Llegó la primavera / The spring is here

La calle ha cambiado de aspecto desde que se ha quitado la nieve. Ahora puedo salir sin ponerme la manta hasta los ojos y ver cosas que antes no veía. Si esto es la primavera, me gusta.

The streets have changed since the snow is gone. Now I can go out without covering my face with a blanket and I can see things that I did not see before. If this is what spring brings, I like it.

En las últimas semanas el mundo ha cambiado a mi alrededor. Sin apenas darme cuenta he empezado a ver cosas que antes pasaban desapercibidas. Cosas que estaban lejos y no veía ahora las puedo ver, cosas que eran pequeñas y no apreciaba ahora las quiero coger, formas que antes no distinguía ahora tienen significado para mí.

In the last few weeks the world has changed around me. Without hardly realizing I have started to see things that used to go unnoticed. Things that were far and I could not see now I see, things that were small and I could not appreciate now I want to grab them, shapes that i could not differentiate now mean something to me. 

Además, mis manos han dejado de temblar y puedo coger mis juguetes y mi chupete, y taparme con la manta o con el babero, según la ocasión. He aprendido a estar sentada con la ayuda del Bumbo, que mamá ha comprado para que pueda estar con mis papás durante las comidas literalmente sobre la mesa.

Besides, my hands have stopped shaking and I can grab my toys and my soother, and cover my face with the blanket or with the bib, depending on the occasion. I have learned how to stay sitting using the Bumbo, which mommy has bought for me to have the chance to sit with my parents during meals literally on the table.

Los abuelos Nieves y Pablo vinieron de España y luego se fueron a visitar a los primos Clara y Martin que viven en Portland y vinieron otra vez y luego volvieron a España. La abuela quería tenerme en brazos todo el tiempo, lo cual yo agradecía, pero ahora a papá y mamá les cuesta seguir el ritmo. El abuelo me ponía en el Skype para que me vieran desde España los tíos abuelos y la bisabuela Mercedes que no se acuerda bien de cómo me llamo.

Grandma Nieves and Grandpa Pablo came from Spain, and then went to visit cousins Clara and Martin, who live in Portland, and they came again, and then they went back to Spain. Granma wanted to hold me in her arms all the time, which I appreciated, but now daddy and mommy cannot keep up the pace. Grandpa sat me at the Skype webcam so that my great-aunts, great-uncles and Great-granma Mercedes could see me, though Great-grandma does not remember my name very well. 

La abuela es representante internacional de “cinco lobitos”, que es una canción que me repetía y que ahora canta en Skype. Por lo que he visto es una canción famosa, porque los primos también se la saben y mamá dice que hay una versión peruana llamada “pollito asado” (creo que no hay lobos en Perú). El abuelo decía que él cantaba mejor, pero nunca se atrevió con los cinco lobitos y pensé que era un farol hasta que cantó un día en el coche canciones que no son de iPod pero que sonaban bonitas.

Grandma represents "five little wolves" internationally, which is a song that she used to repeat and now sings through Skype. It seems to be a famous song, because my cousins also know it and mommy says that there is a Peruvian version called "roasted little chicken" (I believe there are no wolves in Peru). Grandpa said that he could sing better than anyone, but he never attempted five little wolves and I thought he was bluffing, until he sang one day in the car songs that are not iPod like but sounded good.

La semana pasada dormí por primera vez fuera de casa, en un hotel en Buffalo. Era también la primera vez que iba a Estados Unidos, que es como Canadá pero con las calles más anchas, que les hacen falta porque tienen coches más grandes. Los estadounidenses también se parecen a los canadienses, porque hablan en inglés, aunque son más gordos, que imagino es la razón por la que tienen coches más grandes y calles más anchas. ¿O es al revés? Como tienen las calles más anchas, hacen coches más grandes y comen más para llenarlos. No sé.

Last week I slept away from home for the very first time, in a hotel in Buffalo. It was my first time in the United States, a country like Canada but with wider roads, which they need because they have bigger cars. Americans are similar to Canadians, because they speak in English, though they are fatter, which I imagine is the reason why they have bigger cars and wider roads. Or is it the other way around? Because they have wider roads, they build bigger cars, and then they need to eat more to fill them in. I don't know.

Ahora que hemos empezado a hacer tantas cosas fuera de casa me gusta más salir, escuchar los sonidos de la calle, sentir el calor del sol en la cara, mirar a la gente que pasea en el centro comercial y me saluda al pasar, e incluso las que no saludan, como las personas quietas que miran desde los escaparates de las tiendas.

Now that we are doing so many things outdoors I like more and more going out, listening the street sounds, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face, looking at people who walk around in the mall and say hi when they pass by, and even at those who don't say anything when they stand still looking from the window shops.

Mis papás / My parents

Mis papás son buenas personas. Desde que nací se han portado muy bien conmigo: me dan de comer, me bañan, me cambian los pañales, me cambian de ropa, me ayudan a dormir y me aguantan cuando me pongo a llorar.

My parents are good people. Since I was born they have been good with me: they feed me, they bathe me, they change my diapers, they change my clothes, they help me go to sleep, and they put up with me when I cry.

Me gusta cuando jugamos juntos, cuando me llevan en brazos, cuando me cantan, cuando me llevan de paseo, cuando me dejan tumbarme en su cama. Hoy nos hemos hecho unas fotos juntos y he decido hablar de ellos.

I like when we play, when they hold me in their arms, when they sing to me, when they take me out for a walk, when they let me lie on their bed. Today we have taken some pictures together and I have decided to talk about them.

Mamá se llama Roxana. Bueno, se llama muchas cosas más por eso de los nombres compuestos y los apellidos múltiples, pero Roxana es como le llaman. Es alta y delgada, aunque dice que tiene que adelgazar del embarazo y todos los días corre y salta con la Wii.

Mommy's name is Roxana. Well, one of the many names she has if you count middle name and compound last names, but Roxana is how she is called. She is tall and slim, though she says that she needs to lose the pregnancy weight and every day she runs an jumps with the Wii.

Mamá pasa mucho tiempo conmigo porque está de baja de maternidad. Antes que yo naciera ella trabajaba en Labatt, que es una empresa de cerveza, donde controlaba las finanzas del departamento de marketing, que necesitan ayuda con los números, y me ha dicho que va a volver cuando yo tenga un año.

Mommy spends lots of time with me because she is on maternity leave. Before I was born she used to work for Labatt, which is a beer company, where she was a finance controller in the marketing department, where they need help with numbers, and she has told me that she will go back when I am one year old.

Mamá es paciente. Le gusta dormir y hacer deporte. Es buena con los números pero a veces se lia explicando las cosas. Es rápida preparando el baño, cocinando y arreglando la casa. Mamá no canta bien, pero tiene buen gusto para elegir la música (bueno, y para muchas cosas más).

Mommy is patient. She likes to sleep and to play sports. She is good with numbers but sometimes gets muddled up explaining things. She is quick setting up the bath, cooking and sorting out the house. Mommy does not sing well, but she has good taste when she chooses the music she plays (well, and in many other ways).

Papá se llama David. Es alto y delgado y tiene barba. Dice que es barba de invierno pero yo todavía no le he visto sin ella. Yo creo que no se afeita para ahorrar tiempo.

Daddy's name is David. He is tall and slim and he has a beard. He says that it is a winter beard but I have not seen him without it yet. I think he does not shave to save time.

Papá es bueno con los números y también con las letras. Además le gusta aprender y siempre tiene cosas interesantes que contar. Los números le ayudan a entenderse con mamá y las letras le sirven para ayudarme a mí con el blog.

Daddy is good with numbers and also with words. Besides he likes to learn and always has interesting things to tell. Numbers help him and mommy understand each other and words are useful for him to help me with the blog.

Papá trabaja en TELUS, que es una empresa de telecomunicaciones, pero yo creo que es una tapadera de zoológico porque sólo trae a casa peluches de peces, monos o cabras. Dice que ayuda a planificar las operaciones, pero yo sólo le veo con hojas de cálculo y hablando por teléfono.

Daddy works for TELUS, which is a telecommunications company, but I think it is actually a cover up for a zoo, because he only brings home critters like fishes, monkeys or goats. He says he works on operations planning, but I only see him working with spreadsheets and talking on the phone.

Papá viene tarde a casa porque trabaja mucho y luego monta los muebles del Ikea, que es muy divertido de ver, porque se queja todo el rato. Papá me pasea por la casa para que vea la lámpara de la escalera y las luces que entran por las ventanas. Tampoco canta muy bien, pero lo hace mejor que mamá, y por suerte le deja a ella elegir la ropa que me pongo, porque él no se fija mucho en eso.

Daddy comes home late because he works a lot and then he assembles Ikea's furniture, which is fun to see, because he complains all the time. Daddy walks me around the house so that I can see the lamp in the staircase and the lights that come through the windows. He does not sing well either, but he does it better than mommy, and fortunately he lets her choose the clothes I put on, because he does not pay much attention to those things.

Yo he aprendido muchas cosas en las últimas semanas. Ya sé para qué sirven las manos y ahora además de pegar al pingüino ya puedo agarrarlo. Lo malo es que no puedo llevármelo a la boca porque está enganchado a la manta de ejercicios.

I have learned a lot of things in the last few weeks. I already know what the hands are for and now, besides hitting the penguin I can seize it. The only issue is that I cannot take it into my mouth because it is attached to the play mat.

Ya duermo la noche del tirón porque ahora bebo biberones más grandes. Me gusta hablar después de comer, sobre todo hacer las vocales y una “r” francesa larga con la garganta.

I now sleep through the night because I drink large size bottles. I like to talk after eating, especially long vowel sounds and a long French "r" that I make with my throat. 

Mamá me ha dicho que no se me olvide felicitar el año nuevo chino (¿otro año nuevo?), que es el Año del Tigre, ni el día de San Valentín, que es la fiesta de los que se quieren, y además es el cumpleaños del abuelo Pablo. Pues eso, mucha felicidad y mucho amor para todos, que es lo que hace que niñas como yo lleguen a este mundo.

Mommy has told me not to forget to send best wishes because today is Chinese New Year (new year again?), which is the Year of the Tiger, and because today is Valentine Day, the celebration of those who love each other, and besides it is Grandpa Pablo's birthday. Well, there you are, lots of happiness and love for everyone, which is what makes girls like me get to this world.

Feliz Año Nuevo / Happy New Year

Me ha costado un poco entender esto de que es año nuevo cuando yo sólo tengo dos meses, pero es que parece que hay dos formas de contar años: la de cada uno y la de todos, y el año nuevo es la de todos, que es como una fiesta de cumpleaños muy grande a la que todo el mundo está invitado. Así que ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

It has taken me a little to understand that it is a new year when I am only 2 months old, but it seems that there are two ways to keep the count of years: each one's and everyone's, and the New Year is everyone's way, which is like a big birthday party that everybody can attend. Happy New Year then!

También pasamos la Navidad, que fue distinta porque vino el tío Javier, había luces alrededor de la casa y un pavo que no se acababa nunca. Hace un par de semanas que nos hemos quedado solos mamá, papá y yo: el pavo ya no está, y la abuela Chela y el tío Javier han regresado a Perú aliviados porque allí es ahora verano y no tiene que quitar la nieve para salir de casa.

We have also celebrated Christmas, which was different because Uncle Javier came to visit, there were lights around the house, and a turkey that seemed to be here to stay. Since two weeks ago mommy, daddy and I are on our own: the turkey is gone, and Grandma Chela and Uncle Javier have returned to Peru, relieved because it is Summer there now and they don't have to shovel snow to get out of the house.

El tío al principio me tenía un poco de miedo pero al final nos reíamos bastante juntos. La abuela estuvo más tiempo, me hablaba mucho y me ponía música para niños.

Uncle Javier was a little scared when he arrived but in the end we laughed much together. Grandma Chela was here longer, she talked to me a lot, and she played music for children.

Últimamente paso más tiempo despierta durante el día y juego con mi carrusel móvil y mi manta de ejercicios. Al principio me daba un poco de rabia y les gritaba a los animalitos porque no podía hacerles nada, pero ya he aprendido a pegar al pingüino y al cocodrilo y el osito se ríe conmigo y toca una canción. Mi próximo objetivo: pegar al osito. Echa un vistazo al álbum de 1 mes si quieres ver mis progresos.

Lately I spend more time awake during the day and I play with my mobile and my playmat. In the beginning it annoyed me that I could not do anything with the little animals and I yelled at them a lot, but I have learned how to hit the penguin and the crocodile and the little bear laughs and plays a song. Tallas grandes / Large sizes

Creo que soy un bebé grande. Cuando naces por cesárea no te das cuenta porque sales en un momento, desnuda y así te encuentras tan bien. Pero cuando te empiezas a poner ropa y la que se supone que es de tu edad no te vale entonces empiezas a sospechar.

I think I am a big baby. When you are born by c-section you don't realize because you are out in a moment, all naked, and that way you feel quite well. However, when you start wearing clothes and the ones that are supposed to be for your age don't fit, you know there is something that does not match.

Papá me ha dicho que mi peso al nacer (3.7 Kg ó 8 libras y 2 onzas, como dicen aquí en Canadá) no era muy alto pero mi tamaño sí (54 cm ó 21 ¼ pulgadas). Para comparar buscó en Internet el percentil y equivale a un 95% (para bebés de mi sexo y mi raza en Norteamérica). Yo no sé que es un percentil y él me dijo que es como colocar a todas las niñas de mi edad en orden de estatura de más alta a más baja, como en un desfile, y si hubiera 100 niñas, yo estaría la quinta y 95 irían detrás. Yo pensé que eso está bien, porque así puedo ver mejor en el desfile.

Daddy has told me that my weight at birth (3.7 Kg or 8 lb and 2 oz, as they say here in Canada) was not much, but my height was (54 cm or 21 ¼ inches). To check it he searched in the Internet for a percentile table, and it shows that I am 95% (for babies of my gender and race in North America). I don't know what a percentile is and he told me that it is like sorting all girls of my age by height from the tallest to the shortest, like in a parade, and if there were 100 girls, I would be the fifth and 95 would be behind. I thought it was a good thing, because that way I can see the parade better.

Mis papás me tendrán al tanto del percentil según crezco, pero la abuela Chela dice que no tengo que esperar a ser adulta para saber cuál va a ser mi estatura final. Sólo tengo que multiplicar por dos mi altura a los 18 meses (por ser niña, los niños es por dos a los 24 meses) y sale clavadito. A papá, que trabaja en temas de planificación, le interesa saber si eso funciona y se encargará de verificarlo.

My parents will keep me posted on my percentile as I grow up, but Grandma Chela says that I don't have to wait to be an adult to know what my final height will be. I just have to multiply by two my height when I am 18 months old (because I am a girl, for boys it is by 2 at 24 months of age) and I will nail it. Daddy, who works in Forecasting, is intrigued by it and will verify whether it actually works.

Mientras, yo seguiré usando ropa con unos meses de antelación respecto a la etiqueta. Y mamá seguirá guardando la que ya no vale (alguna sin estrenar). Suerte que hay mucha gente que me ha regalado cosas y ya tengo más prendas que mis papás. ¡Gracias a todos por hacerlo posible!

Meanwhile, I will keep using clothes a few months before the label indications. And mommy will continue to store the ones that don't fit any more (some not even worn). I'm lucky that many people have given me lots of things and I already have more garments than my parents. Thanks to all of you who have make it possible!

Cosas que me gustan / Things I like

Hoy ha nevado por primera vez pero no me han dejado salir a jugar con la nieve. Me han dicho que cuando sea más mayor, pero yo ya soy más mayor. Ya he aprendido a sacar la lengua y a hacer ruido para avisar de que quiero algo, aunque bien pensado no sé que podría haber hecho yo con la nieve.

Today it has snowed for the first time but they have not allowed me to go out and play with the snow. I have been told that I have to wait until I am older, but I am already older. I have learned how to stick my tongue and how to make noises to call when I want something, though thinking in twice I don't know what I would have done with the snow.

Ya sé distinguir cosas que me gustan y cosas que no me gustan. Me gusta que me tengan en brazos. No me gusta que me hablen alto. Me gusta el baño caliente. Pero no me gusta cuando el agua está fría.

I already differentiate things that I like and thinks that I don't like. I like to be held. I don't like when people speak loud. I like a warm bath. But I don't like when the water gets cold.

Me gusta comer. No me gusta estar tumbada cuando no estoy durmiendo. Me gusta salir en mi cochecito. No me gusta cuando el gorro me tapa los ojos. Me gusta mi chupete. No me gusta cuando me quitan la ropa. También me gusta mucho la música. Ésta es la primera canción que conocí. Pulsa “play” y escucha mientras te cuento la historia.

I like to eat. I don't like to lie down when I am not sleeping. I like when I go out in my stroller. I don't like when the hat covers my eyes. I like my pacifier. El día que nací me pusieron en brazos de papá y poco después nos dijeron que dejáramos el quirófano. Nos quedamos a la puerta en un pasillo a media luz y pude por fin ver su cara. Él no sabía que hacer y se puso a cantar “The first cut is the deepest”. No sabe bien por qué. Dice que quizá fue el impacto de la cesárea o pensar en el corte del cordón umbilical. El caso es que fue lo primero que se le vino a la cabeza. Ahora me la canta o me la silba y me cuenta que fue compuesta antes incluso de que él naciera pero que se queda con la versión de Sheryl Crow.

The day I was born I was placed in daddy's arms and a little later we were asked to leave the operating room. We found ourselves at the door in a dim corridor and finally I could see his face. he did not know what to do and started to sing "The first cut is the deepest". He does not know well why. He says it may have been the C-section impact or the cut of the umbilical cord. The fact is that it was the first thing that came to his mind. Now he sings and whistles it to me and tells me that it was composed even before he was born but Sheryl Crow's version is the one that he likes the most.

También me canta muchas otras canciones, en español y en inglés, y tanto mamá como papá  me ponen canciones en Youtube y en la iPod. Además el abuelo Javier me ha mandado discos de música clásica, que es bonita de otra manera. Me gustan casi todas las canciones, pero me cuesta recordarlas porque ¡hay tantas! Papá me ha dicho que ya me enseñará cuando sea mayor. ¡Qué manía con eso! Yo ya soy mayor.

He sings many other songs to me, in Spanish and in English, and both mommy and daddy play songs for me in Youtube and the iPod. Moreover Grandpa Javier has sent me classical music records, which are beautiful in a different way. I like most of the songs, but it is hard to remember them all because there are so many! Daddy has told me that we will help me learn when I am older. What an obsession with that! I am already older.

Mis primeros días en casa / My first days at home

El viernes por la mañana nos dejaron salir del hospital y por fin pude ver con mis propios ojos la casa donde voy a crecer. Después de vivir varios días en unos pocos metros cuadrados ahora todo parece más grande, con escaleras, habitaciones y ventanas que dan luz a diferentes horas del día.

On Friday morning they let us leave the hospital and finally I could see with my own eyes the house where I am going to grow up. After living some days in a few square feet now everything looks larger, with stairs, rooms and windows that bring light at different times of the day.

Hay tantas cosas que son diferentes ahora. Todo está lejos, pero por suerte tengo un cochecito para moverme y un asiento para mí en el coche de mamá. Además en unos sitios hace frío y en otros calor, por lo que tengo que tener prendas y accesorios especiales para salir a la calle. Papá y mamá dicen que aún no he sentido lo que es frío de verdad y lo cierto es que no sé si quiero sentirlo.

There are so many things that are different now. Everything is far away, but fortunately I have a stroller to move around and a car seat for me in mommy's car. Besides, in some places it is cold and in others warm, which means that I need special garments and accessories to get out. Daddy and mommy say that I haven't felt what is true cold and honestly I don't know if I want to feel it.

El sábado hice mi primera excursión. Nos dio tiempo a ir a dos sitios antes de cansarme. No te rías, pero lo primero que he conocido además del hospital y mi casa es Ikea. No me enteré de mucho pero tenía que ayudar a papá y mamá que aún están amueblando la casa. Lo segundo fue Babies R Us, que creo que es más normal, porque necesitaba algunas provisiones. La abuela Chela cuidó de mí en la tienda mientras papá y mamá llenaban el carro.

On Saturday I went on my first excursion. We had time to go to two places before I got tired. Don't laugh, but the first place I have known after the hospital and my house is Ikea. I did not realize much but I had to help daddy and mommy who are still furnishing our home. The second place was Babies R Us, which I think is more normal, because I needed some supplies. Grandma Chela took care of me at the store while daddy and mommy loaded the cart.

Hoy por la mañana me han dicho que tenía que ir al médico y mira la cara que se me ha puesto cuando me he enterado. Luego ha resultado ser una señora muy amable que se ha sorprendido al ver que había ganado un poco de peso en menos de una semana en lugar de perderlo. Ella no sabe cómo como. Luego le he llorado un poco porque al vestirme se me ha caído el chupete (o chupón, según quien lo diga) y con eso no se juega.

This morning I've been told that I had to go and visit the doctor and look at the face that I have pulled when I have found it out. Then it has resulted to be a very kind woman who was surprised to see that I had gained some weight in less than a week as opposed to losing it. She does not know how I eat. Afterwards I have cried at her a bit because I have dropped my pacifier when they were dressing me up, and that is something you don't toy with.

Mi día / My birthday

Según las cuentas de los doctores hace ya unos días que debería haber nacido, pero ¡se estaba tan bien ahí dentro! Si no fuera porque me estaba haciendo grande y mamá ya no podía con la barriga, me habría quedado a pasar el invierno.

According to doctors' calculations I should have been born a few days ago, but it was so cozy in there! If it weren't for my size, which made it difficult for mommy to carry the womb around, I would have stayed for the winter.

El día 15 empezaron a hacerme cosas para convencerme de que saliera. El abuelo Pablo estaba contento porque pensaba que iba a tener el mismo cumpleaños que su perro Pre, pero no era mi día, y ahí seguía yo resistiendo hasta que sacaron las armas de persuasión masiva. Mamá dice que le dolía, pero yo no lo sabía y realmente no quería salir.

On the 15th they started doing things to convince me to come out. Grandpa Pablo was happy because he thought I would have the same birthday as his dog Pre, but it was not my day, and there I was resisting until they brought up the massive persuasion weapons. Mommy says that it hurt, but I did not know it and I really did not want to come out.

En la madrugada del 17 de noviembre la lie porque en medio de la pelea me enredé con el cordón umbilical y de repente ya no se estaba tan bien. Por suerte los médicos se dieron cuenta enseguida, se dejaron de historias y me sacaron por otra parte. A mí no me dolió pero a mamá le hicieron una raja en la tripa y papá tuvo que sujetarme mientras los doctores la curaban.

Early in the morning on November 17th I kicked up a fuss because in the middle of the fight I got tangled with the umbilical cord and all of the sudden it was not cozy any more. Fortunately the doctors realized right away, they cut to the chase, and brought me out using a different exit. It did not hurt me but they slashed mommy's tummy and daddy had to hold me while the doctors healed her up.

Aunque no quería salir, una vez fuera tengo que decir que no se está mal aquí. Lo único que me molesta es que hay mucha luz y no puedo ver bien, pero estoy conociendo gente y hago cosas nuevas, como comer o bañarme, y además puedo estirar las piernas.

Though I did not want to come out, once outside I have to say that it is not that bad. The only thing that bothers me is that it is too bright and I cannot see well, but I am meeting people and I do new things, like eating or taking baths, and I can even stretch my legs.

Como mamá tiene la herida en la tripa tenemos que quedarnos unos días en el hospital. Me han sacado unas fotos y como decía mamá cuando veía las ecografías, esa nariz y esa boca se parecen a las de alguien: ¿tú que piensas?

Because mommy has a wound in her tummy we have to stay a few days in the hospital. They have taken some pictures of me, and as mommy said when she saw the ultrasounds, that nose and that mouth resemble someone else's: what do you think?
