El mundo está volviendo a la normalidad, al menos en lo que al
coronavirus se refiere, porque por otro lado todo anda revuelto: de nuevo hay
guerra en Europa, el cambio climático hace cada vez más estragos, y comprar
ahora es más caro y no siempre puedes encontrar lo que buscas. Lo bueno es que
ahora podemos hacer más cosas que durante la pandemia, aunque parece claro que
no volverá a ser como antes.
The world is returning
to being normal, at least as far as the coronavirus in concerned, because may
other things are still upside down: there is a war in Europe, climate change is
causing havoc, and buying is now more expensive, if you can find what you are
looking for. The good thing is that now we can do more things than we could during
the pandemic, though it seems that it won’t be exactly as it was before.
El verano pasado aún estábamos en medio del lío. Tuvimos que esperar a
que papá estuviera vacunado para poder viajar a España, pero por suerte pudimos
hacerlo a mediados de julio. Fuimos directos a Navalacruz, donde coincidimos
unos días con los primos.
Last summer we still
were in the middle of it. We had to wait for dad to be vaccinated to travel to
Spain, but fortunately we got the green light to do it mid-July. We went
straight to Navalacruz, where we happen to meet the cousins for a few days.
Se fueron enseguida y papá también volvió a Canadá para trabajar, mientras Diego y yo nos quedamos con los abuelos. En el pueblo no había campamento, por el COVID, así que tuvimos que montarnos nuestra propia diversión. No sin obstáculos de todos modos.
The left soon and
dad also returned to Canada to work, while Diego and I stayed with Grandma
Nieves and Grandpa Pablo. There was no summer camp because of COVID, so we had
to organize our own entertainment. It wasn’t always easy.
Alguien se quejó al Ayuntamiento y prohibieron jugar con balones en la
plaza, lo cual no tiene sentido, ya que las escuelas están cerradas. Tuvimos
que montar una manifestación y al final el alcalde nos recibió y llegamos a un
acuerdo para que ciertos juegos fueran permitidos en la plaza y abrieron las
escuelas para que pudiéramos jugar allí con el balón.
Someone complained
to the Town, and they forbid to play with balls at the main square, which doesn’t
make any sense, considering that the school playground is closed. We had to stand
demonstration up and, in the end, the major listed to us and we agreed on
certain games being allowed and the schoolyard being open to play football
there.
Mientras tanto, como hacía calor, se me ocurrió que podíamos montar un
puesto de limonada. La abuela y las madres de otras niñas nos ayudaban con la
producción, pero nosotras nos encargábamos de las ventas. Fue un éxito. El
primer día vendimos todo y usamos la mitad de los ingresos para comprar más
limones, y seguimos así durante una semana. Otros niños tuvieron envidia y
montaron un puesto para competir con nosotros en otra parte del pueblo. El
abuelo nos dijo que los bares se estaban enfadando y al final tuvimos que
dejarlo. En total sacamos 44 euros, que empleamos en comprarnos una comida en
el restaurante del pueblo antes de repartir el resto.
Meanwhile, because
it was so hot, I thought that we could set a lemonade stand. Grandma Nieves and
other girls’ moms helped with the production, but we took care of sales. It was
a success. The first day we were sold out and we used half of our revenue to
buy more lemons, and we carried on with the venture for a week. Other kids saw
us and decided to set up their own stand to compete in a different part of the
town. Grandpa Pablo told us that the bars were getting angry at us, and we had
to stop it. We made 44 euros, which we used to have lunch in the town’s
restaurant before splitting it.
El fuego volvió otra vez este verano y esta vez mucho más cerca. Durante más de 5 días las montañas alrededor del pueblo se quemaron. Otros pueblos fueron desalojados y nosotros estuvimos cerca, aunque al final, el viento cambió dirección y nos pudimos quedar.
The fire came back this
summer again and this time much closer. For more than 5 days the mountains surrounding
the town burned. Other towns had to be evacuated and we were close, though in
the end, the wind changed direction and we could stay.
Como siempre, el tiempo pasó volando, papá y mamá volvieron a recogernos y llegó la hora de despedirnos de los abuelos hasta el verano siguiente.
Like always, time flew
by, mom and dad came back to pick us up and it was time to say good-bye to the
grandparents until next summer.
Nada más volver nos enteramos de que ya podía ponerme la vacuna para el COVID, así que allá fui antes de empezar el colegio. La verdad es que no noté nada.
Right at our return,
we found out that I was eligible to have the COVID vaccine, and there I went
before school started. The truth is that I didn’t notice anything.
Y después el colegio. Por suerte esta vez empezaba normal, o medio normal. Normal porque cogíamos el autobús e íbamos a clase. No tan normal porque aún había un montón de normas sobre dónde estar, y con quién ir, y siempre con la mascarilla.
And then, the
school. Fortunately, this time it felt normal, or half-normal. Normal because
we could take the bus and be in the classroom. Not so normal, because we still
have a lot of rules about where to be, who to be with, and always with a facemask
on.
Este año era el séptimo curso de primaria y me tocó en una clase mixta de
séptimo y octavo. Al principio intimidaba un poco, y más cuando empezaron a
hablar de las pruebas de acceso a secundaria, pero me acostumbré y lo acabé
pasando bien.
This year I was in
seventh grade, and I was in a mixed class with seven and eight graders. In the
beginning it was a bit intimidating, more so when they started to talk about tests
for secondary school, but I got used to it and I ended up having a good time.
Estar con niños más grandes te obliga a mantener las formas, así que tuve
que hacer un esfuerzo por renovar el armario. Mamá no está de acuerdo con mi
gusto y dice que visto ropones, pero yo decido mi estilo.
Being with older
kids forces you to be presentable, so I made an effort to upgrade my closet.
Mom doesn’t like what I choose, and she says that I wear large clothes, but it’s
me who decides what my style is.
Aún las actividades extraescolares estaban un poco restringidas, pero al menos las clases de actuación eran otra vez en persona y mamá nos apuntó a clases de arte hasta que volvieran las actividades deportivas.
Extracurricular
activities were still restricted, but at least I could carry one with in person
acting classes and mom signed us up for art classes until sports were allowed
again.
La abuela Chela y la tía Maritza vinieron a visitarnos a primeros de
octubre. Era la primera vez que la tía venía a Canada y la abuela se lo pasó en
grade enseñándole los alrededores.

Maritza came to visit us early in October. It was the firs time in Canada for our
aunt, and grandma took the lead in showing hear around.
Este año pudimos celebrar las fiestas de otoño con cierta normalidad. En Halloween
me disfracé de detective, y pudimos salir a hacer truco o trato.
This year we could celebrate
the fall festivities with a certain level of normalcy. For Halloween I dressed
up as a detective, and we could go trick-or-treating.
Y mi cumpleaños lo celebramos en casa con todas mis amigas del colegio, más Luca y Claudia. No es como los cumpleaños de antes, pero lo pasamos bien todas juntas.
And I celebrated my
birthday at home with all my Friends from school, plus Luca and Claudia. It is
not like the good old birthdays, but we had a good time all together.
A finales de año el coronavirus volvió con más fuerza. Ahora se llamaba Ómicron, que al parecer no era tan grave como los anteriores, pero se contagiaba más rápido. Había tanta gente con el virus, que pensamos que se estaba mejor en la playa, que encerrados en casa en Canadá.
At the end of the
year, the coronavirus returned with virulence. Now it was called Omicron, which
apparently is not as serious as the previous versions, but it was more
contagious. There was so many people sick that we thought that we would be
better on the beach than locked down at home in Canada.
Nos fuimos a la Republica Dominicana y pasamos una semana en un hotel con
todo incluido. Mamá dice que ya habíamos estado antes en hoteles así, pero yo
no me acordaba, y me pareció que estaba muy bien y que deberíamos hacer esto
más a menudo.
We went to the Dominican
Republic, and we spent a week in an all-inclusive hotel. Mom says that we had
been in hotels like that before, but I didn’t remember it, and I thought it was
a great idea and that we should do this more often.
Casualmente, la tía Mónica y el tío Joel estaban de vacaciones allí esos días, aunque en un hotel diferente. Para poder vernos, buscamos un punto intermedio y quedamos en un restaurante para comer, y para ver cómo Vicente estaba creciendo.
Casually, Aunt
Monica and Uncle Joel were there on vacations at the same time, though in a
different hotel. We found a middle point and met at a restaurant for lunch, to
check how much Vicente was growing.
La semana se pasó rápido, me vino por primera vez lo que me tiene que venir, y entonces volvimos al shock del frío y a pasar la Navidad en casa.
The week went by quickly, what had to come came for the first time, and then we returned to the shocking cold and to spend Christmas at home.
Como regalo de Navidad le pedí a papá y mamá un iPhone. Me miraron con
cara rara y me dijeron que para que para qué quería un teléfono móvil si no se
podía ir a ningún sitio que no fuera el colegio o la casa. Yo les hice una
presentación para explicar por qué, pero todavía me dijeron que muy bien, muy
bonito, pero que no, que no es momento.
As a Christmas
present, I asked mom and dad for an iPhone. They looked at me funny and they
said that what I wanted a cellphone for if we could not go anywhere other than
school and home. I put together a presentation to explain why, but still they
said vey good, very nice, but not the right time.
A los dos días papá aparece con un contrato (¡un contrato!) con un montón
de condiciones que, si las cumplo, darán luz verde a que tenga un móvil después
del verano. Lo leí y me pareció inaceptable. Que tenía que sacar buenas notas,
que tenía que leer más libros, que tenía que portarme bien con Diego, que tenía
que hacer mi cama y cuidar mi ropa y mis cosas. Le dije que eso no era justo y
que me estaban manipulando.
Two days later dad shows
up with a contract (a contract!) with a lot of conditions that, should I meet them,
would result in them buying a cellphone after the summer. I read it and I thought
it was unacceptable. I had to get good grades, I had to read more books, I had
to be kind to Diego, I had to do my bed and take care of my clothes and other
belongings. I said that that was not fair and that it was manipulating.
No me regalaron un iPhone por Navidad.
I didn’t get an iPhone
for Christmas.
Así que me lo pensé mejor y al final decidí firmar el contrato, ya que parecía la mejor opción para tener un móvil algún día.
So I thought about it
better and eventually I decided to sign the contract, as it looked as the best
option to get a cellphone someday.
El invierno fue como siempre … invierno. A consecuencia de Ómicron tuvimos
unas cuantas semanas de clases online, pero a finales de enero ya estábamos de
vuelta en el colegio. No hubo días de mucho frío como otros años, pero nevó
mucho. Hubo un día que nevó tanto que papá no pudo quitar toda la nieve de una
sola vez. Yo hice lo que pude y le eché una mano, pero había tanta que al final
me rendí.
The winter was as always
… winter. Due to Omicron, we had a few weeks of online learning, though at the
end of January we were back in the classroom. It wasn’t as cold as other
winters, but we had lots of snow. There was a day when it snowed so much that
dad could not clear all the snow in one shot. I tried to help but, in the end,
I gave up as well.
Las notas de la primera evaluación llegaron en febrero. No estaban mal, pero se podían mejorar. Además, no daban el mínimo que papá había puesto en contrato, pero las demás condiciones las estaba cumpliendo bien. Sólo una vez me amenazó con quitarme uno de los diez puntos que tenía hasta el final del curso.
The first semester grades
arrived in February. They were not bad, but they could be better. Besides, they
didn’t hit the threshold that dad had established in the contract, although I
was doing well with the other conditions. Only once he threatened to take away
one of the ten points I had until the end of the schoolyear.
En marzo estábamos tan cansados de la nieve que, cuando llegaron las vacaciones
de primavera, nos fuimos por sorpresa a Los Ángeles.
In March, we were so
tired of the snow that, when spring break arrived, we went on a surprise trip
to Los Angeles.
Los Ángeles era el destino principal, pero al final nos hicimos un viaje por el sur de California, y conocimos sitios muy diferentes.

got to see different places.

Y muchas cosas más. En el viaje no había iPads ni ordenadores, así que teníamos que improvisar el entretenimiento. Hicimos un montón de juegos en el coche, y por las noches en el hotel echábamos partidas de cartas entre los cuatro.

places. In the trip there were neither iPads nor computers, so we had to
improvise the entertainment. We played car games and at night the four of us played
cards in the hotel.
Durante la primavera le pedí a mamá que me enseñara a hacer punto. No sé
por qué, pero me ayudaba a bajar las revoluciones por las noches antes de ir a
dormir. Mi primer proyecto fue una bufanda para Gris. Yo creo que le gustó.
During the spring, I
asked mom to teach me how to knit. I don’t know why, but it helped me slow down
at night before going to sleep. My first project was a scarf for Gris. I think
he liked it.
Después de Ómicron, las cosas se calmaron con el COVID, no tanto porque la gente no lo cogiera, sino porque parece que había menos que se ponían graves y tenían que ir al hospital, y empezaron a eliminar restricciones.
After Omicron,
things calmed down with COVID, not because people didn’t get sick, but because
apparently, they didn’t become as ill and didn’t have to go to the hospital, so
restrictions started to go away.
Una de las consecuencias en el colegio es que permitieron deportes de
contacto por primera vez en dos años. Un día pusieron un cartel de que iban a
hacer una selección para el equipo de baloncesto de séptimo y octavo combinado.
Yo no tenía ganas, pero mis amigas querían ir, ya sabes por hacer la gracia.
One of the consequences
at school was that they allowed contact sports for the first time in two years. One day, they put up a sign announcing a
tryout for the seventh and eighth grade basketball team. I didn’t feel like
going, but my friends wanted to go fool around.
La gracia fue que me
seleccionaron. Por lo que parece, las horas que pasamos jugando al baloncesto en familia
se notaron y lo hacía mejor de lo que pensaba. Al principio no me apetecía,
porque casi todas las niñas eran mayores, pero luego me di cuenta de que todo
el mundo lo comentaba y pensé que no era un mal motivo para ser popular. Sólo
jugamos un partido, y fue un poco desastre, pero estoy esperando al año que
viene para jugar más. Y además ¡el profesor me subió la nota en educación
física!
And fooling around,
I was selected. It looks as though all that time we spent playing basketball as
a family paid off and I played better than I thought. In the beginning I didn’t
want to be part of it, because most of the girls where older than me, but then I
realized that everyone talked about it, and I thought that it was not a bad
reason to be popular. We only played a match, and it was a bit of a disaster,
but I’m looking forward to next year to play more. And besides, the teacher gave
a better grade in physical education!
A mamá le gustó lo de viajar, y aprovechamos las facilidades de que papá
trabaje en Air Canada y un día festivo a primeros de junio para irnos a París.
Mom liked the idea of
traveling, and we took advantage of dad’s travel privileges at Air Canada and a
PA day early in June to go to Paris.
Esta vez fue un viaje urbano. Íbamos en metro a un sitio por la mañana y caminábamos un montón para ver edificios famosos, o parques o barrios enteros. Estos son algunos sitios famosos de París, además de la Torre Eiffel.
This time it was an
urban trip. We picked a spot to go to by subway in the morning and we walked a
lot to see famous buildings, parks or entire neighbourhoods. These are some of

Diego y yo lo pasamos muy bien, no sólo disfrutando de las vistas y la
comida, sino también de ver cómo papá se desenvolvía con los camareros y en las
taquillas del metro. Se apañaba, pero tiene que mejorar el oído en francés, porque
no siempre entendía lo que le decían.
Diego and I had a
great time, not only enjoying the views and the food, but also seeing how dad
struggled to order or buy train tickets. He got by, but he needs to improve his
listening in French, because he not always understood what they were saying to him.
También le encontramos el gusto a hacer el indio por la calle y la
habitación del hotel. Y es que había que poner un poco de chispa a tanta
cultura que estábamos adquiriendo.
We also had fun joking around on the streets and at the hotel room. It is because we had to add some fun
to all the culture we were soaking in.
En Francia parece que el COVID no había pasado nunca. Nadie llevaba mascarilla, ni siquiera en el metro, y los sitios estaban abarrotados. Nosotros aún éramos precavidos porque teníamos que viajar y no era cuestión de ponerse enfermos. Pero un día fuimos al museo del Louvre, y al ver a la Mona Lisa se me cayó la mascarilla y me da que ahí nos cogió el bicho.
In France it looked
as though COVID had not even existed. Nobody wore a mask, not even in the
subway, and everywhere it was jampacked. We were careful because we had to travel,
and we didn’t want to fall sick. But one day we went to the Louvre Museum and
when I saw the Mona Lisa my mask fell and I think that’s where the bug caught us.
A mí no me afectó mucho. Sólo un poco de congestión y una mala noche. Ni siquiera sabía que era COVID. Diego vino después, cuando ya estábamos en Canadá, y la tos le delató. Dio positivo y tuvo que quedarse en casa una semana. Luego mamá se encontró mal, pero fueron un par de días de cansancio y malestar. Pero papá se llevó el premio, una semana después del incidente de la Mona Lisa. Él sí que lo pasó mal, no podía respirar bien, ni comer. La verdad es que se quedó más delgado de lo que ya estaba y la tos le duró un par de semanas. Por suerte, se quedó sólo en susto.
I barely got sick. Just
some nasal congestion and a bad night. I didn’t even know it was COVID. Diego
came next, when were in Canada and the cough gave him away. He tested positive
and he had to stay at home for a week. Then mom felt unwell, but it was just a
couple of days tired and with body aches. But dad got the big prize, a week
after the Mona Lisa incident. He had a tough time and for a couple of days he
couldn’t breathe well, and he couldn’t eat or drink. He lost a lot of weight,
and the cough lasted a couple of weeks. Fortunately, it was just a scare.
Una vez todos estábamos recuperados, celebramos el cumpleaños de Diego en
dos partes: primero en familia, y luego con los amigos. Para él el cumpleaños
se como una fiesta de fin de curso.
Once we all had recovered,
we celebrated Diego’s birthday in two chapters: first as a family and then with
the friends. For Diego, his birthday party is like a school-end party.
Y hablando de colegio, el segundo semestre me fue bastante bien. Saqué buenas notas en matemáticas con regularidad y tuve varios éxitos en lengua y estudios sociales. Me centré en hacer bien los trabajos y prepararme para los debates, y al final conseguí mejorar mis notas en general.
And speaking of school,
the second semester was good. I got good grades in math regularly and I had a
couple of successful moments in language and social studies. I focused on doing
my assignments well and preparing the debates, and in the end my grades improved
in general.
Sin darme cuenta, el resto de las condiciones del contrato las cumplí con
facilidad. Leí más libros, hice más deporte, cuidé mis cosas, ayudé con la cama
y mi ropa, y hasta me porté un poco mejor con Diego. Ahora me voy a ir de
vacaciones a España con los abuelos, pero cuando vuelva, espero por fin tener
mi móvil.
Without even
realizing, I met the rest of the conditions in the contract easily. I read more
books, was active in sports, took care of my belongings, I helped with my bed
and my clothes, and even I was a better sister to Diego. Now I’m going to go on
vacation to Spain with the grandparents, but when I am back I expect to have my
cellphone.
Por cierto, ahora Diego dice que quiere un contrato para que le regalen una
Nintendo Switch en Navidad. Ya veremos en qué acaba esa historia.
By the way, now Diego
says that he wants to sign a contract to get a Nintendo Switch for Christmas.
We’ll see how that story ends.
