Una casa para Avril / A house for Avril

Papá y mamá han vivido en Toronto desde que llegaron a Canadá y aunque les gusta mucho vivir allí: los restaurantes, el lago, los partidos de los Raptors, ¿el metro?, han pensado que no es lo más cómodo ni lo más adecuado para una niña pequeña como yo.

Daddy and mommy have lived in Toronto since they arrived to Canada and though they like the life there: the restaurants, the lake, the Raptors' games, the subway?, they have thought that it is not the most comfortable nor the most adequate place for a little girl like me.

Yo he estado con ellos desde que empezaron a buscar casa, pero aquí dentro no puedo distinguir muy bien y tampoco entiendo eso de la crisis. Querían una casa con jardín, con espacio, con carácter (¿?) y bien comunicada. Hubo que buscar un poco pero una vez que vieron la casa que les gustaba les fue fácil decidirse. Ahora sólo tienen que prepararla para mí. 

I have been with them since the moment they started the house search, but I cannot see well from in here and I don't understand anything about the crisis. They wanted a house with backyard, space, character (?), and well communicated. They had to search a bit but once they saw the house they liked it was easy for them to make up their minds. Now they just have to get it ready for me.

Bonita, ¿verdad? Está en Richmond Hill en un barrio tranquilo cerca del Estanque del Molino. Puedes dar un paseo por la calle en Google Maps. Y esto es lo que vieron papá y mamá cuando la compraron.

Nice, isn't it? It is in Richmond Hill in a quiet neighbourhood close to Mill Pond. You can take a walk along the street in Google Maps. And this is what daddy and mommy saw when they bought it.

¡Es una niña! / It is a girl!

Hoy papá y mamá han sabido algo que yo podía haberles dicho y han tenido que ir a que una señora con acento ruso y una máquina mágica les dijera que soy una niña. La máquina era capaz de ver a través de la barriga de mamá y hacía fotos como ésta que nos dieron de recuerdo.

Today daddy and mommy have found out something that I could have told them and they have had to go and visit a woman with Russian accent and a magic machine to get to know that I am a girl. The machine was able to see through mommy's tummy and could take photos like the one below that was given to us as a memory.

Aunque aún soy pequeñita, mamá dice que esa nariz y esa boca ya las ha visto antes, y cada vez que han visitado a las señoras con máquinas mágicas de ver se acrecentaron sus sospechas.

Though I am still very small, mommy says that she has seen that nose and that mouth before, and every time they have visited a woman with magic machines to see inside her suspicion increased.  

Cuando empecé a comunicarme con mis papás me preguntaron que cómo me llamaba. Yo ya lo sabía, así que se lo dije y también les conté cómo lo escogí. Quería un nombre bonito y que fuera fácil de pronunciar en cualquier sitio. Papá es de España, pero la gente dice que no es un español típico, y mamá es de Perú, aunque nadie lo adivina. Y yo voy a ser de Canadá, donde da igual de donde seas. Al final elegí Avril, que es bonito en español, en inglés (aunque aquí ponen el acento en la "a" en lugar de la "i") y gustará en Francia y Québec (siempre es importante llevarse bien con los franceses).

When I started to communicate with my parents they asked me what my name was. I already knew it, so I unveiled it to them, as well as how I had come up with it. I wanted a beautiful name that was easy to pronounce everywhere. Daddy is from Spain, though people say that he is not a typical Spaniard, and mommy is from Peru, but nobody figures it out. And I am going to be from Canada, where it does not matter where you are from. Finally I chose Avril, which is beautiful in Spanish, in English (though they put the stress on the "a" as opposed to the "i") and it will be liked in France and Québec (it is always important to get along with French people).

Avril, Avril, Avril. ¿Suena bien verdad? ¿Te gusta? A mí me encanta. Ya sé que no soy objetiva, pero me parece el nombre más bonito del mundo.

Avril, Avril, Avril. It sounds good, doesn't it? Do you like it? I love it. I know I am not objective, but I feel it is the most wonderful name in the world.

Bienvenido al mundo de Avril / Welcome to Avril's world

Hola. Mi nombre es Avril. Aún no he nacido pero he pensado (bueno, mi papá ha pensado, pero dice que lo hace por mí) que es una buena idea tener un sitio en Internet donde pueda estar en contacto con toda la gente que quiere saber de mí. También me dice que puede que ahora no lo aprecie, pero es el mejor regalo que se le ha ocurrido hacerme. Yo creo que hay algunos regalos mejores para un bebé, pero seré paciente y esperaré a ser mayor para apreciarlo.

Hi. My name is Avril. I am not born yet, but I have thought (well, my daddy has thought, but he says that he is doing it on my behalf) that it is a good idea to have an online site where I can be in contact with everyone who wants to know about me. He also says that I may not appreciate it now, but it is the best gift for a baby that he has come up with. I think that there are better baby gifts than this, but I will be patient and wait until I am older to appreciate it.

Papá dice que estoy destinada a ser bilingüe y por eso mi blog va a ser también bilingüe, para desarrollar mis habilidades lingüísticas en inglés y en español, así como las de todos los que me sigan. A mí la verdad es que me parece un lío lo de los idiomas, pero si lo piensas tiene que estar bien lo de viajar por ahí y si no te entienden con un idioma probar con otro. Lo que no he pensado bien es qué pasa si no te entienden después de usar los dos, pero ya lo averiguaré cuando sea mayor.

Daddy says that I am meant to be bilingual and that is why my blog is also bilingual, so that I can develop my language skills both in English and Spanish, as well as those of my blog followers. I honestly find the two language thing a little messy, but if you think it twice, it has to be kind of cool to travel around the world and if people don't understand you in one then you try the other one. What I haven't thought yet is what happens if they don't understand you after using both, but I will figure it out when I grow up.
