Mi primer cumpleaños / My first birthday

Ayer fue mi cumpleaños. No me enteré muy bien de lo que pasaba, pero mamá había comprado globos, y tarta, y un montón de cosas con el número uno. Todavía no sé lo que es el número uno, así que yo hice como si lo supiera y lo pasé bien como todos los días.

Yesterday was my birthday. I did not grasp very well what was going on, but mommy had bought balloons and a cake, and many things with the number one on them. I don’t know what the number one is yet, so I made as though I did and I had fun like any other day.

Por la mañana la tía Sonia había venido a felicitarme y nos fuimos a un sitio donde había un ratón gordo feo que me hacía llorar, aunque al primo Anthony le daba igual. Mira las fotos.

In the morning Aunt Sonia had come to wish me happy birthday and we went to a place where there was an ugly fat mouse that made me cry, though Cousin Anthony did not care. Check out the pics.

Y por la noche cuando llegó papá lo seguimos celebrando. Recibí paquetes con juguetes, un abrigo, unas botas, y además me llegaron regalos de los tíos y los abuelos. No sé, fue toda una sorpresa y puede que algún día piense lo contrario, pero por ahora me gusta esto de cumplir años.

And at night when daddy came back from work we continued celebrating it. I received wrapped boxes with toys, a coat, a pair of boots, and besides I received parcels with gifts from my uncles, aunts and grandparents. I don’t know, it was a great surprise and someday I may think differently, but for now I like having birthdays.

Halloween y la Abuela Chela / Halloween and Grandma Chela

Justo después de volver de España la abuela Chela vino a pasar dos semanas con nosotros, lo que me vino bien para hacer más fácil el cambio después de muchos días recibiendo mimos de tanta gente.

Right after we came back from Spain Grandma Chela arrived to spend two weeks with us, which came handy to make it easier the transition after many days being pampered by so many people.

Fuimos a un montón de sitios, aunque como estaba empezando a hacer frío no podíamos pasar mucho rato en la calle. Nos fuimos a comer, a comprar, a hacer turismo, y también ayudamos a papá a recoger las hojas del jardín, porque a los árboles les dio por tirar las hojas así de repente.

We went to a lot of places, though given that it was starting to get cold we could not spend much time outdoors. We went dinning, shopping and sight-seeing, and we also helped daddy pick up the leaves in the garden, because the trees started to drop the leaves all of the sudden.

Cada vez me gusta más la música. Me encantan los juguetes que tienen música y no me canso de escucharla una y otra vez. La abuela Chela acertó de pleno y me trajo cuatro CDs con canciones que mamá dice que son típicas para los niños de Perú, y nos pasábamos el día escuchándolos.

I like music more and more every day. I love toys that play music and I don’t get tired of listening to it again and again. Grandma Chela hit the mark because she brought four CDs with songs that mommy says are typical for children in Peru, and we spent the entire day listening to them.

Un día fuimos a comprar una calabaza para Halloween. A mí me hacía gracia lo de la calabaza pero no entendía muy bien qué íbamos a hacer con ella. Luego vi a papá haciéndole agujeros con un cuchillo, lo que tampoco entendía muy bien.

One day we went to buy a pumpkin for Halloween. I thought it was funny but I did not understand very well what we would do with a pumpkin. Then I saw daddy carving it out with a knife, but I did not understand it either.

Y entonces, cuando se hizo de noche, papá encendió una vela y la calabaza se reía. Y mamá me puso un vestido y un sombrero, que yo me quitaba todo el rato, hasta que vi que ella también tenía un sombrero y las dos íbamos a juego.

And then, right after dusk, daddy lit a candle and the pumpkin started to laugh. And mommy dressed me with a costume and a hat, which I took off all the time, until I saw that she also had a hat and both our outfits matched.

Y poco después empezó a sonar el timbre y venían niños del barrio vestidos con disfraces y mamá les daba caramelos y chocolates, y mamá era tan generosa que cada vez llegaban más niños, y al final se nos acabaron hasta los bombones de la reserva.

And soon after, the doorbell started to ring and children from the neighbourhood arrived dressed up with costumes and mommy gave them candy and chocolates, and mommy was so generous that more and more children came in, and at the end we even run out of backup chocolates.

Al día siguiente las ardillas se comían la calabaza en el jardín e imagino que en muchas casas había niños comiendo caramelos y bombones. Quizá el año que viene yo también lo haré.

The following day the squirrels ate the pumpkin in the garden and I imagine that in many homes there were children eating candy and chocolates. Maybe next year I’ll do so too.

Mi primer viaje a España / My first trip to Spain

¿Sabes que he estado de vacaciones otra vez? No me puedo quejar, porque este año he conocido un montón de sitios (tengo más viajes en avión que meses), pero es que dice mamá que en cuanto ella empiece a trabajar ya no podremos viajar tanto. Esta vez nos hemos ido a España, la tierra de mi papá.

Do you know that I have been on vacation again? I can't complain, because this year I have gotten to know a bunch of places (I tally more flights than months right now), but mommy says that once she starts working again we won't be able to travel that much. This time we have been to Spain, daddy's motherland.

El viaje fue largo, como cuando fuimos a Perú, pero en España el tiempo era como en Canadá, lo que significa que no cambiamos de hemisferio. Sin embargo pasó algo muy raro: cuando salimos era todavía por la tarde y cuando llegamos era casi por la tarde otra vez, pero del día siguiente ¡y no había pasado tanto tiempo!

The trip was long, like when we went to Peru, but the weather in Spain was like Canada's, which means that we did not change hemispheres. However something weird happened: we left in the evening and when we arrived it was almost evening again, but next day, and it had been a long trip, but not that long! 

Ya me había parecido que pasó algo así cuando fuimos a Portland pero esta vez me di cuenta de lo que pasaba. Cuando viajas de este a oeste las horas son distintas en cada sitio y te haces un lío con las comidas y la hora de dormir. Menos mal que tengo buen apetito y buen dormir y enseguida me acostumbré.

I had noticed something similar when we travelled to Portland but this time I realized what was happening. When you travel eastward and westward the time is different in each place and you get messed up with meal and bed times. Good thing that I'm a good eater and a good sleeper too, and I adjusted right away.

Primero estuvimos en casa de los abuelos Pablo y Nieves, que viven en Aranjuez, cerca de Madrid. Con ellos estaba su perro Pre, que se puso tan contento de vernos que saltaba todo el rato y yo me asusté, porque es un perro muy grande.

First we stayed at Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves' house, which is in Aranjuez, close to Madrid. Their dog Pre lives there too and he was so happy to see us that he was jumping all the time and he scared me, because he is a big dog.

Al final nos hicimos amigos, porque lo que realmente quería era jugar con mis juguetes y estar donde estaba yo. El abuelo se quejaba porque decía que le tiraba del pelo, le gritaba, y le arrancaba las pestañas y los bigotes, pero yo sólo estaba jugando con él.

In the end we became friends, because what he really wanted was to play with my toys and to be where I was. Grandpa complained because he said that I pulled his hair, yelled at him and pulled out his eye lashes and whiskers, but I was just playing with him.

Papá y mamá tenían mucha gente que visitar en Madrid y al principio me llevaban casi siempre con ellos para que yo pudiera conocerlos, pero al final me dejaban más tiempo con los abuelos, y la abuela Nieves aprovechó para ponerme al día con los cinco lobitos.

Daddy and mommy had many people to visit in Madrid and in the beginning they took me with them so that I could get to know them, but at the end they left me some days with my grandparents, and Grandma Nieves took advantage to update me on the five little wolves.

A los pocos días de llegar salimos de viaje hacia el norte, porque la mayoría de la familia de mi papá está al norte de Madrid. Hicimos un tour en el que visitábamos familia y también conocíamos ciudades. Mamá le ha dicho a papá que lo apunte bien, porque ella ya no sabe bien qué ciudad era cuál.

A few days after our arrival we left on a trip to the northern part of Spain, because most of daddy's family lives north of Madrid. We made a tour in which we met family and visited cities. Mommy has told daddy to document it well, because she does not know very well which city was which.

En Valladolid visitamos a la tía Mauri, que se acaba de mudar a vivir allí; en Palencia a Sofía, la amiga de la abuela; y luego fuimos a Laguardia, en la Rioja Alavesa, donde vive la tía Carmen. Allí nos quedamos un par de días, comiendo bien, paseando por los viñedos del tío Miguel Ángel y conociendo algunos sitios del País Vasco, como San Sebastián o Bilbao.

In Valladolid we visited Aunt Mauri, who has just moved to live there; in Palencia we met Sofia, grandma's friend; and then we went to Laguardia, in the Basque part of La Rioja, where Aunt Carmen lives. There we stayed a couple of days, eating very well, strolling across Uncle Miguel Angel's vineyards and getting to know some cities in the Basque Country, such us San Sebastian or Bilbao.

Luego fuimos a Asturias, a visitar a la tía MªPaz y el tío Esteban, pasando un día por Cantabria, para conocer un poquito de la costa y un poquito de la montaña. Mi tía nos dio de comer muy bien, y ahora que como de todo, puedo apreciarlo, y mi tío Esteban estaba muy gracioso sin gafas (dice que es la primera vez que no las usa desde que tiene 10 años … y por poco tiempo).

After that we went to Asturias, to visit Aunt MªPaz and Uncle Estaban, spending one day in Cantabria, to get to know a little bit of its coast and a little bit of its mountains. My aunt prepared yummy meals, which I can appreciate now that I can eat everything, and Uncle Esteban was very funny without glasses (he says that it is the first time since he was 10 that he does not wear them ... and only for a few days).

En Asturias unos días llovía y otros hacía sol, y cuando fuimos a Galicia nos pasó lo mismo. Después de recorrer un montón de kilómetros en poco más de una semana volvimos a pasar por Valladolid, porque la primera vez no vi a toda mi familia.

In Asturias some days it rained and some it was sunny, and when we went to Galicia it happened the same. After many many kilometres in little more than a week we went back to Valladolid, because the first time I could not meet all my family.

Yo no sabía muy bien cuantos eran y cuando empezó a llegar gente éramos un montón. Nos juntamos más de 15 y me ha dicho papá que no he conocido ni a la mitad de mis primos. Fue una pena porque no teníamos mucho tiempo, pero lo pasé muy bien de brazo en brazo y me regalaron muchas cosas.

I did not know well how many they were and when everyone started to arrive we became a big group of people. We were more than 15 and daddy has told me that I have not even met half of my cousins. It was unfortunate that we did not have more time, but I had a lot of fun in everyone's arms and they all had gifts for me. 

De vuelta en Aranjuez volví a jugar con Pre. Papá y mamá viajaban a Madrid muchos días, pero yo me quedaba con los abuelos, que aprovechaban para llevarme a visitar a sus amigos y conocer el pueblo. La abuela Nieves me acabó comprando una muñeca que canta los cinco lobitos, para que me acuerde siempre de ella.

Back in Aranjuez I could play again with Pre. Daddy and mommy went to Madrid often, but I mostly stayed with my grandparents, who took me to visit their friends and showed me the village. Grandma Nieves ended up buying a doll who sings five little wolves, so that I always remember her.

Uno de esos días fui con mis papás a Madrid para conocer a la tía Maruja y también para ir a ver a la familia del tío Oswaldo, que es peruano, hermano de la abuela Chela, pero vive en Madrid. A él también le ha dado por la cocina y nos dio de comer cosas muy ricas.

One of those days I went with my parents to Madrid to get to know Aunt Maruja and also to visit Uncle Oswaldo's family. He is Peruvian, Grandma Chela's brother, but he lives in Madrid. He also is an expert cook and prepared yummy dishes for us.

Al final, después de tres semanas, nos volvimos a casa con un montón de recuerdos y unos kilos de más: unos cuantos en las maletas y los otros en el michelín. Muchas gracias a todos por vuestra hospitalidad y ¡hasta pronto!

In the end, after three weeks, we returned home with a lot of good memories and a few extra pounds: some in the suitcases and some in the spare tyre. Thank you everyone for your hospitality and see you soon!

El final del verano / The end of the summer

Casi sin darme cuenta se han pasado los días de salir al jardín a jugar e ir a pasear en manga corta. No es que me moleste, porque yo me lo paso bien igual, pero ya no es lo mismo.

The backyard playing days and the sleeveless strolls have gone away almost without noticing. It is not that it bothers me, because I have fun regardless, but it is not the same any more.

En estas semanas he hecho algunos progresos poniéndome de pie pero todavía me da miedo caminar. El otro día me puse unas zapatillas por primera vez y probé a dar pasos por la calle, pero todavía necesito ayuda para no caerme.

In these weeks I have made some progress standing up but I’m scared of walking. Last week I put on a pair of shoes for the first time and I tried to take little steps on the street, but I still need help not to fall.

Y aunque tampoco he aprendido a gatear, he encontrado una forma de desplazarme por el suelo que me funciona muy bien: arrastrando el culete.

And even though I have not learned how to crawl, I have found a way to move on the floor that works quite well for me: scooting around.



Esto hace que el universo de cosas a mi alcance se haya multiplicado por diez, para desesperación de mis papás que se pasan el día colocando lo que yo desordeno en cinco minutos.

The universe of things that I can reach has multiplied by ten, which gets on my parents’ nerves: they spend the day sorting out what I mess up in five minutes.

A finales de agosto fue el cumpleaños de papá y nos fuimos a ver un partido de baseball, que no es lo mismo que ir a Boston, pero al menos algo distinto. Jugaban los Blue Jays (Abejarucos Azules) de Toronto contra los Tigers (Tigres) de Detroit.

At the end of August it was daddy’s birthday and we went to a baseball game, which is not the same as a trip to Boston, but at least something different to do. We saw the Blue Jays play against the Detroit Tigers.

Yo ya había visto el baseball en la tele, pero en el campo era más divertido, con la gente cantando y animando en las jugadas clave. Aun así me dormí en la séptima entrada, porque al solecito y con la tripa llena no me pude resistir.

I had already watched baseball on TV, but it was more fun in the stadium, with people chanting and cheering on the key plays. Still, I fell asleep in the seventh inning: I could not resist with my tummy full on a warm afternoon.

Papá me dijo que estuvo interesante, porque el closer de los Jays que es un poco negado dejó escapar 3 carreras en la novena y sólo ganaron por una (5-4).

Daddy told me that it was interesting at the end, because the Jays’ closer, who is a little hopeless at closing games, let the Tigers score 3 runs in the ninth and they only won by one (5-4).

Esta semana nos vamos de vacaciones a España y voy a poder conocer la tierra y la familia de mi papá. Además me han dicho que allí el verano dura más, así que aún podré disfrutar un poco de buen tiempo. Ya os contaré como me va a la vuelta.

This week we are going on vacation to Spain and I will finally get to know daddy’s homeland and family. Besides I’ve been told that in Spain the summer lasts longer, which means that I will enjoy the good weather a little longer. I will tell you how it goes when I am back.

Aprendiendo a expresarme / Learning how to express myself

En las últimas semanas he descubierto el poder del lenguaje. He aprendido a decir que no con la cabeza, primero para que no me limpiaran la boca después de comer, y luego para decir que no quería comer más. Además sé arquear el cuerpo, que vale para decir que no quiero sentarme. Y cuando me toco las orejas es que quiero dormir.

In the last weeks I have discovered the power of language. I have learned how to say no with my head, first to prevent mommy from wiping my mouth after eating, and then to say that I did not want to eat any more. Besides I know how to arch my body, which means that I don't want to sit down. And when I touch my ears means that I want to sleep.

Pero no sólo es lenguaje de signos. No quiero decir que haya empezado a hablar así de la nada, pero he añadido sílabas a mi vocabulario (yeye, titi, tata, normalmente duplicadas) y poco a poco ya me voy haciendo entender.

But it is not just sign language. I don't mean that I have started to speak out of nowhere, but I have added syllables to my vocabulary (yeye, titi, tata, usually doubled) and little by little I'm making myself understood.




Cada vez como más cosas distintas. Lo que más me gusta es comer lo que comen mis papás, sobre todo las patatas fritas, el pan y la pasta, aunque lo que realmente quiero es estar sentada a la mesa con ellos. Ya me han salido cuatro dientes, dos abajo en medio, y dos arriba a los lados, que me vienen muy bien para morder las galletas, aunque parezco el Conde Draco de Barrio Sésamo.

Everyday I eat new different things. What I like the most is to eat what my parents eat, especially potato chips, bread and noodles, though what I really want is to be sitting at the table with them. I already have four teeth, two bottom teeth in the middle and two upper teeth at the sides, which come handy to bite the crackers, though I look like Count von Count from Sesame Street.

Mamá quiere que gatee y me pone boca abajo en el suelo, pero a mí me gusta más estar sentada. Además con la práctica del saltador ya tengo fuerza en las piernas y puedo sujetarme de pie, así que por ahora prefiero que me acerquen las cosas cuando las pido y cuando pueda caminar ya caminaré.

Mommy wants me to crawl and she places me facing down on the floor, but I like it better when I am sitting. Besides, having trained with the jumper for a few months I have strong legs and I can stand up holding on to something. For now I prefer that they pass me what I ask for and when I can walk I will walk.

Un día me cogí un catarro. Yo no sabía qué era un catarro, pero papá dijo que eso me pasa por destaparme por las noches, y que se cura con paciencia. Un fastidio, porque tenía mocos y tos, pero como dijo papá, en un par semanas se fue igual que vino.

One day I caught a cold. I did not know what a cold was, but daddy said that it happened because I had thrown the bedclothes off at night and that I had to be patient to get better. It was a nuisance, because I had runny nose and cough, but like daddy said, in a couple of weeks it went away the same way it came about.

Papá ha estado bastante ocupado últimamente pero se tomó un día de vacaciones antes del fin de semana largo y nos fuimos a Boston a pasar el cumpleaños de mamá. Fue un viaje un poco largo pero nos lo pasamos muy bien.

Daddy has been quite busy lately but he took a day off before a long weekend and we went to Boston to celebrate mommy's birthday. It was a long trip but we had a lot of fun.

Estuvimos primero en Cape Cod, que es la zona de playa de Massachusetts. Como no teníamos mucho tiempo no pudimos recorrerlo todo, y preferimos pasar un día en la playa y pasear por algunos de los pueblos que nos encontramos por el camino.

We went first to Cape Cod, which is the beach area in Massachusetts. We could not travel across the entire cape because we did not have much time, and we chose to spend one day on the beach and stroll around a couple of villages that we found in our way.

En Boston nos hicimos un tour por la ciudad en un vehículo anfibio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y nos contaron toda su historia con un toque de humor. También fuimos a Cambridge, porque mis papás querían ver cómo eran las Universidades de Harvard y MIT. Un poco abarrotadas, la verdad.

In Boston we took a city tour in an amphibious vehicle from World War II and they told us its history with a touch of humour. We also went to Cambridge, because my parents wanted to see Harvard University and MIT. A little bit crowded, actually.

Por lo demás, mamá y yo seguimos aprovechando los días de verano para disfrutar del jardín y para salir a pasear. Además nos hemos apuntado a clases de yoga, que me gustan porque puedo hacer todo sentada, y de natación, que disfruto un montón, porque me gusta el agua y en la piscina puedo hacer más cosas que en mi baño diario. Other than that, mommy and I are trying to take advantage of the summer days enjoying the backyard and going out for strolls. Besides we have signed up for yoga lessons, which I like because I can do everything sitting, and swimming lessons, which I enjoy a lot because I like water and I can do many more things in the swimming pool than in my daily bath. El Mundial / The World Cup

Hace unos días terminó el mundial de fútbol. No me imaginaba escribiendo de ello hace un mes, porque Canadá no participaba, Perú tampoco, y papá ya me había dicho que España normalmente lo hacía bien pero que siempre acababa perdiendo en cuartos de final.

A few days ago the soccer world cup came to an end. I did not imagine that I would be writing about it one month ago, because Canada did not participate, neither did Peru, and daddy had told me that Spain usually played well but ended up losing in quarterfinals.

Pero no todo es lo que parece: como Canadá no se había clasificado y Toronto está lleno de inmigrantes provenientes de todo el mundo la gente toma partido por diferentes países y gane quien gane siempre hay fiesta en alguna parte de la ciudad.

But sometimes things are not what they look like: with Canada not qualified and Toronto full of immigrants coming from all over the world, people cheers for different countries and no matter who wins there is always a celebration somewhere in the city.

En las esquinas de muchas calles se venden banderas de cada país que la gente instala en sus coches y sus casas y la ciudad es un arcoíris de color. Cuando las familias no se ponen de acuerdo pues ponen varias banderas a la vez. Da igual, lo importante no es ganar, sino ser parte de un evento que traspasa fronteras.

In the corners of many streets you can buy flags from any country and people install them in their cars or at home and the city becomes a colourful rainbow. When families don't agree they end up setting up different flags at the same time. It does not matter, winning is not the point, but being part of an event that goes across borders.

Y en medio de todo esto aparece la tía Sonia con una camiseta de España para que yo también pueda participar del mundial. Me la puse el primer día y España perdió inesperadamente. Luego mamá la guardó por si era gafe y sólo me la puse otra vez en la final, porque para entonces ya daba igual (ya habían pasado de cuartos): ¡y España ganó!

And in the midst of all this Aunt Sonia shows up with a Spanish baby T-shirt so that I also can be part of the world cup. I put it on the first day and Spain lost unexpectedly. Then mommy put it away in case it was jinxing them and never used it again until the final, because by then it did not matter what happened (they had gone beyond quarterfinals): and Spain won!

La final la vimos en Portland, en casa del tío César y la tía Ana, porque habíamos ido a pasar unos días para conocerlos y conocer también a los primos Clara y Martín. Los primos viven en una casa muy grande y teníamos muchas cosas para jugar. Clara estaba muy contenta de que hubiera ido y quería cuidarme todo el rato. Martín estaba un poco malito y no estaba tan contento como Clara, pero nos lo pasamos muy bien juntos.

We watched the final in Portland, at Uncle Cesar and Aunt Ana's home, because we had gone to spend a few days to get to know them and also to get to know cousins Clara and Martin. My cousins live in a big house and we had lots of things to play with. Clara was very happy with me being around and she wanted to look after me all the time. Martin was not feeling very well and he was not as happy as Clara, but we had a good time together.

Ahora ya estamos de vuelta en Toronto disfrutando de un verano bastante caluroso. Desde que volvimos de Perú han cambiado muchas cosas. Ya paso casi todo mi tiempo sentada y no necesito el Bumbo. Cuando duermo me gusta darme la vuelta y tumbarme de lado. Ya hago más sonidos cuando hablo con mis juguetes, aunque mi preferido es “ba..ba..ba..ba” que le digo a la osita Babababa. Pero lo que más ha cambiado son mis comidas.

Now we are back in Toronto enjoying a very warm summer. Since we returned from Peru many things have changed. I spend most of my daytime sitting and I don't need the Bumbo any more. When I sleep I like to roll over and lay on my side. I make more sounds when I talk to my toys, though my favourite one is "ba..ba..ba..ba", which I tell little bear Babababa. But what has changed the most are my meals.

Estaba deseando probar cosas nuevas y cuando regresamos de las vacaciones mamá me dio una galleta y me grabó en vídeo para capturar mi primera comida sólida. Luego empezó a hacer experimentos. Me cocina combinaciones de fruta, verdura y carne que congela en cubitos que luego mezcla con cereales para tener cosas siempre preparadas para combatir mi apetito voraz.

I was craving for tasting new things and when we arrived from our time away mommy gave me a baby cracker and she recorded a video to capture my first solid food. Then she started experimenting. She cooks combinations of fruit, vegetables and meat that she freezes in ice cubes and then mixes with cereals to have something ready any time she has to fight my voracious appetite.



Papá y mamá tienen suerte porque me gusta todo. Hasta lo que no me gusta me lo como, aunque les pongo cara fea para que lo sepan. Además me siento con ellos a la mesa y siempre me dan un poco de lo suyo: pan, yogur, patatas fritas, un poco de pescado, ... lo que sea.

Daddy and mommy are lucky because I like to eat everything. I eat even what I don't like, although I put an ugly face so that they realize. Besides I sit with them at the table and they always give me a little bit of their food: bread, yoghourt, fries, a little bit of fish, ... whatever.

Ahora me están empezando a salir los dientes, lo cual me fastidia un poco, pero cuando estén bien puestos voy a poder comer aún más cosas y sólo por eso merece la pena.

Now I am starting teething, which bothers me a little, but when my teeth are out there I will be able to eat even more types of food, and only for that it is worth the pain.

Mi primer viaje a Perú / My first trip to Peru

Ya sé que ha pasado mucho tiempo desde el último post, pero es que he estado de vacaciones y no he tenido tiempo para escribir. Acabo de volver después de cinco semanas en Perú, la tierra de mamá, donde he aprendido un montón de cosas.

I know it has been a while since my last post, but I have been on vacation and I have had no time to write. I have just returned after five weeks in Perú, mommy's motherland, where I have learned a lot of things.

He aprendido que tengo una familia grande, más grande de lo que yo creía. Mamá y yo viajamos primero y teníamos una fiesta cada día en una casa distinta, con primos y tíos, abuelos y bisabuelos, que se alegraban mucho de vernos, y nos sacábamos muchas fotos para celebrarlo.

I have learned that I have a big family, bigger than I thought. Mommy and I travelled first and we had a party every day in a different house, with cousins, uncles and aunts, grandparents and great-grandparents, who were very happy to see us, and we took a lot of pictures to celebrate it. 

He aprendido que hay países que están en el otro lado de la tierra (o hemisferio), y que cuando es verano en un lado es invierno en el otro y al revés. Cuando nos fuimos de Toronto cada vez hacía más calor, y sin embargo cada semana que pasamos en Perú era un poco más frío (si es que a eso se le puede llamar frío).

I have learned that there are countries that are at the other side of the earth (or hemisphere), and that when it is summer in one side it is winter in the opposite one, and the other way around. When we left Toronto it was getting warmer every day, and then each week that we spent in Peru it was getting a little colder (if you can call that cold).

He aprendido que el mar es enorme y que lo podíamos ver en casi todos los sitios a los que íbamos, aunque me han dicho que hay más mares en otras partes del mundo. El mar de Perú se llama Océano Pacífico, pero no era muy pacífico, porque a veces había olas grandes y el agua estaba fría.

I have learned that the sea is huge and we could see it anywhere we went, although I've been told that there are other seas in other parts of the world. The sea in Peru is called Pacific Ocean, but it was not very pacific, because the waves were often high and the water was cold.

He aprendido que la comida en Perú es distinta a la de Canadá, que les gusta mucho el pescado y que es un poco picante. Aunque a mí no me dieron a probar esas cosas, porque la verdad es que sigo prefiriendo mi leche, pero me dieron yogur y jugo de granadilla, que al parecer es la piedra angular de la alimentación de todo niño peruano.

I have learned that the food in Peru is not the same as in Canada, that they like eating fish a lot and also adding spice to it. Although I could not taste those things because, honestly, I still prefer my bottles of milk, I tried yogurt and granadilla juice, which seems to be the cornerstone of any Peruvian child's diet. 

He aprendido que los aviones te pueden llevar muy lejos, que hay que hablar con mucha gente distinta y pasar por muchas puertas hasta que te puedes subir a ellos, y que después del despegue es bastante aburrido, sobre todo en los viajes largos.

I have learned that planes can take you far away, that you have to talk to many different people and go through many gates before you can get into them, and that after the takeoff it is quite boring, especially in long flights.

Cuando llegué a Perú me reencontré con la abuela Chela y con el tío Javier y conocí a la tía Jessica, que se lo pasó tan bien conmigo que decía que quería tener un bebé. Todos fueron muy buenos conmigo y ayudaron a mamá para que ella tuviera tiempo para ver a sus amigos.

When I arrived to Peru I met up again with Grandma Chela and Uncle Javier and I met Aunt Jessica for the first time. She had such a good time with me than she said she wanted to have a baby. Everyone was very good with me and helped mommy so that she had time to meet her old friends.

Pasamos dos semanas en Lima antes de viajar a Trujillo, a la casa de la abuela Chela y Óscar donde estuvimos más tranquilos después del ajetreo de Lima. Luego llegó papá, que tenía mala cara de tanto trabajo y de tanto avión, y nos tomamos unas vacaciones en la playa.

We spent two weeks in Lima before travelling to Trujillo and we stayed at Grandma Chela and Oscar's home, where we could relax after the hectic days in Lima. A few days later daddy arrived, and he did not look good after so much work and so much time flying, and we decided to go to the beach.

Fuimos al norte a buscar buen tiempo (por lo de los hemisferios) y encontramos además una playa tranquila y un hotel casi para nosotros. También nos encontramos a la tía Maritza, que estaba celebrando el 40 aniversario de su graduación (mujeres de más de 50 años haciendo como que todavía tienen 15). El exceso de fiesta no le afectó la vista y un día se encontró el chupete que yo había perdido dos días antes y que el mar se había llevado cuando subió la marea.

We went to the northern part of Peru in search of good weather (because of the hemispheres) and we found a very quiet beach and a nearly empty hotel. We also met Aunt Maritza, who was celebrating the 40 year high school reunion (women over 50 behaving as they were 15). The amount of party time did not affect her eyesight and one day she found the soother I had lost two days before when the rising tide took it away from me.

En la playa probé el agua del mar en una piscina que la abuela Chela me había comprado y que papá llenaba todas la mañanas para que no estuviera fría. Era como tomarse un súper baño de una hora y el sabor de la sal me gustó, lo que era señal de que ya era hora de empezar a pensar en otros tipos de comida.

On the beach I could try sea water in a pool that Grandma Chela had bought for me, which daddy filled every morning to let the water warm up. It was like a full hour super bath and I liked the salty taste, which was a sign that it may be about time to start trying other types of food.  

Los paseos por la playa eran muy agradables, y con el canguro y el bumbo podíamos ir a cualquier sitio (aunque la gente nos miraba raro y pensaba que no éramos de allí y nos hablaba en inglés). El sol siempre se escondía en el mar y a papá le gustaba esperar a la hora del ocaso para captar el efecto del sol y el mar juntándose antes de anochecer.

Walking on the beach was very pleasant and with the carrier and the bumbo we could go anywhere (though people looked at us as we were foreigners and talked to us in English). The sun always hid behind the sea and daddy liked waiting for the sunset to capture the effect of sun and sea coming together before dusk.

Después del descanso volvimos a Trujillo, y luego a Lima y nos fuimos despidiendo de todos: de la abuela Chela, que lloró mucho, del tío Javier, que ya no me tiene miedo, de la tía Jessica, que se estaba pensando dos veces lo del bebé, de la tía Maritza, que siempre estaba dispuesta a pasar un rato conmigo, de los bisabuelos, que estaban contentos porque nunca lloraba cuando estaba con ellos, de la familia Santa María, que se juntó para despedirme en casa de la tía Berta, de la familia Fúster, que nos hizo una cena en casa de la tía Silvia.

After the break we returned to Trujillo, and then to Lima and we started to say goodbye to everyone: to Grandma Chela, who cried a lot, to Uncle Javier, who´s not scared about me any more, to Aunt Jessica, who was thinking twice about having a baby, to Aunt Maritza, who was always ready to spend time with me, to the Great-grandparents, who where happy becuase I did not cry when I was with them, to the entire Santa Maria Family, who got together to celebrate our visit in Aunt Berta´s home, to the Fuster Family, who gathered in Aunt Silvia´s home for a great dinner.

Un montón de familia, un montón de amigos de mamá, y un montón de recuerdos que tendré que refrescar para conservar. ¡Hasta la vista Perú!

A lot of family, a lot of mommy´s friends, and a lot of memories that I will have to refresh so that I can remember them. Au revoir Peru!
