Ya llevamos más de un año a vuelta con el coronavirus. Al principio pensamos que sería cosa de un par de meses y que se pasaría, pero parece que va para largo. Lo que no significa que no nos estemos acostumbrando a vivir con él. Lo que a su vez no significa que sea divertido.

It’s over a year now back and forth with the coronavirus. In the beginning we thought it would be a matter of months and that it would go away, but it seems that it’s going to take time. That doesn’t mean that we are not getting used to live with it, which in turn doesn’t mean that it is fun.

El verano pasado al final sorteamos todos los obstáculos y pudimos irnos de vacaciones a Mallorca como habíamos planeado. No era fácil viajar. Pese a la ventaja de tener a papá en Air Canada, tuvimos que hacer escala tanto al ir como al volver y siempre con mucho cuidado.

Last summer we were able to work around all hurdles and we could go on vacation to Mallorca as we had planned. It was not easy to travel. Despite the advantage of daddy working at Air Canada, we had to make layovers and be extremely cautious.

Alquilamos una casa en Alcudia y nos juntamos allí con los abuelos. Teníamos piscina y todo lo que nos hacía falta para poder mantener las distancias. Sólo salíamos para ir a la playa o excursiones con el coche en familia.

We rented a house in Alcudia and we met there with Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves. We had a swimming pool and everything we need to keep distance with other people. We only went out to go to the beach or road trips as a family.

Los abuelos nos dieron un par de sustos. Primero fue el abuelo Pablo, que se le ocurrió seguir a papá por las rocas un día que íbamos a la playa. Se resbaló y cayó de espaldas y acabó magullado de arriba abajo. Por suerte sólo fueron heridas superficiales y, entre el Polysporin y el agua del mar, se curó pronto.

We had a couple of scares though. First it was Grandpa Pablo, who decided to follow daddy walking on the rocks one day on our way to the beach. He slipped and fell backwards, and he ended up with wounds all over. Fortunately, it was all superficial and, between the Polysporin and the sea water, he healed fast.

El segundo nos ocurrió unos días más tarde. Papá y mamá alquilaron un barco para navegar por la costa de la isla. El abuelo no quiso venir porque aún estaba recuperándose. Salimos del puerto y después de una hora con un poco de oleaje, llegamos cerca de una playa a la que sólo se podía llegar desde el mar. Todos (menos papá que se quedó cuidando el barco) nos tiramos al agua para ir a la playa, pero la abuela Nieves se quedó a medio camino. Papá le llevo un chaleco salvavidas, pero aun así no avanzaba y se estaba cansando. Al final entre papá, mamá y unos señores que estaban en otro barco pudieron ayudarla, pero con el susto, el paseo ya no pareció tan bonito.

The second took place a few days later. Daddy and mommy decided to rent a boat to sail around the island coast. Grandpa Pablo didn’t want to come because he was still recovering. We left the port and after an hour or so with a wavy sea, we got close to a beach that could only be reached swimming. We all (except for daddy who stayed behind taking care of the boat) jumped to swim to the beach, but Grandma Nieves got stuck halfway through. Daddy brought her a life vest so that she could float better, but she didn’t make much progress and she was getting tired. In the end between daddy, mommy and other people who were in another boat were able to help her, but with the scare the ride didn’t feel beautiful anymore.

De Mallorca viajamos a Madrid y, mientras papá y mamá trabajaban, nos fuimos una semana al pueblo con los abuelos. Sabía que había que ir con cuidado porque allí no íbamos a estar solos, pero me apetecía ver a mis amigos antes de volver a casa.

From Mallorca we travelled to Madrid and, while daddy and mommy worked, we went to Navalacruz for a week. I knew that we had to be careful there, because we wouldn’t be by ourselves, but I wanted to see my friends before going back home.

Nos volvimos con tiempo, para pasar la cuarentena antes de volver al colegio. Los primeros días de otoño todavía tenían un aire de normalidad, pero poco después se empezaron a torcer las cosas. Este año habían preparado el colegio para que pudiéramos dar clase online. Se suponía que podía pasar de vez en cuando, pero se convirtió en la norma.

We returned with time, so that we could quarantine before going back to school. The first few days in the fall still felt normal, but soon after things started to get complicated. This year the school was prepared to switch to online learning, and it was expected that we would do it from time to time, but it became the norm.

Las celebraciones continuaron siendo privadas. Celebramos Halloween, pero no pudimos salir a buscar golosinas. A mi cumpleaños vinieron sólo Claudia y Luca, y no les he vuelto a ver desde entonces. Y a partir de ahí, sólo los cuatro para todo.

Celebrations continued to be private. We celebrated Halloween, but we could not go trick-or-treating. For my birthday we only had Claudia and Luca, and I have not seen them again since. From there on, it was the four of us for everything.

Aunque volvimos al colegio unas semanas durante el invierno, nos pusieron a todos en modo online a partir de marzo y ya no volvimos más. A mí me parece que lo de la enseñanza online está bien para unos días, pero cuando es todo el rato, se hace muy aburrido. Al final del curso ya ni sabía lo por dónde íbamos y me tuve que poner las pilas después de que la profesora me diera un toque de atención.

Even though we got back to the classrooms a few weeks during the winter, we were set back to online move in March, and we never got back. I think that online learning is alright for a few days, but when it is continuous, it becomes very boring. At the end of the year I didn’t know where we were at I had to hassle a bit after my teacher gave me a warning.

En casa hemos visto un montón de series en Netflix. Tantas que a veces empezábamos a verlas otra vez. Papá y mamá intentaron intervenir para que viéramos algunas antiguas, pero Diego y yo nos resistimos. De todo lo que se les ocurrió, sólo aceptamos Verano Azul, porque me recordaba a los veranos en el pueblo, y Full House, que acabó siendo más divertida de lo que me imaginaba.

At home we have seen a lot of Netflix shows. So many that sometimes we started to watch them again. Daddy and mommy tried to intervene and suggested that we watched some old shows, but Diego and I resisted. From everything they came up with we only accepted Verano Azul, because it reminded me the summers in Spain, and Full House, which ended up being funnier than I had thought.

Con el buen tiempo empezamos a salir un poco más. Mamá se compró una bicicleta, y poco después le compró una a papá para que pudiéramos salir todos juntos en bici. No es que fuéramos muy lejos, pero pudimos hacer un tipo distinto de paseo.

Over time, we started to go out more. Mommy bought a bicycle for herself, and soon after one for daddy, so that we could all bike together. We didn’t go very far, but we could make a different type of outing.

La vacunación contra el COVID-19 empezó en Navidad, pero no se extendió lo suficiente hasta la primavera. De momento es sólo para personas mayores, pero nos ha dado la esperanza de volver a una vida más normal. Cambiaron las normas para viajar y para entrar en sitios públicos, y a finales de junio se nos ocurrió tomarnos unas pequeñas vacaciones para celebrarlo.

The vaccination against COVID-19 started in Christmas, but it didn’t go very fast until mid-spring. For now, it’s only for older people, but it has given us hope that we will get back to a more normal life. The travel rules started to change as the norms to go to public places, and at the end of June we decided to make a quick vacation trip to celebrate.

Nos fuimos a las Islas de la Madeleine, que están al norte de Quebec. Pensábamos que por la época del año podríamos ir a la playa, pero resultó ser un poco pronto.

We went to Les Isles de la Madeleine, which are in northern Quebec. We thought that at that time of the year we could go to the beach, but it happened to be a bit too early.

Pese al frío y a lo improvisado del viaje, estuvo bien salir de casa, comer en restaurantes, y conocer un sitio nuevo.

Despite the cold and the trip being improvised, it was great to get out of the house, eat in restaurants and get to know a new place.

Haciendo balance del año, la verdad es que ha sido complicado. Siento que he crecido, no sólo físicamente, sino también por dentro, pero no he podido compartirlo con mis amigos. Apenas he visto a nadie y sólo nos hemos podido comunicar online. Lo paso bien jugando al Roblox y al Minecraft, pero no es suficiente.

Reflecting on the year, the truth is that it has been complicated. I feel that I have grown, not only physically, but also inside, but I haven’t been able to share it with my friends. I have barely seen anyone, and we have only been able to communicate online. I enjoy playing Roblox and Minecraft, but it is not enough.

En unos días, si todo va bien, nos vamos a España de nuevo y papá ha dicho que ni tablet ni ordenador. Sé que me va a costar, pero sé también que una vez que me encuentre de nuevo con el mundo de verdad, no lo voy a echar de menos.

In a few days, if everything goes well, we will go to Spain again and daddy has said that neither tablet nor computer can travel. I know it is going to be tough, but I also know that once I am back in the real world, I am not going to miss it.
