Soy una promesa / I am a promise

Este año esperaba la graduación del Busy Bee con más anticipación que en el pasado porque ya soy senior. Como somos mayores nos dan un papel más elaborado y tomamos control del escenario por un  buen rato. Nos aprendimos cuatro canciones distintas y cantamos a grito pelado. Esta es “soy una promesa” en la que yo tenía el papel de “potencialidad”.

This year I was looking forward to Busy Bee’s graduation with more eagerness than in previous years because I am a senior. Because we are older we have a more prominent role in the celebration and we take over the stage. We had to learn four songs and we sang them at the top of our lungs. This one is “I am a promise” where I performed as “potentiality”.

También era especial porque era la primera vez que Diego participaba conmigo y compartimos amigos y juegos cuando terminó la ceremonia.

It was also special because it was the first time that Diego took part of it with me and we shared friends and games when the ceremony was over.

Se da la circunstancia de que el cumpleaños de Diego siempre coincide con el final del colegio, así que pasamos de la celebración de la graduación a la del cumpleaños sin respiro. Invitamos a Claudia y a Luca y lo pasamos en grande jugando todos juntos.

It happens that Diego’s birthday always takes place at the end of the school year, and we went from the graduation to the birthday celebration without a break. We invited Claudia and Luca and we had a great time playing together.

La abuela Chela vino de Perú para pasar un par de semanas con nosotros y se apuntó a la graduación y al cumpleaños de Diego. Jugamos a muchas cosas con ella, en el porche, en el jardín, en los columpios o de paseo por la calle.

Grandma Chela came from Peru to spend a couple of weeks with us and she arrived just in time for the graduation and Diego’s birthday. We played games with her, on the porch, in the backyard, at the playground or walking on the street.

Uno de mis momentos preferidos era cuando la abuela me grababa en vídeo y yo actuaba. Les preparaba las sillas a ella y a Diego y el porche era mi escenario.

One of my favourite moments was when Grandma Chela taped a video while I performed. I set up the chairs for her and Diego and the porch became a stage.

Luego la abuela se fue y me dio pena, porque jugaba con nosotros un montón. Mamá me dijo que no me preocupara porque enseguida iba a llegar la tía Mónica y también podría jugar con ella, pero había una notable diferencia.

Later Grandma left and I was sad, because she played with us a lot. Mommy told me not to worry because Auntie Monica was coming right away and I could play with her as well, but she was a noticeable downgrade.

Otra de las novedades de este verano ha sido la logística para salir de paseo. A Diego le regalaron un triciclo por su cumpleaños, lo que despertó mi interés por la bicicleta, que hasta ahora sólo había sido útil para las arañas.

One of this summer’s novelties has been the strolling logistics. Diego received a tricycle for his birthday, which stirred my interest for the bicycle, which had only been of use for spiders until then.

Después de cogerle el truco a los pedales con el triciclo, tuvimos que comprar una bomba y papá le infló las ruedas a la bicicleta porque no había quien la moviera. A partir de entonces siempre íbamos a los columpios en nuestros vehículos.

After I figured out how pedal with the tricycle, we had to buy a pump so that daddy could inflate the tyres, because it was impossible to move the bicycle the way it was before. From then on we always went to the park on our vehicles.

Y así hemos pasado el resto del verano, entre el campamento del Busy Bee, los columpios, los parques y algún viaje a la playa del lago. Pero lo que más me ha gustado de todo es que Diego ha crecido y ahora es mi mejor compañero de juegos y le quiero todavía más.

And that is how we have spent the rest of the summer, between summer camp at Busy Bee, playgrounds, parks and a couple of trips to the beach on the lake. But what I like the most is that Diego has grown up and now he is my best playing partner and I love him even more.

Déjalo ir / Let it go

Este ha sido el año de Frozen, más allá de la tormenta de hielo y el gélido invierno. En el Busy Bee había oído la canción y convencí a mamá de que comprara el DVD de la película. Ya he perdido la cuenta de las veces que la he visto, pero aún me emociono con ella, y cuando oigo la canción “Let it go” se me olvida lo que estoy haciendo.

This has been the year of Frozen, well beyond the ice storm and the cold winter. I had already heard the song at Busy Bee and I convinced mommy to buy the movie’s DVD. I had lost track of how many times I’ve watched it, but I still get goose bumps with it, and when I hear the song “Let it go” I forget what I am doing.

Todos en casa saben de qué hablo cuando me refiero a Olaf y ya hemos discutido por qué me gusta más Elsa que Anna. También se saben la canción, Diego incluido, aunque para papá suena más como ésta.

Everyone at home knows who Olaf is when I bring up his name and we have already discussed why I like Elsa more than Anna. They also know the song, including Diego, though daddy thinks it sounds more like this one.

Este año tuvimos unas vacaciones de primavera especiales, porque nos fuimos a Japón. No tuvimos mucho tiempo para pensarlo, y como yo sólo había hablado de ello en español, confundí a todos en el Busy Bee, que pensaron que me iba de viaje para pasarlo bien (to have fun). Al final papá lo aclaró el día que nos íbamos y Mrs. Maria me dijo que nos lleváramos a Flat Stanley con nosotros.

This year we had a special spring vacation trip, as we went to Japan. We did not have much time to think about it and, because I had only talked about it in Spanish (Japón [ha-pon’]), I confused everyone at Busy Bee who thought I was going on a trip to have fun. In the end daddy’s clarified it the day he picked me up to leave and Mrs. Maria told me to take Flat Stanley with us.

Lo cierto es que al final se puede decir que fuimos a Japón a pasarlo bien. Hacía mucho que no veía a los primos así que no me podía hacer a la idea de cómo sería, pero una vez reunidos no nos costó mucho tiempo encontrar cosas que hacer juntos. Lo pasamos bien tirándonos por un tobogán gigante, corriendo por los jardines del palacio imperial, comiendo juntos, o montando en el metro.

The fact is that we can say that we went to Japan to have fun. It had been a long time since I had seen my cousins and I did not know how things would turn out, but once we met it did not take us much to find things we could do together. We had a great time going down a giant slide, running around the imperial palace gardens, eating together, or riding the subway.

Hicimos muchas visitas turísticas porque Japón tiene una cultura milenaria y montones de sitios bonitos que ver. Aunque muchas cosas eran dignas de observación: el metro, un restaurante, la habitación del hotel, o los accesorios de un retrete, los sitios más llamativos los encontramos en Kioto.

We made a lot of touristic visits because Japan has a millenary culture and plenty of beautiful places to see. Even though many things were worth watching: the subway, a restaurant, the hotel room, or the toilet accessories; we found the most impressive sights in Kyoto.

Mamá se cogió un resfriado los primeros días y nos tuvimos que dosificar, pero aun así nos dio tiempo a hacer muchas cosas, incluso recoger bajo la lluvia una piedra sagrada de recuerdo el día que volvíamos a Tokio.

Mommy caught a cold during our first days in Japan and though we had to pace ourselves, we had time to do many things, even picking up under the rain a sacred pebble as souvenir the day we were returning to Tokyo.

Los últimos días se pasaron deprisa y al final me dio mucha pena tener que irme. Les dije a los primos que se pasaran por nuestra casa el fin de semana siguiente, pero me da que no les queda muy a mano.

The last days flew by and at the end of the trip I was very sad we had to leave. I told my cousins that they could drop by our house the following weekend, but I have the impression they are not that close.

Cuando volvimos a Toronto aún el tiempo era de invierno y tuvimos tiempo para Frozen, en el sentido amplio de la palabra. Además mamá nos subscribió a Netflix, y esto ha supuesto más variedad en mis gustos por los dibujos. Los ponis han pasado a mejor vida, y disfruto viendo diferentes cosas cada semana.

When we got back to Toronto the weather was still winter like and we had time for Frozen, in a broad sense of the word. Besides, mommy subscribed us to Netflix, which has translated into more cartoon variety. The ponies have moved on and now I enjoy watching different things every week.

También me apunté a clases de natación. Ya voy yo sola (sin que mamá tenga que estar conmigo) y se me da muy bien nadar. Papá dice que ya me quiere ver cuando vaya donde cubre, pero yo no veo el problema porque la piscina a la que voy no cubre.

I also signed up for swimming lessons. I can go by myself now (mommy does not have to be with me in the pool) and I can swim very well. Daddy says that he wants to see me when I go to the deep end of the pool, but I don’t see the problem because the pool we go to is shallow.

Cuando por fin llegó el buen tiempo empezamos a disfrutar más de salir a la calle a jugar. Ahora podemos ir a los columpios y nos hemos hecho una excursión al zoo y otra a la granja.

When the weather finally improved we started to enjoy playing outdoors. Now we can go to the playground and have spent a day at the zoo and another one at a farm.

Uno de los momentos más divertidos del día es cuando jugamos a hacer pompas en el porche. Diego no las hace soplando, sino sacudiendo el brazo, y papá nos ha enseñado a hacer pompas gigantes. Cuando hace una, Diego y yo nos vamos detrás de ellas para explotarla y papá nos dice: “no, no, let it go (dejadla ir)”… y es que todo se pega.  

One of the best times of the day is when we play to blow bubbles at the porch. Diego does not actually blow, but makes them by swinging his arm, and daddy has taught us to blow gigantic bubbles. When he makes one Diego and I run to pop it and he says: “no, no, let it go” … which clearly proves that the song has stuck in his head.

Chocolate caliente / Hot chocolate

Este año pasamos las vacaciones de Navidad en España. No son unas navidades como las de Canadá (hay luces de colores y hace frío pero no en la misma escala) ni como las de Perú (hay árboles de Navidad y regalos, pero no está para ir a la playa). Lo que hay por encima de todo: ¡dulces!

This year we spent Christmas in Spain. They are not Christmas like in Canada (there is colourful lighting and it’s cold but not at the same level) neither like those in Peru (there are Christmas trees and presents, but not in beach weather). What there is above any other thing: sweet treats!  

Lo primero que tuvimos que hacer al llegar fue comprar ropa, porque se extravió la maleta con mis cosas y las de Diego, y no podíamos ir todos los días vestidos igual. Al margen del trastorno, toda oportunidad es buena para comprar ropa.

The first thing we had to do when we arrived was to buy clothes, because the suitcase bringing my stuff and Diego’s went missing, and we could not spend everything wearing the same garments. Aside from the inconvenience, any opportunity is a good one to buy new clothes.

Llegamos diez días antes de Navidad, así que tuvimos tiempo de acomodarnos a la rutina de los abuelos. La parte que a mí más me gustaba era cuando a media mañana el abuelo Pablo decía que era hora del chocolate caliente con churros. No me lo perdía ni un día. Pre también venía, pero el pobre ya no tiene fuerzas como antes y a veces teníamos que parar por el camino para que recobrara el aliento.

We arrived ten days before Christmas, so we had time to adjust to the grandpas’ routine. The part that I liked the most was when mid-morning Grandpa Pablo said that it was time for hot chocolate and churros. I never skipped a day. Pre also came with us, but the poor thing is a bit old and sometimes we had to stop for him to catch his breath.

Hablar en español me costó un poco. Yo pensaba que no sería un problema, pero cuando llegué de repente me pareció muy difícil y no me salía nada. La abuela Nieves se frustraba un poco, porque no nos entendíamos, pero poco a poco me fui soltando y al final las palabras en español empezaron a encontrar el camino. Lo que sí aprendí a decir bien y no se me olvidaba era “chocolate caliente”.

It took me a lot longer than expected to speak in Spanish. I thought it would not be a problem, but when I arrived it felt very difficult all of the sudden and I could not say a word. Grandma Nieves got a bit frustrated, because we did not understand each other, but little by little I started to relax and the words found their way to my mouth. What I learned how to say very well and I did not forget was “chocolate caliente” (hot chocolate).

La prima Katia, que está en España estudiando, se alegró mucho de vernos y quedábamos para pasear e ir a ver sitios. De hecho, se alegró tanto que acabó viniendo con nosotros de viaje cuando nos fuimos a visitar a los tíos y primos de papá en el norte de España.

Cousin Katia, who is in studying in Spain, was very happy to see us and we met often to go out for a walk and visit places. In fact, she was so happy that she ended up coming with us on a trip when we went to visit daddy’s uncles, aunts and cousins in Northern Spain.

Aunque ya hacía varios años desde mi última visita, recordaba vagamente los lugares y las personas. Lo que me tenía confundido era el número de tíos y primos que tengo. Ya sé que no sabía contar hace tres años, pero a mí me da que se han multiplicado desde entonces.

Even though it had been a few years since my last visit, I had a vague memory of places and people. What I was a bit confused about was the number of uncles, aunts, and cousins I have. I know I did not now know how to count three years ago, but I have the impression they have multiplied since.

Después de volver a Aranjuez regresé a la rutina del chocolate caliente con churros y seguimos comiendo dulces hasta que llegó el día de volver a Canadá. Durante un par de semanas habíamos vivido con la ilusión de que estábamos en invierno. La realidad nos esperaba en casa: nieve por todas partes, árboles caídos por la tormenta de hielo, mucho frío, y encima la calefacción de casa se había estropeado.

After returning to Aranjuez I resumed the hot chocolate and churros routine and we continued eating treats until the day to get back to Canada arrived. During a couple of weeks we had lived with the illusion that it was winter. The reality was waiting for us at home: snow everywhere, fallen trees due to the ice storm, cold temperatures, and to top it up, the heating at home did not work.

No fue fácil adaptarse al verdadero invierno, que al igual que el año anterior, se vengó de nosotros por intentar escaparnos unas semanas. Estamos ya en marzo y todo sigue tal y como lo encontramos, eso sí con la calefacción funcionando.

It was not easy to adjust to the real winder, who as it did the previous week, took revenge for trying to escape for a few weeks. It is now March and everything is still the same, but with the heating working, obviously.

A todo esto mi atracción por las princesas empezó a perder fuerza. El abuelo me grababa capítulos de la Princesa Sofía de la televisión en España, pero no sé si fue el desencanto de oírla hablar en español o qué, que poco a poco me apetecía menos verla. Ahora he pasado a la etapa pony (Mi Pequeño Pony) y papá dice que no sabe lo que es peor.

In the midst of all this, my attraction to princesses started to dwindle. Grandpa had recorded Princess Sophia episodes from the Spanish TV, but I don’t know if it was the letdown of listening to her speaking in Spanish or what, but little by little I did not feel like watching the show anymore. Now I have moved to the pony stage (My Little Pony) and daddy says that he does not know what is worse.

En todo caso, y aunque ya no vea los capítulos de la Princesa Sofía aún tengo el disfraz, y me lo pongo a veces para ver Mi Pequeño Pony (me gusta enseñarles mis juguetes) o para jugar a los disfraces, como este día que vino a casa mi amiga Claudia del Busy Bee.

In any case, and even though I don’t see Princess Sophia episodes now, I still have her dress, and I wear it sometimes to watch My Little Pony (I like to show them my toys) or to play costumes, like this day when my friend Claudia from Busy Bee came home.

Etapa Princesa / Princess Stage

Lo que hace unos meses eran escombros, trapos, chatarra y niñas pijas, se ha convertido, a golpe de un solo DVD de Sofía, en castillos, vestidos, joyas y princesas. Papá dice que igual que Diego, el rescatador de animales, ha pasado a categoría de prescindible, no pasará mucho antes de que los brillos de princesa vuelvan a ser escombros, trapos, chatarra y niñas pijas, pero de momento es el centro de mis días.

What a few months ago was rubble, rags, scrap, and posh girls, has turned, with a blow from a Sofia the First DVD, into castles, gowns, jewels and princesses. Daddy says that the same way Diego, the animal rescuer, has moved to the dispensable category, it won’t take long for the princess sparkle to revert to rumble, rags, scrap, and posh girls, but for now it is the core of my days.

Lo cierto es que ha sido una temporada musical. Empezó con Madagascar y “I like to move it”, le siguió Río “I want to party”, y luego me enganché a Lady Gaga y su “Telephone”. Al final todas han quedado eclipsadas por la Princesa Sofía.

The fact is that it has been a musical season. It started with Madagascar and “I like to move it”, followed by Rio “I wanna party”, and then I got hooked to Lady Gaga and her “Telephone”. In the end all of them have been eclipsed by Princess Sofia.



El curso en Busy Bee comenzó con cambios. Este año ya soy senior, lo que significa que tengo compañeros más mayores y recibimos clases más serias. Estoy aprendiendo muchas cosas, leemos libros pequeños, contamos hasta 100 y ya sé escribir mi nombre. También me han explicado que el mundo se divide en niños y niñas, en lugar de hermanos y hermanas. No sé muy bien por qué, pero al parecer hay un matiz que se me escapa.

The Busy Bee year started with some changes. Now I am a senior, which means that I have older classmates and we receive more serious classes. I am learning a lot of things, we read small books, we count to 100, and I know how to write my name. They have also explained to me that the world is split between boys and girls, instead of brothers and sisters. I don’t know well why, but there seems to be a nuance that escapes me.

En casa también ejerzo de senior, bueno de hermana mayor, ahora que Diego empieza a moverse más y podemos hacer cosas juntos. Nos lo pasamos muy bien jugando y casi todos los días es mi mejor amigo.

At home I act as a senior too, well as big sister, now that Diego is starting to move around and we can do more things together. We have a lot of fun playing and he is my best friend almost every day.

Este año estaba esperando Halloween con ilusión, ahora que ya sé cómo funciona. Mamá me compró un disfraz de brujita y Diego se disfrazó de rinoceronte. Nos reímos un montón viendo la pinta que tenía cada uno. Cuando papá llegó del trabajo nos fuimos a hacer truco o trato, pero enseguida me cansé. Estaba lloviendo y además no le veía la gracia a ir buscando golosinas por el barrio, cuando en casa teníamos una bolsa llena.

This year I was awaiting Halloween with excitement, now that I know how it works. Mommy had bought a little witch costume and Diego was dressed up as a rhinoceros. We laughed a lot seeing the way we looked. When daddy arrived from work we went out to trick and treat, but I got tired soon. It was raining and I did not find it funny to collect candy around the neighbourhood, when we had a full bag at home.

Durante el otoño he empezado a ir a clases de tenis. No se parece mucho a lo que sale por la televisión y ya no sé cuál de los dos tipos practica papá cuando dice que se va a jugar al tenis. Aunque me cansaba bastante y me costaba un poco, ahora que ya se han acabado las clases las echo de menos.

During the fall I have started attending tennis lessons. It does not resemble much what you can see on TV and at this point I don’t know which one of both types daddy practices when he says he goes to play tennis. Although I got tired soon and it was hard, now that the classes are over I really miss them.

La abuela Chela llegó a visitarnos a mediados de noviembre, justo cuando a tiempo para experimentar el cambio de temperatura a mitad de otoño y para ayudarnos a recoger las hojas del jardín. Como siempre, sacó muchas fotos y vídeos de nuestras aventuras juntas.

Grandma Chela arrived to visit us mid-November, just in time to experience the temperature change that takes place in the middle of the fall and to help us pick up fallen leaves. As always, she took a lot of pictures and videos of our adventures together.

También llego a tiempo para mi cumpleaños. Me recordó mucho al de Diego: en la mesa de la cocina, apagando la vela, sentados en el mismo orden, y con la abuela retratando el momento. La diferencia es que esta vez ya estaba en la etapa princesa y todo brillaba y era mágico.

She also arrived in time for my birthday. It reminded me a lot of Diego’s: at the kitchen table, blowing the candle, sitting in the same order, and with grandma taking pictures of everything. The difference is that this time I was already in the princess stage, everything sparkled and was magic.

No quiero / I don’t want it

A veces si no hablas claro acabas haciendo lo que no quieres, comiendo lo que no quieres, vistiendo lo que no quieres, o yendo adonde no quieres. Para que no queden dudas yo siempre digo lo que no quiero. Papá se enfada de vez en cuando y me dice que si no quiero algo, que le diga qué es lo que quiero, y esa pregunta suele tener truco y creo que es mejor no contestar. Aun así, creo que me conviene dejar claro si no quiero algo.

Sometimes if you are not clear you may end up doing what you don’t want to do, eating what you don’t want to eat, wearing what you don’t want to wear, or going where you don’t want to go. To ensure there is no misunderstanding I always say what I don’t want. Daddy gets angry from time to time and he says if you don’t want that, tell me what is it that you want, and that question is tricky and I prefer not to answer. In any case, I think it is appropriate to say it when I don’t want something.

Poco después de volver de México empezamos a prepararnos para el final del curso en el Busy Bee. Ensayamos canciones, fabricamos nuestros aparejos para la graduación, e hicimos un repaso del año que quedó reflejado en un libro de recuerdo.

Soon after we returned from Mexico we started to prepare the end of the year at Busy Bee. We rehearsed songs, crafted props for graduation, and reviewed the year, which ended up reflected in our yearbook.

El último día del curso celebramos la graduación y en menos de dos horas todo lo que habíamos ensayado se puso en práctica… y luego todo se acabó. Tiempo de decir adiós a mis profesoras (Ms. Kayla se hizo esta foto conmigo) y también a mis amigas, Rylee y Ava, aunque ellas volverían para el campamento de verano.

The last day we celebrated the graduation and in less than two hours everything we had rehearsed was displayed… and then everything was over. Time to say good-bye to my teachers (Ms. Kayla is in the picture with me) and also my friends, Rylee and Ava, although they would come back for the summer camp.

El verano se complicó un poco con el cambio de rutina. Mamá volvió al trabajo, Diego empezó a ir a la guardería y papá andaba más ocupado de lo habitual. Encima, Diego se despertaba cuando salía el sol, lo cual ocurre bastante pronto en verano, y le daba por despertarnos a todos. A veces me gusta que compartamos habitación, pero otras me gustaría que tuviera la suya propia.

The summer got a bit complicated with changes in the home routine. Mommy went back to work, Diego started going to daycare, and daddy was busier than usual. Besides, Diego woke up when the sun went up, which tends to happen quite early during the summer, and he woke everyone else up. Sometimes I like that we share the bedroom, but other time I would prefer that he had his own.

Un día llegó la abuela Chela al rescate, y lo celebramos todos con el cumpleaños de Diego. Me encanta el protocolo, con los platos, las velas, la tarta, la canción de cumpleaños… Ya queda poco para el mío, y para calentar motores, también celebramos los cumpleaños de papá y mamá durante el verano.

One day Grandma Chela arrived to the rescue, and we all celebrated Diego’s birthday. I love the setting, with the plates, the candles, the cake, the birthday song… Soon it will by my birthday, and to warm up we also celebrated daddy’s and mommy’s during the summer.

Antes de volver al Busy Bee tuve una semana de vacaciones y la abuela Chela se quedó conmigo en casa. Me dejaba usar su tableta, ver vídeos y escuchar canciones. Además, jugamos a grabar vídeos y sacar fotos. Yo creo que al final la abuela ya estaba un poco cansada de mi semana de vacaciones.

Before returning to Busy Bee I had a vacation week and Grandma Chela stayed with me at home. She let me use her tablet, watch videos and listen to songs. Besides, we played recording videos and taking photos. I think that in the end grandma was a bit tired of my vacation week.

Poco después llegó la tía Mónica y todos nos fuimos a pasar el fin de semana a una cabaña junto a un lago al norte de Toronto. Al principio pensé que nos íbamos a México otra vez, pero no, esta vez nos quedamos dentro de Canadá.

Soon after Auntie Monica arrived and we all went to spend a weekend to a cabin by a lake north of Toronto. In the beginning I thought that we were going back to Mexico, but no, this time we stayed in Canada.

El paisaje era muy bonito, sobre todo los atardeceres sobre el lago, y nos lo pasamos muy bien jugando a diferentes juegos, bañándonos en el lago, o paseando entre los árboles.

The landscape was beautiful, especially the sunset over the lake, and we had a great time playing different games, plunging in the lake, or strolling by the trees.

Lo único malo es que sólo fue un fin de semana, la abuela Chela y la tía Mónica se volvieron a Perú, empezó el campamento de verano y Diego siguió despertándose pronto.

The only con is that it was just one weekend, and then Grandma Chela and Auntie Monica returned to Peru, the summer camp started, and Diego kept waking up early.

Un día mamá me dijo que nos íbamos al dentista. A mí me pareció una buena idea, aunque no sabía muy bien qué significaba. Cuando llegamos a la consulta y vi todos los aparatos ya no parecía tan buena idea. La verdad es que la situación intimida. Al final no pasó nada, mis dientes estaban sanos y todo quedó en unos cuantos consejos, aunque me quedé con el susto en el cuerpo.

One day mommy told me that we were going to the dentist. I thought it was a good idea, though I did not know very well what it meant. When we arrived to the dentist office and I saw all the devices it did not seem as a good idea anymore. The fact is that it is an intimidating situation. In the end everything went well, my teeth were sound, and everything ended with a few pieces of advice, though I went back home with a good scare.

Durante el verano he empezado a dibujar mejor. Antes no lo sabía, pero la verdad es que no hacía más que rayajos. Ahora ya sé dibujar formas y lo que más me gusta es dibujar a mi familia. Por ejemplo, este es uno de mis primeros dibujos de Diego. Papá dice que capta bien el espíritu de bacilo de Diego, especialmente cuando mueve los brazos para pedir comida.

During the summer I have improved my drawing. Before I did not know it, but the truth is that I just scrawled. Now I know how to draw shapes and what I like the most is to draw my family. For example, this is one the first pictures I made of Diego. Daddy says that it captures well Diego’s bacillus spirit, especially when he moves his arms asking for food.

Adiós papo / Bye-bye papo

Fue difícil volver del calor del verano de Perú al frío del invierno en Canadá, cambiar el bañador por las botas de nieve, y las vacaciones por la guardería. Pero hay que buscar el lado positivo y lo cierto es que cuando nieva el paisaje es muy bonito y cuando voy al Busy Bee aprendo muchas cosas.

It was tough to come back from the Peruvian summer heat to the Canadian winter cold, to change the bathing suit for snow boots, and being on holidays for daycare. But you have look at the positive side of things and the truth is that it’s beautiful when it snows and I learn a lot when I go to Busy Bee.

Además tenía un asunto pendiente de resolver que requería estabilidad y concentración y que no había querido afrontar antes. Busqué el día adecuado y le dije a mamá que ya no me hacía falta el pañal. Dicho y hecho. Mamá no se fiaba y por las noches me ponía uno por si acaso, pero en unas semanas se dio cuenta de que realmente no servía para nada. Y es que sólo era cuestión de proponérselo. ¡Adiós papo!

Besides I had a pending issue to sort out that required stability and concentration and that I had been procrastinating on. I looked for the appropriate day and I told mommy that I did not need a diaper anymore. Said and done. Mommy was not very confident on my abilities and at nights she put me one on just in case, but a few weeks later she realized it actually did nothing. In the end it was just a matter of making up my mind. Bye-bye papo!

Un lunes de febrero en lugar de ir a la guardería, nos fuimos todos a un sitio donde había mucha gente con banderitas de Canadá. A nosotros también nos dieron dos y nos sentamos a escuchar a un señor con bigote que hablaba de muchas cosas bonitas que pasan en este país. Luego cantamos Oh Canadá! que yo me lo sabía del Busy Bee y papá y mamá de los partidos de los Raptors. Estaban contentos y decían que era un día importante y que algún día miraría esta foto y sabría por qué.

A Monday in February instead of going to daycare, we all drove to a place full of people with little Canadian flags. They gave us two as well and we sat down to listen to a man with a moustache who said beautiful things about this country. Then we sang Oh Canada!, which I knew from Busy Bee and daddy and mommy from the Raptors’ games. They were happy and said that it was an important day and that someday I would look at this picture and understand why.

Pero lo que ha sido importante para mí este invierno ha sido descubrir mi personaje de ficción favorito, quien casualmente se llama Diego. Todo empezó con un DVD que compró mamá llamado Diego’s Safari Rescue, y ahora ya tengo diez más, sé un montón de cosas sobre pingüinos, delfines, llamas, mariposas, nutrias y otros animales, y esta canción se ha convertido en mi banda sonora personal.

But the most important thing for me this winter has been to come across my favourite fiction character, who casually is called Diego. Everything started with a DVD that mommy bought called Diego’s Safari Rescue, and now I have ten more, I know a lot of things about penguins, dolphins, llamas, butterflies, otters, and other animals, and this song has become my personal sound track.

Los DVDs están repartidos entre la televisión, el PC y el coche de mamá, para así poder verlos en diferentes momentos. Todas las noches veo uno o dos capítulos antes de ir a dormir y cuando hacemos trayectos largos en el coche me veo otros cuantos. También me encargo de rotarlos, para que no sean siempre los mismos.

The DVDs are now distributed between the TV set, the PC, and mommy’s van, so that I can watch them at different times. Every night I watch one or two episodes before I go to sleep and when we make long trips in the van I consume some more. I also rotate them so that I don’t watch the same ones all the time.

El mayor atracón me lo di cuando nos fuimos a Rochester en Semana Santa. Fue la primera vez que cruzamos la frontera con Estados Unidos sin bajarnos del coche, gracias al señor con bigote, y como la mayor parte del viaje íbamos de un sitio para otro, yo aproveché para sacar partido al DVD.

The biggest binge took place when we went to Rochester on Easter Weekend. It was the first time that we crossed the US border without leaving the car, thanks to the man with the moustache, and given that we spent most of the trip on the road, I got the most out of the DVD player.

La semana siguiente vino a visitarnos el Abuelo Javier y según entró por la puerta dijo que le llamara Papo ¡¿Papo!? ¿Hola Papo Javier? Era la primera vez que venía a Canadá así que nos hicimos un tour por la ciudad y también fuimos a las cataratas del Niágara. Me regaló unos libros, pero en lugar de leérmelos prefería cantar. Al final se dio cuenta de que si quería que me durmiera tenía que dejar de cantar y leerme un cuento.

The following week grandpa Javier came to visit us and as soon as he stepped in he asked me to call him Papo. Papo!? Hi Papo Javier? It was the first time he came to Canada and we went on a tour to show him the city and also to the Niagara Falls. He brought me some books, but instead of reading them to me he preferred to sing. In the end he realized that if he wanted me to sleep he had to stop singing and read me a story.

Hace unas semanas nos fuimos de vacaciones a la playa en México. Ya habíamos estado el año pasado, pero esta vez fue más divertido. La playa y la piscina eran grandes, había muchas atracciones, y cada día podíamos ir a diferentes sitios y comer cosas distintas sin salir del hotel.

A few weeks ago we went on vacation to the beach in Mexico. We had been there last year, but this time it was more fun. The beach and the swimming pool were quite large, there were many attractions, and every day we could go to different places and eat different things without leaving the hotel.

También había animales que vivían en el hotel. Yo conocía muchos de los capítulos de Diego, como los flamencos o las iguanas, que llamaban cuando estaban en problemas para que Diego fuera al rescate, y otros que no había visto nunca, como osos hormigueros o basiliscos (a los primeros les pudimos sacar una foto, pero a los segundos no, porque corrían muy rápido).

There were also animals living in the hotel. I knew many of them from the Diego episodes, like flamingos or iguanas, who called Diego when they were in trouble for him to go the rescue, and others that I had never seen, like ant eaters or basilisks (we could take a picture of the first ones, but not to the second ones, because they ran very fast).

Spanglish / Spanglish

Este año la Navidad ha sido especial. Por primera vez la hemos pasado en manga corta y aunque todo apuntaba a que seríamos más (por Diego, quiero decir), la verdad es que fuimos muchos más.

This year we had a special Christmas. For the first time we spent this time in short sleeves and even though I thought we would be more people (because of Diego I mean), the truth is that we were many more.

Nos fuimos a Perú, no solo a pasar la Navidad, sino un par de semanas más, y es que no se puede ir tan lejos sólo para unos días. Fuimos en avión, y no lo digo porque haya otra manera práctica de ir, sino porque esta vez era distinto, ya que viajaba con mis cosas y consciente de los protocolos de vuelo.

We went to Peru, not only to spend Christmas, but a couple more weeks, as you cannot go that far only for a few days. We travelled by plane, and I don’t say that because there is any other practical way of doing it, but because this time it was different, as I travelled with my belongings and conscious of the in-flight protocols.

Llevé mi maleta con mis juguetes y mi silla para coche, que sirve para ir cómoda durante el vuelo. Tenía una pantalla para mí sola así que podía ver los dibujos animados que yo quería. Me dio un poco de miedo el despegue y el aterrizaje, y como estaba entre papá y mamá, les di la mano a los dos y eso me tranquilizó. También vi las ciudades, el mar, y las montañas desde el aire, y ahora entiendo mejor porqué dibujan los mapas como los dibujan.

I had my carry-on luggage full of toys and my car seat, which is very useful to sit comfortably in the plane. I had a screen for myself where I could watch whatever cartoons I chose. Taking off and landing was a bit scary, but because I was sitting between daddy and mommy, I took their hands and that made me feel better. I also saw the cities, the sea, and the mountains from the air, and now I understand better why they draw the maps the way they do.

Lo primero que hicimos fue visitar a mi prima Fátima, que es de mi edad y cumplía años justo cuando llegábamos. Fue un cumpleaños Hello Kitty como el mío, pero a lo bestia. Había un montón de niños y me lo pasé muy bien jugando y comiendo lo que quería.

The first thing we did was to visit my cousin Fatima, who is my age and was celebrating her birthday when we arrived. It was a Hello Kitty birthday, like mine, but crazy Hello Kitty. There were many children and I had a lot of fun playing with them and eating what I wanted.

Al principio no me entendían muy bien. Yo sí entendía a todo el mundo, pero ellos me miraban con cara rara o se reían cuando decía algo. Me da a mí que en Perú no hablan muy bien el inglés, así que empecé a utilizar las palabras que usaban ellos, que por lo que parece funcionan mejor allí.

In the beginning they did not understand very well. I could understand everyone, but they looked at me with a weird face or they laughed when I said something. I have the impression that they don’t speak English very well in Peru, so I started to say the same words they used, which seems to work better there.

Luego nos fuimos unos días a la playa. Echaba de menos la playa, o al menos la piscina. Hacía mucho viento, pero me lo pasé muy bien jugando en la arena, y nadando en la piscina con mamá y papá. Diego no se metió, pero es que andaba un poco resfriado y no era plan ponerse peor.

Then we went to spend a few days on the beach. I missed the beach, or at least the swimming pool. It was windy, but I had a lot of fun playing with the sand and swimming in the pool with mommy and daddy. Diego did not get into the pool, because he was fighting a cold and it was better not to risk getting worse.

Además nos hicimos una excursión por la Reserva Nacional de Paracas. El tío Javier nos había dejado su coche y como era un 4x4 en condiciones, pudimos meternos por el desierto y llegar hasta sitios tan bonitos como los que puedes ver en estas fotos.

Besides we made a trip to the Paracas National Reserve. Uncle Javier had lent us his car and because it was an all wheel drive, we could drive through the desert and get to places as beautiful as the ones you can see in these pictures.

Antes de volver a Lima nos fuimos a buscar un orfanato en Chincha, que es una ciudad en el sur donde hace unos años hubo un terremoto. Teníamos ropa de niño que ya no nos vale a Diego y a mí y chocolates. Resultó que era un sitio sólo para niñas, pero seguro que a las más pequeñas no les importa ponerse las cosas de Diego, y estaban fuera esa mañana, porque estaban fumigando la escuela. Aunque no pudimos verlas, dejamos todos nuestros regalos y les deseamos una feliz Navidad.

Before we went back to Lima we looked for an orphanage in Chincha, which is a city in the South hit by an earthquake a few years ago. We had baby and child clothing that neither Diego nor I use anymore, and also chocolates. It happened that it was an orphanage for girls, but I’m sure the youngest ones won’t have a problem wearing Diego’s clothes, and they were away that morning, because they were fumigating the school. Even though we could not see them, we left all our presents and with them a Merry Christmas.

Luego empezó la Navidad en serio. Nos juntamos con la tía Mónica y el tío Javier y viajamos todos a la casa de la abuela Chela y Óscar, donde había un árbol enorme y un montón de regalos. Y más que llegaron luego cuando aparecieron los tíos y los primos para la cena. Fue un fiestón, e incluso me dejaron quedarme hasta después de medianoche.

Then we seriously started celebrating Christmas. We got together with Aunty Monica and Uncle Javier and we travelled to Grandma Chela’s and Oscar’s house, where there was a huge Christmas tree with a lot of presents. And more presents arrived when uncles, aunts and cousins showed up for dinner. It was quite a party, and I could even stay up past midnight.

Pasamos un par de semanas en Trujillo y como la abuela Chela y Óscar me dejaban hacer lo que quería, lo cierto es que no me importaría haberme quedado más tiempo. Me gustaba sobre todo meterme en su despacho, donde me dejaban organizar las cosas a mi aire, y además papá y mamá normalmente no me buscaban allí.

We spent a couple of weeks in Trujillo and given that Grandma Chela and Oscar let me do what I wanted, the truth is that I would have not mattered staying longer. I especially liked getting in their office, where they let me organize things my way, and besides daddy and mommy usually did not look for me there.

Íbamos a la piscina o a la playa casi todos los días, y si no de paseo a los centros comerciales, que hasta de eso hay ya en Trujillo. Las puestas de sol eran muy bonitas y los amigos y primos y tíos iban y venían para hacer los días aún más entretenidos.

We went to the pool or the beach almost every day, and if we did not, we went to the malls, which now even exist in Trujillo. The sunsets were wonderful and friends and cousins came and went to make the days even more entertaining.

También hicimos un viaje a la montaña, donde sorprendentemente todo era verde y llovía casi todos los días. Nos alojamos en un hotel que era una granja que tenía vacas, caballos, ovejas y llamas. Las llamas no hacían nada, pero me daba miedo acercarme porque me miraban fijamente como si me fueran a escupir.

We also made a trip to the mountain, where surprisingly everything was green and it rained almost every day. We stayed in a hotel that was a farm, which cows, horses, sheep and llamas. The llamas did not do anything, but they scared me because they stared at me as though they were about to spit.

Un día fuimos a un zoo rural, donde había animales que no había visto antes. Y es que en este viaje he podido conocer en vivo animales que sólo había visto en libros. Por ejemplo, había leído que las medusas tienen tentáculos, pero hasta que no las vi en la playa no sabía muy bien a qué se referían. O los pelícanos, que tienen el pico muy largo: pues lo tienen tan largo que tiene que echar el cuello para atrás para no pincharse con él.

One day we went to a rural zoo, where I could see animals that I had never seen before. The fact is that in this trip I have seen live animals that I had only seen in the books. For example, I had read that the jelly fish has tentacles, but until I did not see them on the beach I did not understand well what that meant. Or the pelicans, who have a long peak: well it’s so long that they have to bend their neck backwards so that they don’t stab themselves with it.

La abuela Chela viajó con nosotros a Lima para pasar los últimos días allí, y yo lo celebré, porque entre ella y la tía Mari, siempre me tocaba una buena ración de dulces, helados, paseos, e incluso me enseñaron a ir de compras.

Grandma Chela travelled with us to Lima to spend the last few days there, and I enjoyed it, because between her and Aunty Mari, I had my fair share of sweets, ice creams, walks, and even they taught me how to go shopping.

Antes de volver a Canadá, aún nos dio tiempo a organizar unas cuantas reuniones familiares e ir a la playa. La tía Berta nos invitó a pasar un día con su familia en una playa muy bonita al sur de Lima y allí pude pasar más rato con mis primas y jugar con sus juguetes.

Before we returned to Canada, we still had time to organize a few family meetings and to go to the beach. Aunty Berta invited us to spend a day with her family on a beautiful beach south of Lima, and there I could spend more time with my cousins and play with their toys.

Y cuando yo estaba ya adaptada y dominando las conversaciones en mi nuevo idioma preferido, nos metimos en el avión, nos dimos las manos, me asusté un poco, y llegamos a Canadá, donde yo entendía todo, pero a mí no me entendían muy bien. Ahora tendré que averiguar la versión inglesa de las palabras que he aprendido en Perú.

And when I had completely adjusted and I controlled the conversations in my new favourite language, we entered a plane, we held hands, I got scared, and we arrived to Canada, where I could understand everything, but people did not understand me very well. Now I will have to find out the English version of the words that I have learned in Peru.
