Cambios de paisaje / Changes of scenery

Este verano ha sido distinto en muchos sentidos. Era el periodo de transición entre el Busy Bee y la escuela para niños mayores y me da la sensación de que se ha acabado en un suspiro.

This summer has been different in many ways. It was the transition period between Busy Bee and the big school and I have the impression that it has gone by in a heartbeat.

Mamá había diseñado un plan para que fuera a tres campamentos de verano distintos: uno al aire libre, uno deportivo, y otro más didáctico. Duraban sólo una o dos semanas y cada vez iba a un sitio distinto, con nuevos compañeros y rutinas diferentes. Eso era lo que quería mamá: que hiciera cosas distintas y probara otros sitios antes de dar el gran salto.

Mommy had designed a plan for me to go to three different summer camps: one outdoorsy, one sporty, and one more school like. Each of them only lasted one or two weeks and they were hosted in different places, with new friends and routines. That is what mommy wanted: me to do different things in new places before the big jump.

La abuela Chela y Óscar llegaron en mitad del experimento, con el objetivo principal de estar en los Juegos Panamericanos, que son unas competiciones deportivas a medio camino entre los Juegos Olímpicos y los campeonatos del barrio. La verdad es que era difícil darse cuenta de que estaban teniendo lugar, porque aparte de las señales y el lío de tráfico no se veían por ningún lado. Óscar estaba interesado en el baloncesto y él sí que estuvo más enchufado.

Grandma Chela and Oscar arrived halfway through the experiment, with the main goal of attending the Pan-American Games, which are a series of sport competitions in between the Olympic Games and a neighbourhood league. The truth is that it was difficult to realize that they were taking place, because other than the signage and the traffic mess, you could not see any of them around.  Oscar was interested in the basketball competition and was more plugged-in than any of us.

Pero aparte de los juegos, tuvieron tiempo para hacer turismo y pasar tiempo con nosotros. Nos llevaron a Diego y a mí al acuario, al parque, y nos hicimos varias excursiones todos juntos.

But aside from the games, they also had time for tourist visits and to spend time with us. They took Diego and me to the Aquarium, to the park, and we made a couple of day trips all together.

Y antes incluso de acabar el campamento de verano, para seguir con la sensación de celeridad, viajamos a España. Fue distinto a otras veces, porque no fuimos a Aranjuez, sino al pueblo del abuelo Pablo en las montañas, lo cual fue una experiencia muy diferente.

And even before the summer camps were over, to carry on with the sense of celerity, we traveled to Spain. It was unlike previous trips, because we did not go to Aranjuez, but to Grandpa Pablo’s town in the mountains, which was a very different experience.

Para empezar los primos estaban allí y tenía más gente con quien jugar. La casa es grande y todos podíamos estar en ella sin agobiarnos. Y si queríamos salir a la calle, está ahí mismo y se pueden jugar a muchas cosas sin el peligro de los coches.

First the cousins were there and I had more people to play with. The house is big and we all could be in it comfortably. And if we wanted to go out, the street is right there and you can play without the dangers of traffic.

Y aunque a veces íbamos a los columpios, no hacía falta ir muy lejos para quemar energías, ya que el abuelo tenía un castillo inflable en el garaje. Lo único malo del pueblo era que todo está en cuesta y a todos los sitios íbamos andando, por lo que temía el momento en que mamá decía que fuéramos a dar un paseo.

And even though we went to the playground, we did not have to go far to burn energy, as grandpa had a jumping castle in the garage. The only downside in the town was that everything in on a slope and we walked to go everywhere, which made me fear every time mommy wanted to go for a walk.

Pero no sólo estuvimos en el pueblo. La primera semana el abuelo nos dejó su coche y nos fuimos de viaje a visitar a primos y tíos. Lo mejor de todo fueron los días que pasamos en Asturias con la tía Mari Paz y al tío Esteban. Fuimos a la playa, vimos olas enormes, y comimos cosas buenas.

But we not only were in grandpa’s town. The first week he lent us his car and we went to visit uncles, aunts, and cousins. The best part was when we were in Asturias with Aunt Mari Paz and Uncle Esteban. We went to the beach, saw gigantic waves, and ate yummy food.

También hicimos turismo. Un día fuimos a Salamanca, que es un sitio donde hay una rana escondida en una pared y tienes que encontrarla. Nos encontramos con un amigo de papá y su familia, y nos compraron unas ranas que croaban para ayudar a localizar a la que estaba escondida.

We also went sightseeing. One day we visited Salamanca, which is a place where there is a frog hiding on a wall and you have to find it. We met a friend of daddy’s and his family, and they bought us croaking frogs to help us find the one that was hiding.

Papá y mamá hicieron otros viajes y mientras Diego y yo nos quedamos con Pre y con los abuelos. A veces cuando Diego echaba la siesta el abuelo Pablo y yo íbamos a dar una vuelta y hablábamos de muchas cosas. Pre no estaba tan activo como otras veces y le costaba mucho caminar, pero le gustaba estar con nosotros. El abuelo dice que ya es mayor pero que no me preocupe, que pronto volverá a ser un cachorro juguetón. 

Daddy and mommy went on other trips while Diego and I stayed with Pre, grandma, and grandpa. Some days while Diego was taking a nap, Grandpa Pablo and I went for a walk and talked about many things. Pre was not as active as he used to be and he barely could walk, but he liked coming with us. Grandpa says that he is old but that I should not worry because he will soon be a playful puppy again.

El verano es época de cumpleaños en casa. Mientras estábamos en España le preparamos una sorpresa a mamá, que estaba un poco triste porque decía que 40 años son muchos. Cuando volvimos a Toronto fue mamá quien le preparó una tarta sorpresa a papá y Diego y yo la acompañamos con globos y parafernalia de cumpleaños.

Summer is birthday time at home. While we were in Spain we organized a surprise for mommy, who was a bit sad because she felt old turning 40. When we returned to Toronto it was mommy who prepared a surprise cake for daddy, and Diego and I added balloons and birthday paraphernalia.

Después papá nos llevó a una isla que hay cerca del centro de Toronto. Fue una forma bonita de acabar un ajetreado verano: viaje en coche, paseo por la ciudad, traslado en barco, recorrido en bicicleta, visita a los animales de la isla, y una bonita vista de la ciudad a la vuelta. 

Afterwards daddy took us to an island close to Toronto downtown. It was a nice way to finish a busy summer: car trip, stroll by downtown, boat trip, bicycle ride, visit to the animal farm, and a beautiful sight of the city on our way back.

El hada de los dientes / The tooth fairy

A veces se te cae un diente y a veces te lo quitan. A mí me han pasado las dos cosas. Andaban los dos un poco sueltos y un día, de repente, cuando me preparaba para ir al Busy Bee, se cayó uno. Yo ya lo estaba esperando, porque había visto a algunas amigas pasar por ello, y aunque papá y mamá estaban un poco tristes yo me puse contenta.

Sometimes a tooth can fall out; sometimes it can be taken away. In a couple of days I have experienced both. They were a bit wiggly and suddenly one day, when I was getting ready to go to Busy Bee one fell out. I was expecting it, because I had seen some friends going through it, and even though Daddy and Mommy were sad, I was actually happy.

Ese día me visitó el hada de los dientes, que como dice un amigo de papá tiene un nombre con caché no como el ratoncito Pérez, que parece más bien interino. Me dejó un diploma de felicitación y un juguete de regalo.

That day I received the visit of the tooth fairy, who as a friend of Daddy’s says has a solid name, not like Little Mouse Perez, who sounds more like a temp worker. She left me a congratulatory diploma and a game as a present.

Un par de días después Diego tiró del otro diente que se movía y esta vez me dolió, porque Diego es un poco bruto, pero se me pasó enseguida y por la noche el hada de los dientes me dejó un huevo de chocolate. Por suerte los dientes nuevos han salido rápido y aún puedo sonreír sin miedo para las fotos.

A couple of days later Diego pulled the other wiggly tooth out and this time it hurt, because Diego can be rough, but the pain went away soon and that night the tooth fairy left a chocolate egg for me. Fortunately the new teeth have grown quickly and I can smile confidently for the photos.

Antes del drama dental estuvimos de vacaciones en la playa. Fuimos a Cayo Coco, una playa muy bonita en Cuba, que es una isla en el Caribe donde todo parece un poco antiguo. Papá y mamá dicen que era un buen momento para ir porque pronto se va a llenar de americanos.

Before the dental drama we went on a vacation to the beach. We went to Cayo Coco, which is a beautiful beach in Cuba, which is a Caribbean Island where everything looks old. Daddy and mommy say that it was a good time to go because it will be full of Americans soon.

Allí nos encontramos con la abuela Chela, la tía Mónica y el tío Javier, que vinieron desde Perú. Nos lo pasamos muy bien, yendo por el día a la playa y por las noches viendo los espectáculos musicales. También les enseñé a jugar al Crazy Eight y cuando podía organizaba unas manos.

There we met with Grandma Chela, Aunt Monica and Uncle Javier, who joined us from Peru. We had a great time, going to the beach at daytime and to the musical shows at night. I also taught them how to play Crazy Eight, and whenever possible I organized a few hands.

Había llegado de Canadá con un poco de tos y allí se me puso peor. Papá intento ayudar con el medicamento de Diego pero acabé con una reacción alérgica. Fue un poco fastidio, pero me lo pasé bien yendo al médico y no me impidió disfrutar de la playa, aunque tuve que andar con una gorra todo el tiempo.

I had arrived from Canada with some cough that did not go away and actually got worse while we were there. Daddy tried to help using Diego’s medicine but I ended having an allergic reaction. It was a bit bothering, but I had a good time going to the doctor and I could still enjoy the beach, even though I had to wear a hat all the time.

Flat Stanley también se vino con nosotros, como cuando fuimos a Japón. Un día le llevamos de excursión. Papá dijo que teníamos que descansar de playa para que me curara un poco y contratamos un coche que conducía un señor al que llamaban “láminas”, porque era delgado. Era muy simpático y nos llevó a ver cocodrilos y a conocer varios sitios de una ciudad que se llamaba Morón.

Flat Stanley also came with us, like last year when we went to Japan. One day we took him on trip. Daddy said that we had to take a break from the beach so that I could get better and we rented a car driven by a man called “laminates”, because he was so skinny. He was friendly and he took us to see crocodiles and to get to know different places in a town named Moron, really. 

Al volver a Toronto empecé unas clases de natación en un sito nuevo. Esta vez mamá dijo que tenía que aprender a nadar de verdad y me da que lo ha conseguido. Félix te exige bastante y te obliga a saltar y a meter la cabeza debajo del agua, pero para el final de la primavera ya era capaz de avanzar varios metros sin el gusano flotante.

When we came back to Toronto I started swimming lessons in a new place. This time Mommy said that I had to learn how to swim for real and I think she has achieved her goal. Felix is quite demanding and he asks us to dive and to put the head under the water, but at the end of the spring I was able to move forward several metres without the floating noodle.

Y mientras tanto los días se empezaron a hacer más largos y pudimos hacer más cosas por las tardes y los fines de semana, como ir al parque en bicicleta, especialmente ahora que ya sé pedalear yo sola, la excursión a la granja, o la visita  al zoo. La última vez papá me dejó trazar en un mapa el recorrido que quería hacer y lo pasamos en grande viendo los animales mientras íbamos marcándolo en el mapa.

And meanwhile the days started to be longer and we could do more things in the evenings and during the weekends, like going to the park by bicycle, now that I know how to pedal by myself, going on a trip to the farm, or visiting the zoo. The last time we went Daddy let me draw a map with the itinerary I wanted to follow and we had a great time visiting the animals while we were checking out the map.

Sin darme cuenta llegamos al final del curso y con ello la graduación en el Busy Bee. No lo había pensado mucho, pero poco a poco me di cuenta de que sería la última, ya que al año que viene iré a otro colegio. Me dio pena. Por un lado ya sé que es momento de empezar una nueva etapa, pero por otro sé que voy a echar de menos a mis amigos, a mis profesores y las locuras apícolas de Ms. Connie.

Without realizing we got to the end of the school and with the Busy Bee graduation arrived. I had not thought about it much, but little by little I realized that it would be the last one, given that next year I’ll go to a new school. It made me sad. On one hand I know it’s time to start a new phase, but on the other I know I am going to miss my friends, my teachers and the Ms. Connie’s crazy bee things.

El día de la graduación era el cumpleaños de Diego. Papá y mamá se cogieron el día libre y al terminar nos fuimos a Niagara Falls. Pasamos un par de días en un parque acuático, y aunque algunas atracciones daban un poco de miedo nos los pasamos bien. También nos dio tiempo para ir a ver las cataratas y jugar en un parque. Me gusta que mi hermano pequeño se haga un poco más mayor.

The day of the graduation was also Diego’s birthday. Daddy and Mommy took the day off and when it finished we went to Niagara Falls. We spent a couple of days at a water park, and even though some attractions were a bit scary we had a great time. We also had time to see the falls and to play in a park. I like that my little brother is growing a little older.

Ocho Loco / Crazy Eight

Esta vez celebramos la Navidad en casa después de haber viajado a Perú y España en años anteriores. Yo ya ni me acordaba de que teníamos un árbol de navidad tan chulo. Papá lo sacó del garaje y mamá lo decoró. Además compró uno pequeño para que yo pudiera poner mis adornos.

This time we have celebrated Christmas at home after having traveled to Peru and Spain the last couple of years. I did not even remember that we had a Christmas tree so cool. Daddy took it out of the garage and mommy decorated it. Besides she bought a small one for me to hang my ornaments.

Papá Noel nos trajo un montón de regalos, aunque me da a mí que no eran suyos, porque mamá me decía luego cuáles eran suyos, cuáles de abuela, cuáles de los tíos, … Así que por lo que parece, ellos los compran y Papá Noel los reparte.

Santa brought a lot of presents, although I don’t think they were his, because mommy told me later which one were hers, which ones from Grandma, which ones from uncles and aunts, … Apparently, they buy them and then Santa does the delivery.

Yo había pedido un robot, y lo más parecido que encontraron papá y mamá fue un Furby. Lo llamamos Weydo y durante dos días no me separé de él. Pero un día lo zarandeó Diego y Weydo se enfadó. Empezó a eructar, le cambió la voz y decía barbaridades. Me pegó tal susto que ya no quería ni verlo.

I had asked for a robot, and the most similar thing that daddy and mommy found was a Furby. We called him Weydo and during two days I was with him all the time. But one day Diego shook him and Weydo went mad. He started to burp, his voice changed and he said nonsenses. He upset me so much that I did not want to see him again.

Mamá consiguió apaciguarlo, dándole mucho cariño y alimentándolo con comidas sanas con la iPad, pero la verdad es que me da un poco de respeto y, aunque a veces lo despertamos para jugar, le dejamos que duerma casi todo el día.

Mommy was able to calm him down, with lots of care and feeding him healthy food with the iPad, but the truth is that it scares me a bit and, even though we wake him up to play from time to time, we let him sleep most of the time.

Justo después de Navidad llegó a pasar unos días el abuelo Javier. Nos lo pasamos bien jugando juntos, ahora que teníamos nuevos juguetes, y nos hicimos algunas excursiones, aprovechando que no hacía mucho frío.

Just after Christmas Grandpa Javier came to spend a few days with us. We had a good time playing together, now that we had new toys, and we made a couple of excursions, taking advantage of the not-so-cold weather.

Una vez que Weydo se instaló en la estantería mi regalo de Navidad preferido pasó a ser un juego de cartas que me había comprado la tía Sonia con el que aprendí a jugar Crazy Eight (Ocho Loco).

Once Weydo settled on the shelf a cards game called Crazy Eight that Aunty Sonia had brought me became my favourite Christmas present.

Al principio jugaba sólo de vez en cuando, pero una vez que le cogí el truco, organizaba partidas todas las noches y papá, mamá y yo jugábamos unas  manos, y yo casi siempre ganaba.

In the beginning I played only from time to time, but once I got the hang of it, I set up games every night and daddy, mommy and I played a couple of hands, which I won most of the times.

Como me gusta jugar a las cartas papá me ha enseñado dos juegos más: el cinquillo, y la carta más alta, y ahora alternamos qué juego jugamos. También papá me ha enseñado a jugar con la baraja española, que no tiene ochos y nueves, pero tiene sota, caballo, y rey. Por ejemplo, ya sé jugar un solitario, que es un juego de sumar ocho, que puedes jugar tu solo mientras papá y mamá terminan de recoger.

Because I like to play cards daddy has taught me two more games: el cinquillo (little five) and top it, and now we alternate the game we play. Daddy has also showed me how to play with the Spanish deck, which does not have eights or nines, but has knaves, knights and kings. For example, I know how to play a game of solitaire, where you have to add to eight, and you can play by yourself while daddy and mommy finish tidying up.

Todos estos juegos han venido muy bien porque el invierno ha sido largo y frío. Casi todo el tiempo lo hemos pasado adentro, jugando al tenis o a las cartas, aunque nos hemos hecho alguna que otra expedición de reconocimiento a la nieve.

All these games have come handy because the winter has been long and cold. We have spent most of the time indoors, playing tennis or cards, even though we have had a couple of opportunities to make a trip to test the snow.

Un día también fuimos al acuario, que es como la pecera del Busy Bee pero en grande, y lo pasamos fenomenal aprendiendo sobre peces y otras especies marinas mientras jugábamos. En este sitio por ejemplo se podía meter la cabeza dentro de la pecera, pero sin mojarse.

One day we also went to the aquarium, which is like the fish tank at Busy Bee but larger, and we had a great time learning about fish and other sea animals while we played. In this place for instance you could put your head inside the tank without getting wet.

Necesito un poco de privacidad / I need some privacy

Desde el momento que supe que íbamos a viajar a Perú en otoño me dije a mí misma que no me pasaría otra vez lo que me ocurrió en el último viaje a España. Durante semanas los dibujos animados que veía eran en español, los libros que leía (o me leían mejor dicho) en español, hablaba con papá y mamá en español (con Diego no hacía falta porque no se entera aún muy bien).

Since the moment I found out we were going to Peru in the fall I made up my mind to prevent the experience I had in our last trip to Spain. During weeks the cartoons I watched were in Spanish, the books I read (or better said I was read to) were in Spanish, I talked to daddy and mommy in Spanish (with Diego it was not required because he does not noticed the difference).

El esfuerzo dio sus frutos y cuando llegamos allí pude manejarme bien con mis primos, tíos y abuelos. He aquí un ejemplo de cómo le explicaba a la abuela el concepto de casa semi-adosada.

The effort paid off and when we arrived I could manage quite well with my cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents. Here you have an example of how I explained Grandma the concept of semi-detached home.

Fue un viaje largo, como siempre, aunque esta vez un poco más, porque fuimos en avión a Lima y casi del tirón seguimos trayecto hasta Trujillo en el coche que nos había dejado el tío Javier. Nos llevamos a la tía Mónica que nos estaba esperando. Y por el medio me pareció ver al abuelo Javier en el aeropuerto, pero a lo mejor fue un sueño, porque llegamos tarde en la noche y luego ya no estaba.

It was a long trip, like always, but this time a bit longer, because we took a flight to Lima and without stopping much we drove to Trujillo in the car we have borrowed from Uncle Javier. We took Auntie Monica with us. Somewhere in the middle I think I saw Grandpa Javier at the airport, but it might have been a dream, given that we arrived late at night and he was not there soon after.

Por el camino a Trujillo había obras en la carretera. Nos pararon unos obreros con trajes de protección biológica y por unos momentos pensamos que habíamos quedado aislados en cuarentena por ébola. Por suerte era sólo que hacía mucho viento y fue una oportunidad de dar buen uso a esos trajes.

On our way to Trujillo we ran into construction on the road. We were stopped by two workers with biological protective suits and for a few minutes we thought we were quarantined due to ebola. Fortunately it was just that it was windy and it was a good chance to use those suits.  

La abuela Chela nos estaba esperando en Trujillo para jugar. Nos había comprado juguetes y sacó la piscina inflable, que ha prestado sus servicios a lo largo de los años.

Grandma Chela was waiting for us in Trujillo to play. She had bought toys and broke out the inflatable pool, which has been quite useful over the years.

Diego y yo lo pasamos en grande con la abuela, primero en Trujillo, jugando en casa o en el Country Club, y luego en Lima, en casa de la tía Maritza, en el parque o en la piscina de bolas del Pardo’s Chicken, mientras papá y mamá andaban ocupados disfrazándose para ir a unas bodas.

Diego and I had a great time playing with Grandma, first in Trujillo, playing at home or at the Country Club, and later in Lima, at Aunt Maritza’s, at the park, or in the ball pool at Pardo’s Chicken, while daddy and mommy were busy dressing up to go to weddings.

Nos encontramos con los primos en varios sitios (yo creo que se movían por lo de las bodas) y lo pasamos bien jugando juntos. Todos los de mi generación son niñas, así que Diego estaba un poco descolocado.

We met our cousins in several places (I think they moved with the weddings) and we had fun playing together. In my generation all of them are girls, which means that Diego was a bit out of place.

Este otoño he retomado las clases de tenis. Íbamos los domingos por la mañana, Diego, papá y yo. Primero era la clase de fútbol de Diego, en la que yo ayudaba con los ejercicios, y luego la de tenis. Este año ya juego mejor, pero el revés se me atraganta un poco porque me perdí la parte teórica cuando fuimos a Perú.

This fall I had returned to tennis lessons. We went on Sunday mornings, Diego, daddy and I. First we had Diego’s soccer class, where I helped with the exercises, and then I want to tennis. I can play better now, but I have some trouble with the backhand because I missed the theory when we went to Peru.

Hace poco fue mi quinto cumpleaños. Un hito importante, porque marca el momento en que usas todos los dedos de una mano para contar los años que tienes (a no ser que tengas seis, pero creo que eso es raro).

A few weeks I ago I celebrated my fifth birthday. It is an important milestone, as it marks the moment where you use all the fingers in one hand to show how old you are (unless you have six fingers, which I think is unusual).

Mamá organizó una fiesta con mis amigos, bueno amigas, del Busy Bee, y también vino Anthony. Primero hicimos manualidades con botones, luego nos comimos una merienda, que incluía la súper-tarta, y cantamos y jugamos hasta que llegaron los padres a recoger a mis amigas.

Mommy organized a party with my friends, well girlfriends, from Busy Bee, and Anthony also came. First we did crafts with buttons, then we ate a snack, which included a super cake, and then we sang and played until my friends parents came to pick them up.

Como soy más mayor ya ayudo en casa con muchas cosas. Me gusta ayudar a poner la mesa y hacer la cena, especialmente si toca jamón, chorizo y queso. También ayudo a papá cuando arregla cosas, como el día que instaló la nueva cama de Diego. A veces es un poco aburrido, pero siempre queda la satisfacción de contemplar el trabajo terminado.

Because I’m older I help at home more and more. I like to help set the table and prepare dinner, especially if we are having ham, chorizo and cheese. I also help when daddy fixes things, like the day he assembled Diego’s new bed. Sometimes it is a bit boring, but there is always the satisfaction of looking at the work well done.

Diego y yo compartimos habitación, lo que hace el momento de ir a la cama más divertido. Además me gusta saber que está ahí por la noche y que no estoy sola, aunque esté oscuro. Otras veces, sin embargo, tengo que marcar distancias, como cuando le da una pataleta de los “terribles dos” y le digo que con esa actitud “you are hurting my ears” (me haces daño en los oídos) o cuando voy al baño y se viene detrás, le tengo que recordar que hay momentos en los que “I need some privacy” (necesito un poco de privacidad).

Diego and I share the bedroom, which makes bedtime more fun. Besides I like to know that he is there at night and that I’m not by myself, even if it is dark. Other times, however, I have to keep some distance, like when he has a terrible-two tantrum and I tell him that with that attitude he is hurting my ears, or when he comes after me in my way to the toilet and I have to remind him that there are times when I need some privacy.

Soy una promesa / I am a promise

Este año esperaba la graduación del Busy Bee con más anticipación que en el pasado porque ya soy senior. Como somos mayores nos dan un papel más elaborado y tomamos control del escenario por un  buen rato. Nos aprendimos cuatro canciones distintas y cantamos a grito pelado. Esta es “soy una promesa” en la que yo tenía el papel de “potencialidad”.

This year I was looking forward to Busy Bee’s graduation with more eagerness than in previous years because I am a senior. Because we are older we have a more prominent role in the celebration and we take over the stage. We had to learn four songs and we sang them at the top of our lungs. This one is “I am a promise” where I performed as “potentiality”.

También era especial porque era la primera vez que Diego participaba conmigo y compartimos amigos y juegos cuando terminó la ceremonia.

It was also special because it was the first time that Diego took part of it with me and we shared friends and games when the ceremony was over.

Se da la circunstancia de que el cumpleaños de Diego siempre coincide con el final del colegio, así que pasamos de la celebración de la graduación a la del cumpleaños sin respiro. Invitamos a Claudia y a Luca y lo pasamos en grande jugando todos juntos.

It happens that Diego’s birthday always takes place at the end of the school year, and we went from the graduation to the birthday celebration without a break. We invited Claudia and Luca and we had a great time playing together.

La abuela Chela vino de Perú para pasar un par de semanas con nosotros y se apuntó a la graduación y al cumpleaños de Diego. Jugamos a muchas cosas con ella, en el porche, en el jardín, en los columpios o de paseo por la calle.

Grandma Chela came from Peru to spend a couple of weeks with us and she arrived just in time for the graduation and Diego’s birthday. We played games with her, on the porch, in the backyard, at the playground or walking on the street.

Uno de mis momentos preferidos era cuando la abuela me grababa en vídeo y yo actuaba. Les preparaba las sillas a ella y a Diego y el porche era mi escenario.

One of my favourite moments was when Grandma Chela taped a video while I performed. I set up the chairs for her and Diego and the porch became a stage.

Luego la abuela se fue y me dio pena, porque jugaba con nosotros un montón. Mamá me dijo que no me preocupara porque enseguida iba a llegar la tía Mónica y también podría jugar con ella, pero había una notable diferencia.

Later Grandma left and I was sad, because she played with us a lot. Mommy told me not to worry because Auntie Monica was coming right away and I could play with her as well, but she was a noticeable downgrade.

Otra de las novedades de este verano ha sido la logística para salir de paseo. A Diego le regalaron un triciclo por su cumpleaños, lo que despertó mi interés por la bicicleta, que hasta ahora sólo había sido útil para las arañas.

One of this summer’s novelties has been the strolling logistics. Diego received a tricycle for his birthday, which stirred my interest for the bicycle, which had only been of use for spiders until then.

Después de cogerle el truco a los pedales con el triciclo, tuvimos que comprar una bomba y papá le infló las ruedas a la bicicleta porque no había quien la moviera. A partir de entonces siempre íbamos a los columpios en nuestros vehículos.

After I figured out how pedal with the tricycle, we had to buy a pump so that daddy could inflate the tyres, because it was impossible to move the bicycle the way it was before. From then on we always went to the park on our vehicles.

Y así hemos pasado el resto del verano, entre el campamento del Busy Bee, los columpios, los parques y algún viaje a la playa del lago. Pero lo que más me ha gustado de todo es que Diego ha crecido y ahora es mi mejor compañero de juegos y le quiero todavía más.

And that is how we have spent the rest of the summer, between summer camp at Busy Bee, playgrounds, parks and a couple of trips to the beach on the lake. But what I like the most is that Diego has grown up and now he is my best playing partner and I love him even more.

Déjalo ir / Let it go

Este ha sido el año de Frozen, más allá de la tormenta de hielo y el gélido invierno. En el Busy Bee había oído la canción y convencí a mamá de que comprara el DVD de la película. Ya he perdido la cuenta de las veces que la he visto, pero aún me emociono con ella, y cuando oigo la canción “Let it go” se me olvida lo que estoy haciendo.

This has been the year of Frozen, well beyond the ice storm and the cold winter. I had already heard the song at Busy Bee and I convinced mommy to buy the movie’s DVD. I had lost track of how many times I’ve watched it, but I still get goose bumps with it, and when I hear the song “Let it go” I forget what I am doing.

Todos en casa saben de qué hablo cuando me refiero a Olaf y ya hemos discutido por qué me gusta más Elsa que Anna. También se saben la canción, Diego incluido, aunque para papá suena más como ésta.

Everyone at home knows who Olaf is when I bring up his name and we have already discussed why I like Elsa more than Anna. They also know the song, including Diego, though daddy thinks it sounds more like this one.

Este año tuvimos unas vacaciones de primavera especiales, porque nos fuimos a Japón. No tuvimos mucho tiempo para pensarlo, y como yo sólo había hablado de ello en español, confundí a todos en el Busy Bee, que pensaron que me iba de viaje para pasarlo bien (to have fun). Al final papá lo aclaró el día que nos íbamos y Mrs. Maria me dijo que nos lleváramos a Flat Stanley con nosotros.

This year we had a special spring vacation trip, as we went to Japan. We did not have much time to think about it and, because I had only talked about it in Spanish (Japón [ha-pon’]), I confused everyone at Busy Bee who thought I was going on a trip to have fun. In the end daddy’s clarified it the day he picked me up to leave and Mrs. Maria told me to take Flat Stanley with us.

Lo cierto es que al final se puede decir que fuimos a Japón a pasarlo bien. Hacía mucho que no veía a los primos así que no me podía hacer a la idea de cómo sería, pero una vez reunidos no nos costó mucho tiempo encontrar cosas que hacer juntos. Lo pasamos bien tirándonos por un tobogán gigante, corriendo por los jardines del palacio imperial, comiendo juntos, o montando en el metro.

The fact is that we can say that we went to Japan to have fun. It had been a long time since I had seen my cousins and I did not know how things would turn out, but once we met it did not take us much to find things we could do together. We had a great time going down a giant slide, running around the imperial palace gardens, eating together, or riding the subway.

Hicimos muchas visitas turísticas porque Japón tiene una cultura milenaria y montones de sitios bonitos que ver. Aunque muchas cosas eran dignas de observación: el metro, un restaurante, la habitación del hotel, o los accesorios de un retrete, los sitios más llamativos los encontramos en Kioto.

We made a lot of touristic visits because Japan has a millenary culture and plenty of beautiful places to see. Even though many things were worth watching: the subway, a restaurant, the hotel room, or the toilet accessories; we found the most impressive sights in Kyoto.

Mamá se cogió un resfriado los primeros días y nos tuvimos que dosificar, pero aun así nos dio tiempo a hacer muchas cosas, incluso recoger bajo la lluvia una piedra sagrada de recuerdo el día que volvíamos a Tokio.

Mommy caught a cold during our first days in Japan and though we had to pace ourselves, we had time to do many things, even picking up under the rain a sacred pebble as souvenir the day we were returning to Tokyo.

Los últimos días se pasaron deprisa y al final me dio mucha pena tener que irme. Les dije a los primos que se pasaran por nuestra casa el fin de semana siguiente, pero me da que no les queda muy a mano.

The last days flew by and at the end of the trip I was very sad we had to leave. I told my cousins that they could drop by our house the following weekend, but I have the impression they are not that close.

Cuando volvimos a Toronto aún el tiempo era de invierno y tuvimos tiempo para Frozen, en el sentido amplio de la palabra. Además mamá nos subscribió a Netflix, y esto ha supuesto más variedad en mis gustos por los dibujos. Los ponis han pasado a mejor vida, y disfruto viendo diferentes cosas cada semana.

When we got back to Toronto the weather was still winter like and we had time for Frozen, in a broad sense of the word. Besides, mommy subscribed us to Netflix, which has translated into more cartoon variety. The ponies have moved on and now I enjoy watching different things every week.

También me apunté a clases de natación. Ya voy yo sola (sin que mamá tenga que estar conmigo) y se me da muy bien nadar. Papá dice que ya me quiere ver cuando vaya donde cubre, pero yo no veo el problema porque la piscina a la que voy no cubre.

I also signed up for swimming lessons. I can go by myself now (mommy does not have to be with me in the pool) and I can swim very well. Daddy says that he wants to see me when I go to the deep end of the pool, but I don’t see the problem because the pool we go to is shallow.

Cuando por fin llegó el buen tiempo empezamos a disfrutar más de salir a la calle a jugar. Ahora podemos ir a los columpios y nos hemos hecho una excursión al zoo y otra a la granja.

When the weather finally improved we started to enjoy playing outdoors. Now we can go to the playground and have spent a day at the zoo and another one at a farm.

Uno de los momentos más divertidos del día es cuando jugamos a hacer pompas en el porche. Diego no las hace soplando, sino sacudiendo el brazo, y papá nos ha enseñado a hacer pompas gigantes. Cuando hace una, Diego y yo nos vamos detrás de ellas para explotarla y papá nos dice: “no, no, let it go (dejadla ir)”… y es que todo se pega.  

One of the best times of the day is when we play to blow bubbles at the porch. Diego does not actually blow, but makes them by swinging his arm, and daddy has taught us to blow gigantic bubbles. When he makes one Diego and I run to pop it and he says: “no, no, let it go” … which clearly proves that the song has stuck in his head.

Chocolate caliente / Hot chocolate

Este año pasamos las vacaciones de Navidad en España. No son unas navidades como las de Canadá (hay luces de colores y hace frío pero no en la misma escala) ni como las de Perú (hay árboles de Navidad y regalos, pero no está para ir a la playa). Lo que hay por encima de todo: ¡dulces!

This year we spent Christmas in Spain. They are not Christmas like in Canada (there is colourful lighting and it’s cold but not at the same level) neither like those in Peru (there are Christmas trees and presents, but not in beach weather). What there is above any other thing: sweet treats!  

Lo primero que tuvimos que hacer al llegar fue comprar ropa, porque se extravió la maleta con mis cosas y las de Diego, y no podíamos ir todos los días vestidos igual. Al margen del trastorno, toda oportunidad es buena para comprar ropa.

The first thing we had to do when we arrived was to buy clothes, because the suitcase bringing my stuff and Diego’s went missing, and we could not spend everything wearing the same garments. Aside from the inconvenience, any opportunity is a good one to buy new clothes.

Llegamos diez días antes de Navidad, así que tuvimos tiempo de acomodarnos a la rutina de los abuelos. La parte que a mí más me gustaba era cuando a media mañana el abuelo Pablo decía que era hora del chocolate caliente con churros. No me lo perdía ni un día. Pre también venía, pero el pobre ya no tiene fuerzas como antes y a veces teníamos que parar por el camino para que recobrara el aliento.

We arrived ten days before Christmas, so we had time to adjust to the grandpas’ routine. The part that I liked the most was when mid-morning Grandpa Pablo said that it was time for hot chocolate and churros. I never skipped a day. Pre also came with us, but the poor thing is a bit old and sometimes we had to stop for him to catch his breath.

Hablar en español me costó un poco. Yo pensaba que no sería un problema, pero cuando llegué de repente me pareció muy difícil y no me salía nada. La abuela Nieves se frustraba un poco, porque no nos entendíamos, pero poco a poco me fui soltando y al final las palabras en español empezaron a encontrar el camino. Lo que sí aprendí a decir bien y no se me olvidaba era “chocolate caliente”.

It took me a lot longer than expected to speak in Spanish. I thought it would not be a problem, but when I arrived it felt very difficult all of the sudden and I could not say a word. Grandma Nieves got a bit frustrated, because we did not understand each other, but little by little I started to relax and the words found their way to my mouth. What I learned how to say very well and I did not forget was “chocolate caliente” (hot chocolate).

La prima Katia, que está en España estudiando, se alegró mucho de vernos y quedábamos para pasear e ir a ver sitios. De hecho, se alegró tanto que acabó viniendo con nosotros de viaje cuando nos fuimos a visitar a los tíos y primos de papá en el norte de España.

Cousin Katia, who is in studying in Spain, was very happy to see us and we met often to go out for a walk and visit places. In fact, she was so happy that she ended up coming with us on a trip when we went to visit daddy’s uncles, aunts and cousins in Northern Spain.

Aunque ya hacía varios años desde mi última visita, recordaba vagamente los lugares y las personas. Lo que me tenía confundido era el número de tíos y primos que tengo. Ya sé que no sabía contar hace tres años, pero a mí me da que se han multiplicado desde entonces.

Even though it had been a few years since my last visit, I had a vague memory of places and people. What I was a bit confused about was the number of uncles, aunts, and cousins I have. I know I did not now know how to count three years ago, but I have the impression they have multiplied since.

Después de volver a Aranjuez regresé a la rutina del chocolate caliente con churros y seguimos comiendo dulces hasta que llegó el día de volver a Canadá. Durante un par de semanas habíamos vivido con la ilusión de que estábamos en invierno. La realidad nos esperaba en casa: nieve por todas partes, árboles caídos por la tormenta de hielo, mucho frío, y encima la calefacción de casa se había estropeado.

After returning to Aranjuez I resumed the hot chocolate and churros routine and we continued eating treats until the day to get back to Canada arrived. During a couple of weeks we had lived with the illusion that it was winter. The reality was waiting for us at home: snow everywhere, fallen trees due to the ice storm, cold temperatures, and to top it up, the heating at home did not work.

No fue fácil adaptarse al verdadero invierno, que al igual que el año anterior, se vengó de nosotros por intentar escaparnos unas semanas. Estamos ya en marzo y todo sigue tal y como lo encontramos, eso sí con la calefacción funcionando.

It was not easy to adjust to the real winder, who as it did the previous week, took revenge for trying to escape for a few weeks. It is now March and everything is still the same, but with the heating working, obviously.

A todo esto mi atracción por las princesas empezó a perder fuerza. El abuelo me grababa capítulos de la Princesa Sofía de la televisión en España, pero no sé si fue el desencanto de oírla hablar en español o qué, que poco a poco me apetecía menos verla. Ahora he pasado a la etapa pony (Mi Pequeño Pony) y papá dice que no sabe lo que es peor.

In the midst of all this, my attraction to princesses started to dwindle. Grandpa had recorded Princess Sophia episodes from the Spanish TV, but I don’t know if it was the letdown of listening to her speaking in Spanish or what, but little by little I did not feel like watching the show anymore. Now I have moved to the pony stage (My Little Pony) and daddy says that he does not know what is worse.

En todo caso, y aunque ya no vea los capítulos de la Princesa Sofía aún tengo el disfraz, y me lo pongo a veces para ver Mi Pequeño Pony (me gusta enseñarles mis juguetes) o para jugar a los disfraces, como este día que vino a casa mi amiga Claudia del Busy Bee.

In any case, and even though I don’t see Princess Sophia episodes now, I still have her dress, and I wear it sometimes to watch My Little Pony (I like to show them my toys) or to play costumes, like this day when my friend Claudia from Busy Bee came home.
