Lleno en casa / Full house

Después de tanto tiempo siendo sólo papá, mamá y yo, este verano la casa ha estado llena de actividad. Unos de visita y otros (Diego quiero decir) para quedarse, nos han traído un toque de variedad.

After so much time being daddy, mommy and myself, this summer the house has been full of activity. Some to visit and some (Diego I mean) to stay, they have brought us a touch of variety.

Primero fue la abuela Chela, que llegó al comienzo de junio cuando mamá tenía la barriga grande. Todos los días íbamos al parque y le enseñé todo lo que sabía hacer en los columpios. Como mamá estaba de vacaciones, salíamos a menudo a dar paseos y a comer por ahí.

First it was Grandma Chela, who arrived early in June when mommy still had a big tummy. Every day we went to the park and I showed to her everything I could do in the children’s playground. And because mommy was on vacation, we went for a walk and to eat out often.

La abuela me trajo un libro para aprender palabras en español: “Coquito”, que parece ser la piedra angular de la formación lingüística peruana. Aprendí muchas palabras, como uña, aguja o enano, y en unos pocos días ya decía muchas frases en español.

Grandma brought me a book to learn words in Spanish: “Coquito”, which seems to be the cornerstone of the Peruvian linguistic education. I learned a lot of words, like uña (nail), aguja (needle) or enano (dwarf), and in a few days I could say a lot of sentences in Spanish.

Luego llegó el tío Javier, aunque yo le llamaba abuelo Javier (nota: no es bueno llamar a los hijos igual que a los padres, que luego te haces un lío). Al principio quería jugar conmigo, y se bajaba juegos de niños para la iPad, pero yo creo que al final estaba un poco cansado y se acabó yendo unos días a Montreal para despejarse.

Then Uncle Javier arrived, though I called him Grandpa Javier (note: it is not a good idea to name children the same as their parents because you can get confused). In the beginning he wanted to play with me, and he downloaded children’s games in his iPad, but I believe that he got a bit tired and he ended up leaving to Montreal for a couple of days to breathe a bit.



Y Diego, claro. Ya os conté hace un par de meses cómo apareció por sorpresa. Pues parece que se va a quedar. Los primeros días sólo dormía y no decía mucho, pero está creciendo un montón y cada vez está más despierto. A mí me gusta abrazarle y le ayudo con el chupete, pero mamá me dice que tenga cuidado porque es pequeño. Bueno, más pequeñas son las otras muñecas y cuando juego con ellas no me dice nada.

And Diego, of course. I already told you how a couple of months ago he came out of nowhere. Well, it seems that he is here to stay. The first few days he only slept and he did not say much, but he is growing a lot and he is more and more awake. I like to hug him and I help him with the soother, but mommy tells me to be careful because he is little. Well, the other dolls I have are smaller than him and when I play with them she does not say anything.

El día que llegamos a casa del hospital, el mismo que el tío Javier llegó de Perú, la abuela Chela y mamá me dieron un regalo: una muñeca en una cuna. Me dijeron que era un regalo de Diego, pero yo no me lo creo. A él no le dio tiempo a comprarlo en el hospital y todavía no tiene tarjeta de crédito. Yo creo que lo trajo el tío Javier, y seguro que le cobraron en Air Canada por exceso de equipaje.

The day we arrived home from the hospital, the same day that Uncle Javier arrived from Peru, Grandma Chela and mommy gave me a present: a doll in a crib. They said it was Diego’s present, but I don’t believe it. He did not have time to buy it in the hospital and he does not have a credit card yet. I think that it was Uncle Javier who brought it, and I’m sure Air Canada charged him for extra baggage.

A finales de Junio fue la graduación en el Busy Bee. Era una fiesta en la que nos vestían igual, nos ponían en un escenario, y nos hacían cantar. Yo lo pasé un poco mal: entre el estrés del nacimiento de Diego y que sólo iba dos días por semana a Busy Bee, no había tenido mucho tiempo para practicar. Pero al final todo salió bien y me dieron un premio por mis habilidades comunicativas. Me pregunto si iba con segundas, ahora que decía las palabras del “Coquito”.

At the end of June we had the graduation at Busy Bee. It was a celebration in which we were all dressed the same, we were set on a stage, and were asked to sing. I struggled a bit: between the stress related to Diego’s birth and the fact that I only went twice a week to Busy Bee, I had not had much time to practice. But everything worked out well and I received an award for my communications skills. I wonder whether I had to read between the lines, now that I used the words I learned from “Coquito”.

Ahora la abuela Chela y el tío Javier han regresado a Perú, pero el abuelo Pablo y la abuela Nieves llegan en unos días, con lo que la actividad continuará. Yo mientras me entretengo con la iPad de mamá. Tiene un montón de juegos y además allí está mi amigo “gato” (talking Tom Cat) al que le cuento lo que hago y él lo repite, para que sepa que lo ha entendido.

Now Grandma Chela and Uncle Javier are back in Peru, but Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves will arrive in a few days, which will keep the activity going. Meanwhile I spend time playing with mommy’s Ipad. It has a lot of games and there I can find my friend “gato” (talking Tom Cat) whom I tell everything I do and he repeats it, so that I know he has understood it.

Bebé Diego / Baby Diego

Como dice la canción: “¡sorpresas te da la vida!” Yo que voy a la guardería tan normal y cuando vuelvo tengo un hermano.

As the song goes: “life brings you surprises!” One day you go to daycare and when you come out you have a brother.

Ya me imaginaba que la historia del bebé tenía que acabar de alguna manera porque mamá no podía seguir con esa barriga, pero lo de hoy me pilló por sorpresa. En retrospectiva debería haber prestado atención a algunas pistas:

I imagined that the baby story had to end up somehow, because mommy could not carry on with that belly, but today’s events caught me off guard. In hindsight I should have paid attention to some hints:

1) Era martes y me llevaron al Busy Bee, cuando yo sólo voy miércoles y viernes; 2) Papá y la abuela Chela me fueron a buscar a la guardería y cuando pregunté por mamá me dieron una respuesta imprecisa; 3) Todos felicitaban a papá, pero España aún no ha ganado la Eurocopa. En definitiva, cosas raras.

1) It was Tuesday and they took me to Busy Bee, when I only go on Wednesdays and Fridays; 2) Daddy and Grandma Chela came to pick me up and when I asked about mommy they gave me a vague answer; 3) Everyone was congratulating daddy, but Spain has not won the Euro Cup yet. In summary: weird things.

Andaba yo confundida cuando llegamos al hospital y encontramos a mamá en una cama. Ya no tenía la barriga y Diego, que al parecer salió de ella, estaba tumbado junto a ella. Yo tenía ganas de estar con mamá y me subí a la cama con ellos, aunque mamá me dijo que tuviera cuidado porque todavía le dolía. Me pregunto yo cómo habrá salido Diego de ahí.

I was confused when we arrived to the hospital and we found mommy lying on a bed. She did not have the belly anymore and Diego, who seems to have come out of it, was lying beside her. I also wanted to be with her and I jumped on the bed with them, though mommy told me to be careful because it hurt. I wonder how Diego came out from there.

¡Mira, lo hice! / Look, I did it!

Es estupendo cuando empieza el buen tiempo y las oportunidades de hacer algo en la calle se multiplican. Este año no se había acabado el mes de marzo aún y ya pudimos ir al zoo. Esta vez me conocía casi todos los nombres de los animales pero el que me hacía más ilusión ver era el hipopótamo, o sea, al “hippo”, que cuando llegamos se estaba dando un baño en su piscina.

It’s great when there is good weather and the opportunities to do things outdoors increase. This year we were still in March and we already could visit the zoo. This time around I knew most of the animals’ names but the one I really wanted to see was the hippopotamus, I mean, the hippo, who was taking a bath in his pool when we arrived.

Y cuando digo hacer algo, lo digo en serio, porque cada vez puedo hacer más cosas sola, y eso me da mucha satisfacción: subirme a la silla, cerrarme la cremallera, quitarme la ropa, o dar de comer a una oveja en mi última visita a la granja. Cada vez que supero un nuevo reto me dan ganas de celebrarlo, y le digo a mamá: “look, I did it!” (“¡mira, lo hice!”).

And when I say do something, I really mean it, because every day I can do more and more things, and that gives me a great feel of accomplishment: climb to a chair, zip my jacket, take off my clothes, or feed a sheep in my last visit to the animal farm. Every time I overcome a challenge I feel like celebrating it, and I tell mommy: “look, I did it”.



También me lo paso muy bien y aprendo muchas cosas en las dos guarderías. Me gusta cuando hay actividades especiales, como el viaje a la granja, o como cuando le dimos una sorpresa a mamá en el día de la madre.

I also enjoy a lot my time at both daycares. I like when we do special activities, like the day we went to the farm, or like when we surprised mommy on Mother’s Day.

En casa algunas cosas están cambiando. Papá y mamá dicen que es para prepararnos para la llegada de mi hermanito. Yo no sé de qué hablan. Por ejemplo, hemos cambiado el coche de mamá por una furgoneta. Ellos dicen que es para que quepamos mejor cuando seamos cuatro, pero yo creo que es para que entre mamá, porque tiene la barriga tan grande que en el otro coche ya no entraba.

At home some things are changing. Daddy and mommy say that it is because we have to prepare for my little brother’s arrival. I don’t know what they are talking about. For example, we have changed mommy’s car for a van. They say that this way the four of us will fit in better, but I believe that it actually is to make room for mommy, because her womb is so big that she did not fit in her old car.

A mí lo que me gusta de la furgoneta no es que se pueda llenar de cosas o de gente, sino que puedo ver mis DVDs de Elmo, Barney, y Baby Sunshine (Einstein, quiero decir), y así los viajes se me hacen más cortos.

What I like the most of the van is not that it can be filled with things or people, but the fact that I can watch my DVDs of Elmo, Barney, and Baby Sunshine (Einstein, I mean), and that way trips feel much shorter.

Esta no es la furgoneta, sino mi nuevo coche para el jardín, que también está bien aunque no tenga DVD.

This is not the van, but my new backyard car, which is also great even without a DVD player.

Además me han comprado una cama nueva pero yo prefiero seguir durmiendo en mi cuna y uso la cama para jugar. En realidad lo que me gusta es dormirme con papá y mamá viendo la tele. Cuando empiezo a tener sueño me ponen el canal de música barroca y me quedo dormida acurrucada con ellos escuchando a Bach, Vivaldi o Pachelbel.

Besides, I have a new bed but I still prefer to sleep in my crib and the bed is just another toy. Actually, what I like is to fall asleep with daddy and mommy watching TV. When I start to feel tired they turn on the Galaxy Baroque channel and I fall asleep curled up with them listening to Bach, Vivaldi, or Pachelbel.

Afortunadamente, la verdad sea dicha, no toda la música en la televisión es barroca.

Fortunately, truth be told, not everything not all music on TV is baroque.

Mío / Mine

Este año celebré mis terceras navidades pero en realidad fue la primera vez que me di cuenta de qué estaba pasando. Primero porque mamá compró un árbol de Navidad y lo decoró con bolas de colores. Segundo porque en Busy Bee organizaron un concierto navideño y todos nos aprendimos una canción.

This year I celebrated my third Christmas but it was actually the first time I realized what was going on. First because mommy bought a Christmas tree and garnished it with coloured balls. Second because at Busy Bee we had a Christmas concert and we all learned a new song.

Durante dos semanas nos preparamos, aunque yo no sabía muy bien para qué, y cuando llegó el día y nos subieron al escenario no sabía dónde esconderme: no me imaginaba que habría tanta gente mirando y yo sólo quería bajarme e ir con mamá.

During the two weeks leading up to it we practiced but I was not sure what for, and when the day arrived they put us all on a stage and I did not know where to hide: I could never imagine there would be so many people staring and I only wanted to step down and go with mommy.



En Nochebuena aparecieron unos regalos debajo del árbol: papá tenía uno, mamá otro, y yo unos cuantos: libros, puzles, muñecos y DVDs. On Christmas Eve a few gifts showed up under the tree: daddy had done, mommy another one, and I had a few: books, puzzles, toys and DVDs. The DVD that I like the most is an Elmo movie (The adventures of Elmo in Grouchland). In this link you can watch the entire film if you want to check whether you like it as well.

Papá dice que además de ver a los muñecos cantar tengo que prestar atención y aprender algo de la historia. No sé por qué, pero dice que me parezco al malo de la película porque mi palabra preferida es “mine” (mío) y que tengo que aprender a compartir, pero yo creo que exagera.

Daddy says that besides watching the muppets sing I need to pay attention and learn something from the story. I don’t know why, but he says that I look like the villain in the movie because my preferred word is “mine” and that I need to learn how to share, but I think he is exaggerating.



Lo que papá no entiende es que compartir es relativo: ¿qué cosas de que las yo quiero les pueden interesar a papá o a mamá? Ellos por llevarme la contraria me dicen que no es eso, que me vaya preparando para compartir con un hermanito y señalan a la tripa de mamá. No sé qué clase de hermanito será, porque por ahora sólo hace que mamá engorde y esté cansada.

What daddy does not understand is that sharing is something relative: out of the things I want, what would be of interest to him or mommy? They just counterargument and say that it’s not about that, that I should be getting ready to share with a little brother and they point to mommy’s tummy. I don’t know what kind of brother he will be, because for now he just makes mommy gain weight and make her tired.

Aunque el invierno no ha sido muy frío, nos tomamos unas vacaciones en enero para ir a la playa. Estuvimos en México, que es un país cerca de Canadá donde hace buen tiempo y hablan español, aunque un poco raro.

Even though the winter has not been very cold, we went on vacation to the beach in January. We went to Mexico, which is a country near to Canada where the weather is good and people speak in Spanish, though a weird one.

El hotel al que fuimos estaba muy bien porque está preparado para niños de mi edad: piscina poco profunda, sala de juegos, juguetes en el comedor… y la playa también estaba muy bien. Y claro, tan bien me lo estaba pasando que me sentó un poco mal el día que a papá y mamá les dio por llevarme a ver unas ruinas: ¡unas ruinas en lugar de ir a la playa!

I like the hotel where we stayed because it was prepared for children my age: shallow pool, playpen, toys in the dinner room... and the beach was also quite good. And I was having so much fun that I did not take well the day that daddy and mommy decided to go and visit some ruins: ruins instead of spending the day on the beach!

Al volver el invierno ha seguido remoloneando y aunque ha nevado un par de veces, no ha sido nada serio. Yo que me había hecho con una pala para ayudar a papá a quitar la nieve y apenas he podido practicar. Al menos ya estoy preparada para el año que viene.

When we returned the winder has continued lazing about and even though it has snowed a couple of time, it has not been anything serious. I had even had gotten hold of a shovel to help daddy remove the snow and I have barely had a chance to practice. At least I’m ready for next year.

Mientras sigo aprendiendo a decir más cosas y ya sé pedir lo que quiero. Aunque entiendo tanto el inglés como el español se me da mejor hablar en inglés: me sé más canciones, y expresiones comunes: thank you (gracias), it’s too funny (es muy divertido), what happened? (¿qué pasó?), all done (se acabó), pero también tengo mis frases en español: se acabó, se cayó, calle. Hay algunas palabras que se me lían, sobre todo las que tienen el sonido “ch” y al ketchup le llamo “chepu”, al chupete “tepeche”, y al chicle “cliche”. ¡Qué se le va a hacer! ¡Imagino que son cosas del bilingüismo!

Meanwhile I continue to learn how to say more things and I already know how to ask for what I want. Even though I understand both English and Spanish, I speak better in English: I know more songs, and common expressions: thank you, it’s too funny, what happened?, but I also have my sentences in Spanish: se acabó (all done), se cayó (it fell down), calle (street). There are some words that I get confused with, especially those with the sound “ch” and I say “chepu” instead of ketchup, “tepeche” instead of chupete (soother), and “cliche” instead of chicle (chewing gum). What can I do! That’s bilingualism I guess!

El otoño tiene principalmente cuatro cosas que tener en cuenta: 1) se caen las hojas de los árboles; 2) el día de Acción de Gracias; 3) Halloween; y 4) mi cumpleaños. Lo que viene después ya no es otoño, sino la preparación para la Navidad.

The fall has four main things to take into account: 1) the leaves fall from the trees; 2) Thanksgiving Day; 3) Halloween; and 4) my birthday. What comes after that is not fall anymore, but the preparation for Christmas.

Poco después de volver de vacaciones empezaron a caerse las hojas. Me acordaba de cómo era del año pasado, pero esta vez ha sido más divertido porque he podido ayudar a papá a recogerlas.

Soon after we came back from vacation the leaves started to fall from the trees. I remembered it from last year, but this time it has been more fun because I was able to help daddy pick them up.

Alrededor de Acción de Gracias es la época de ir a las granjas a recoger fruta. En Busy Bee nos llevaron a una y por primera vez vi de cerca animales como vacas, ovejas, cerdos o conejos. El fin de semana de Acción de Gracias fuimos a cenar a casa de Cheeyuen y me lo pasé muy bien jugando con los juguetes de Kay.

Around Thanksgiving is time to go to the farms and pick up fruit. At Busy Bee they took us on a trip to one and for the first time had the chance to see animals close up, like cows, sheep, pigs or bunnies. On Thanksgiving weekend we went to Cheeyuen’s for dinner and I had a great time playing with Kay’s toys.

Luego llega Halloween. Mamá me compró este año un traje de mariquita y me dio la sorpresa y apareció en la guardería cuando hacíamos el desfile. Me gustó mucho ver a mamá allí pero luego ya no me quería quedar y volvimos pronto a casa.

Soon after, Halloween arrives to town. This year mommy bought me a ladybug costume and she surprised me showing up at the daycare’s Halloween parade. I liked a lot seeing mommy there, but then I did not want to stay and we ended up returning home early.

Nos vino bien, porque teníamos que preparar la calabaza y esperar a que vinieran los niños a hacer “truco o trato”. Como mamá había comprado chocolatinas este año, los niños estaban contentos y nos chocaban los cinco.

It came handy, because we had to get the pumpkin ready and wait for the kids to start knocking our door for trick or treat. Mommy had bought chocolates this year and the neighbourhood kids gave us high fives.

Y luego llega mi cumpleaños. Este año fue un jueves y papá y mamá me llevaron a cenar. Nos reímos mucho, me dejaron comer patas fritas con ketchup, y para postre me pidieron lo que más gusta: helado de chocolate.

And a couple of weeks later it is my birthday. This year it fell on a Thursday and daddy and mommy took me out for dinner. We laughed a lot, they let me eat fries with ketchup, and for dessert they ordered what I liked the most: chocolate ice cream.

Venía con una vela, y al principio me dio un poco de miedo, porque estaba caliente al acercarse, pero con la ayuda de mis papás la apagamos soplando y me pude comer el helado.

It came with a candle, and in the beginning I was scared, because it was warm when I tried to reach it, but with parents’ help we were able to blow it out and I could eat my ice cream.

La otra sorpresa de cumpleaños fue el regalo de la abuela Chela: una cocina con todos los detalles. Papá se tiró un día entero montándola, pero al final mereció la pena, porque me gusta un montón.

The other birthday surprise was the gift I received from Grandma Chela: a kitchen with all the features. Daddy spent a whole day assembling it, but in the end it was worth it, because I like it a lot.

La verdad es que este otoño, además de las cuatro cosas habituales, ha sido la época de descubrir las palabras. Cada día aprendo alguna nueva. Ya sé cómo llamar a muchos animales: algunos en inglés (bunny (conejo), cow (vaca), zebra (cebra), monkey (mono), fish (pez), lion (león)), algunos en español (caballo, elefante) y otros por el sonido que hacen (cuack (pato), miau (gato), guau (perro), pio (pájaro), beh (oveja), kiriki (gallo)).

The truth is that this fall, besides the four usual things, it has been time for me to discover words. Every day I learn something new. I know how to call many animals: some in English (bunny, cow, zebra, monkey, fish, lion), some in Spanish (caballo (horse), elefante (elephant)) and others by the sounds they make (cuack (duck), miau (cat), guau (dog), pio (bird), beh (sheep), kiriki (rooster)).

Me lo paso muy bien con los libros de animales, poniendo al lado de cada uno pegatinas que corresponden con cada animal, o las piezas del puzle, que además hacen el sonido correspondiente.

I have a lot of fun with books about animals, placing matching stickers beside each picture, or puzzle pieces, which also make the corresponding sound.

Algunas cosas no sé cómo se llaman y les pongo un nombre por asociación hasta que aprenda el nombre de verdad. Por ejemplo, a la comida le llamo “ema” porque mamá siempre dice cuidado que quema. A las estrellas las llamo ”inkles” por la famosa canción “inkle, inkle, little star” y a Mickey Mouse “papo”, porque está en todos mis papos, que es como yo digo pañal. Y es que los de Walt Disney deberían tener más cuidado cuando deciden donde poner a sus personajes.

Some things I don’t know how they are called and I name them by associated things I know until I learn the true name. For example, I call the food “ema” (burning), because mommy always says be careful, it’s burning. I call the stars “inkles” because of the famous song “inkle, inkle, little star” and Mickey Mouse “papo”, because he is in all my papos, which is the name I give to my diapers. I think people at Walt Disney should be more careful about where they place they characters.

Si me gustaban poco las canciones, cada vez me gustan más. Y la que más me gusta de todas es la canción del abecedario. De hecho, cualquier canción puede cambiar sobre la marcha y convertirse en la canción del abecedario.

I liked songs before, but I like them every day more. The one that I like the most is the alphabet song. Indeed, any song can change at any time and turn into the alphabet song.

En la playa en España / On the beach in Spain

A finales de agosto viajamos a España de vacaciones. Aunque ya había estado el año pasado, esta vez fue distinto: un par de días después de llegar nos fuimos a la playa con los abuelos a un sitio en el sur cerca de Málaga.

At the end of August we travelled to Spain on vacation. Although I had been last year, this time it was different: a couple of days after arriving we went to the beach with my grandparents to a place in the South close to Malaga.

Yo iba preparada con el flotador que me había prestado Kay, pero los primeros días el agua me daba un poco de miedo porque tenía olas. La abuela Nieves me compró una barca para poder estar en el mar sin estar en el agua, y poco a poco me fui acostumbrando al vaivén de las olas.

I was all prepared with a puddle jumper that I had borrowed from Kay, but the first few days I was scared because there were waves in the water. Grandma Nieves bought me a inflatable boat to allow me to be on the water without getting in the water, and little by little I got used to the waves’ moves.

Al final, ya no solo no me daba miedo, sino que me gustaba jugar a correr en la orilla delante de las olas y esquivarlas.

In the end, I was not scared anymore, and I even liked to play on the shore running away from the waves and dodging them.

A veces nos tomábamos un respiro de playa y nos íbamos a visitar algún sitio bonito alrededor. Uno de esos días volviendo de Málaga en el tren, papá me dejo la cámara de fotos para que me entretuviera y yo saqué la primera foto de mi vida, lo que les pilló un poco por sorpresa.

Some days we took a break from beach time and we went to visit beautiful places close by. One of those coming back from Malaga by train, daddy let me play with the camera to keep me busy and I took the first picture of my life, something that took them by surprise.

Otro día decidimos quedarnos en la piscina del hotel y mientras todos leían, descansaban o tomaban el sol, me fui a dar una vuelta a jugar con los ascensores. Yo no me enteré de nada, pero cuando volví me encontré a mamá con mala cara y todo el mundo buscándome. Yo no sé por qué montaron tanto lío, pero ya no me dejaron irme sola nunca más.

Another day we decided to stay in the hotel’s swimming pool area and while everyone read, rested or sunbathed, I walked away to play with the elevators. I don’t know what happened but when I came back I found mommy grim-faced and everyone was looking for me. I don’t know why they made such a big deal of it, but they did not allow me to wander away never again.

Al volver a Madrid fuimos a visitar al tío Oswaldo que, como siempre, nos recibió con cosas ricas para comer, y nos reímos mucho con los primos después de cenar. También nos vimos con amigos de papá y mamá y nos dimos un paseo por el Retiro.

When we returned to Madrid we went to visit uncle Oswaldo, who as usual welcomed us with yummy things to eat, and we had a lot of fun with my cousins after dinner. We also met with daddy’s and mommy’s friends and we went for a walk in the Retiro.

Papá y mamá se fueron seis días a Italia, así, sin avisar. No me quisieron decir nada para que no llorara, y no me podían llevar porque dicen que en Italia hay mucho que ver y yo todavía camino despacio. La verdad es que, a juzgar por las fotos que trajeron, sí que hay mucho que ver en Italia, y eso que sólo estuvieron en el norte.

Daddy and mommy went on a trip to Italy for six days, without telling me anything. They did not want to let me know so that I did not cry, and they could not take me with them because they say that there is a lot to see in Italy and I still walk very slowly. Truth be told, based on the pictures they brought back, there is a lot to see in Italy, and that considering that they only went to the North part.

Yo mientras tanto me quedé con los abuelos y aunque me puse un poco mala, nos lo pasamos muy bien. Fuimos de paseo, de compras, e incluso me corté el pelo por primera vez en una peluquería.

Meanwhile I stayed with my grandparents and though I was sick for a couple of days, we had a great time. We went out walking, shopping, and even I had my first haircut in a hairdresser’s.

En estos días me hice muy amiga de Pre. Él no había podido venir a la playa, pero cuando volvimos pasamos mucho tiempo juntos. Cuando salíamos a pasear a Pre le gustaba ponerse al lado de mi cochecito y a la hora de comer, debajo de mi silla para recoger lo que se me caía. Nos llevábamos tan bien que al final yo le dejaba mis juguetes y él me dejaba los suyos.

During these days Pre and I became best friends. He had not been able to come to the beach, but when we returned we spent a lot of time together. When we went out on a stroll Pre liked walking side by side with my stroller, and at meals time, he was always under my chair to pick up anything I dropped. We got along so well that in the end I let he play with my toys and he let me play with his.

Y así, sin darnos cuentas se pasaron los días y tuvimos que volver a casa con estos recuerdos en la maleta. No nos dio tiempo a hacer todas las visitas que nos habría gustado, así que tendremos que regresar pronto.

And like that, almost without noticing, the days went by and we had to come back home with all these memories in the suitcase. We did not have time to visit everyone we would have liked, so we will have to return soon.

Días guau de verano / Guau days of summer

Yo sabía que había guaus de muchas clases. Cuando vamos a pasear por el barrio veo perros grandes, medianos y pequeños, blancos, marrones y negros, peludos y no peludos. Pero un día fuimos al zoo y descubrí que hay muchas más clases de guaus: con cuernos, con trompa, con cuello largo. Vamos, que el mundo está lleno de guaus.

I already knew there are many sorts of guaus. When we go for a walk in the neighbourhood I see dogs of all kinds: large, medium and small, white, brown and black, furry and thin haired. But one day we went to the zoo and I found out that there are many more types: some have horns, some a trunk, some long neck. The world seems to be full of guaus.

Tantos, que un día me encontré uno negro debajo de la cama de mis papás, pero luego me explicaron que eso no era un guau, sino un miau. Al principio eso me pareció muy confuso, pero me enseñaron fotos de otros miaus en un libro y ahora ya sé diferenciar un miau de un guau. El nuestro es una miau se llama Miss Honey y es muy tímida, y ahora me pregunto si todos esos animales del zoo son guaus o no.

So many, that one day I found a black one underneath my parents’ bed, but they later explained to me that it was not a guau, but a miau. In the beginning I thought that was very confusing, but they showed me pictures of other miaus on a book and now I can tell miaus and guaus apart. Our miau’s name is Miss Honey and she is very shy, and now I wonder whether all those animals in the zoo are guaus or not.

La última vez que fuimos a visitar a Cheeyuen, Sching y Kay, saludé a sus miaus correctamente y aunque los miaus se esconden más que los guaus, me entendí bien con ellos. Luego nos fuimos a cenar todos juntos y me lo pasé muy bien jugando con Kay.

Last time we visited Cheeyuen, Sching and Kay, I greeted their miaus correctly and even though miaus hide more than guaus, I got on well with them. Later on we went out for dinner and I had a great time playing with Kay.

Es verano y hace bastante calor, pero nada como lo que pasamos cuando viajamos a Texas. Fuimos a Dallas a visitar al abuelo Javier y pasamos una semana con él y con Charo. Hacía tanto calor que no daban ganas de salir de casa, o del coche: hasta tienen restaurantes que te sirven la comida en el coche para que no te derritas al salir.

It is summertime and it is quite hot, but nothing compared with how hot it is in Texas. We travelled to Dallas to visit Grandpa Javier and we spent there a week with him and Charo. It was so hot that it did not feel like leaving the house, or the car: they even have restaurants that serve the food inside the car so that you don’t melt when you go out.

El abuelo y Charo estaban muy contentos. Creo que se les hacía un poco raro porque no tienen mucha práctica con niños pequeños, pero nos lo pasamos muy bien yendo de compras, a comer, a ver un parque de dinosaurios y a visitar el rancho de JR. A ver si se animan a venir un día a Canadá, para que prueben otro clima.

Grandpa Javier and Charo were very happy. I think they felt a little off because they don’t have a lot of experience with toddlers, but we had a great time going shopping, out for dinner, at a dinosaur park, and visiting JR’s ranch. Let’s see if they decide to come one day to Canada, so that they can taste a different climate.

Hicimos un pequeño viaje por Texas y conocimos Houston y San Antonio: hacía calor en todos los sitios. Mamá quería que me bañara y lo intentó en la piscina, y luego en la playa en Galveston, pero se me había olvidado cómo era y me daba miedo. Cuando regresamos a Toronto y empezamos las clases de natación le cogí el truco y ahora lo difícil es sacarme de la piscina una vez que me meto dentro.

We went on a trip around Texas and visited Houston and San Antonio: it was hot everywhere. Mommy wanted me to take a bath and she tried it in the pool and then on the beach in Galveston, but I had forgotten how it was and it scared me. When we came back to Toronto and I we started this year’s swimming lessons, I got the knack and now it is difficult to get me out of the pool once I’m in it.

La semana pasada fue el cumpleaños de mamá y nos fuimos a dar un paseo en barco. Era una visita a las 1000 islas. Yo ya había montado en un barco (o algo parecido) justo hace un año cuando fuimos a Boston, pero éste era un barco de verdad.

Last week it was mommy’s birthday and we went on a boat trip. It was a visit to 1000 islands. I had already been on a boat (or something similar) last year when we went to Boston, but this was a real one.

Al principio papá y mamá no me dejaban subir a la cubierta pero como querían ver las islas, al final me dejaron y me lo pasé muy bien jugando en el barco y dejando que el aire me diera en la cara.

In the beginning my parents did not let me go up on the deck but because they had to go out to see the islands they ended up letting me and I had a great time playing on the boat and letting the wind blow in my face.

En julio cambié de guardería. Sigo yendo con papá tres días a la semana a la guardería del trabajo, donde ya me han promocionado a la sala de los que no son bebés, pero ahora también voy a Busy Bee, que está al lado de casa, los otros dos días. La verdad es que me lo paso mejor que en la casa de la señora Rose y a mis papás les viene mejor.

In July I changed daycare. I still go with daddy three days a week to the daycare at work, where I have been promoted to the toddler room, but now I also go to Busy Bee, which is close to home, the other two days. The truth is that I have more fun now than in Miss Rose’s home and it is more convenient for my parents.

Así que con tanto cambio en la guardería y con planes de fin de semana, se pasan más rápido los días guau de verano.

This way, with so many changes in daycare and different weekend plans, the guau days of summer just fly by.
