

• A blanket
• One or two books (between Diego and I it must include at least one about animals and one about planets)
• One or two dolls (I took a baby and a pony) and one or two cars (for Diego)
• Your favourite stuffy (I brought the leopard and Diego the dolphin)
• Something to draw (a notebook for me and the magic whiteboard for Diego)
• One additional toy of those that you seldom think about but you’re happy to run into
• Ah! And two shopkins. I let Diego take two as well so that we were balanced

El destino esta vez era Washington DC, que es una ciudad con muchos monumentos, museos y parques grandes para pasear. En línea con nuestra selección de libros, visitamos museos de animales y planetas, y también fuimos a ver la casa donde vive el presidente de los Estados Unidos.

The destination this time was Washington DC, which is a city with many monuments, museums and big parks to walk around. In line with our book selection, we visited the animals and the planets museums, and we also visited the house where the president of the United States lives.

Nuestro hotel estaba en las afueras de la ciudad y cada día tomábamos el metro, que no estaba mal cuando iba vacío pero era un poco agobiante cuando se llenaba y teníamos que ir de pie. Una cosa que no entendía  muy bien es por qué siendo Washington tan parecido a Canadá había tanta gente hablaba en español.

Our hotel was in the outskirts of the city and every day we took the subway, which was not a bad experience when it was empty but it was a bit stifling when it was crowded and we had to travel standing up. One thing I did not understand well is why so many people spoke in Spanish, if Washington is so similar to Canada.

También visitamos zonas fuera de la ciudad, como este parque con cataratas donde lo pasamos bien de otra manera. 

We also visited areas outside of the city, like this park with waterfalls where we had fun in a different way.

Y para completar el viaje también visitamos a unos primos de papá y a unos primos y una amiga de mamá. Fue el complemento perfecto para una semana estupenda. A papá también le gustó y dice que volveremos cuando seamos más mayores para visitar los museos que esta vez no pudimos ver.

And to complete the trip we also visited relatives: daddy’s cousins, mommy’s cousins and also a friend of mommy’s. It was the perfect complement to a great week. Daddy also liked it and he says that we will be back when we are older and can visit the museums we had to skip this time.
