Este año también fuimos a España, pero el plan fue diferente al de años anteriores. Esta vez los abuelos no habían podido venir a Canadá, porque el abuelo Pablo estaba malo y tenía que ir al hospital a un tratamiento, así que nos fuimos todos para allá nada más acabar el colegio.

This year we also went to Spain, but it was different from previous years. This time grandpa and grandma had not been able to come to Canada, because Grandpa Pablo was sick and he had to go to the hospital for treatment, so all of us went over there as soon as the school was over.

Mientras el abuelo terminaba con los médicos, nosotros cuatro nos fuimos a pasar una semana a una isla de España que se llama Mallorca. Papá la conocía porque había ido de vacaciones allí de pequeño, y mamá quería ir porque su bisabuelo vivió allí antes de irse a vivir a Perú.

While grandpa finished up with the doctors, the four of us went to spend a week to an island in Spain called Mallorca. Daddy knew it because he used to go there on vacation when he was little, and mommy wanted to go because her great-grandfather lived there before going to Peru.

Fue un festín de playa. Otras veces hemos ido a sitios con playa, lo que significaba estar cerca de una playa e ir al mismo sitio todos los días. Esta vez, sin embargo, fuimos a una playa distinta cada día. Algunas eran grandes.

It was beach feast. In the past, we had gone to beach places, but that meant being close to a beach and going there every day. This time though, we went to a different beach each day. Some where big.

Y algunas eran pequeñas.

And some small.

Unas tenían rocas.

Some had rocks.

Y otras eran de arena.

And some were sandy.

Pero tampoco nos pasábamos el día en la playa. Cada día teníamos alguna actividad por la tarde para conocer mejor la isla. Un día fuimos a conocer el pueblo donde nació el bisabuelo de mamá, y nos hicimos una foto junto a la iglesia donde fue bautizado en el siglo XIX.

However, we did not spend the entire day on the beach. Every day we had an afternoon activity to get to know the island. One day we went to the town where mom’s great-grandfather was born, and we took a picture by the church where he was baptized in the XIX century.

O nos íbamos a conocer los pueblos en la montaña.

Or we went to get to know the mountain towns.

O nos metíamos en unas cuevas enormes donde tocaban música.

Or we got inside a big cave where they played classical music.

O nos subíamos al castillo más alto de Palma de Mallorca.

Or we went to the highest Castle in Palma de Mallorca.

Lo pasamos muy bien. La semana se nos fue volando y aunque estábamos tristes por dejar la playa atrás, volvimos a Madrid con la sonrisa puesta. Mamá dice que había encontrado sus raíces allí y que no le importaría volver a menudo.

We had a great time. The week flew by and even though we were sad because we had to leave the beach behind, we got back to Madrid with a smile in our faces. Mommy says that we she had found her roots there and she would not mind returning often.

Papá y mamá pasaron unos días con nosotros en Navalacruz hasta que el abuelo quedó libre de compromisos sanitarios y ahí empezaron las vacaciones en España que conocíamos de años anteriores.

Daddy and mommy spent some time with us in Navalacruz until grandpa was free of health commitments and then we started the summer vacation in Spain we were used to from previous years.

Los primos llegaron poco después y no tardamos en encontrar cosas que hacer todos juntos. El abuelo Pablo nos trajo unas camisetas y acabamos todos uniformados, por si no estaba claro que éramos familia.

The cousins arrived soon after and soon we found things to do all together. Grandpa Pablo brought some T-shirts and we ended up in uniforms, in case someone had missed that we were family.

Yo aún tenía trabajo de rehabilitación que hacer con la pierna y los primos me ayudaban todos los días para que no tuviera la tentación de procrastinar.

I still had to do physiotherapy exercises with my leg and the cousins helped me every day so that I was not tempted to procrastinate.

A Clara le llamaba la atención mi ropa y la mejor excusa que se le ocurrió para probársela fue hacer un desfile de modelos que se convirtió en entretenimiento para toda la familia.

Clara was interested in my clothes and, for her to try them on, she came up with the idea of organizing a fashion catwalk, which ended up being the entire family’s entertainment.

Es una pena que no se puedan quedar más tiempo, pero siempre quedan muchas cosas que hacer: el campamento de verano, las verbenas, las excursiones, los juegos en la plaza, los días en Ávila, la piscina … muchos niños y muchas horas para jugar.

It’s unfortunate that they cannot stay longer, even though there is always something else to do: summer camp, concerts, games in the town square, days in Avila, the swimming pool … many kids and many hours to play.

Mientras tanto, seguía leyendo mis libros de Harry Potter, no tan rápido como cuando tenía la pierna escayolada, pero ahí andaba con el número 4 de la serie.

Meanwhile, I kept Reading my Harry Potter books, not as fast as when I had my leg in a cast, but I made my way through the fourth book of the series.

Un día a mediados de agosto hubo un incendio en la montaña que rodea el pueblo. Al principio parecía otra atracción más, pero cuando empezó a acercarse y se podía sentir el calor y oler el humo, ya no tenía gracia. Por suerte los bomberos pudieron apagarlo antes de que llegara a las casas.

One day mid-August there was a fire in the mountain that surrounds the town. In the beginning it looked like another attraction, but when it started to get closer and you could feel the heat and smell the smoke, it wasn’t funny anymore. Fortunately, the firefighters could put it off before it reached the houses.

Cuando papá y mamá llegaron ya sabíamos que nos quedaba poco para volver a Canadá. Aun así, intentamos aprovechar los días que teníamos. Un día fuimos a Gredos. Ya habíamos estado antes, pero nunca habíamos llegado tan lejos.

When daddy and mommy came back, we knew there were a few days left to return to Canada. Still, we tried to make the most of the days we had. One day we went to Gredos. We had been there before, but we had not gone that far.

Llegamos a Canadá justo antes de volver al colegio. Ya nos sabemos la rutina y no es tan emocionante, pero tiene gracia sacarse una foto el primer día para ver cómo vamos creciendo y también si el primer martes de septiembre hace frío o calor. Este año fue más bien fresco.

We arrived in Canada just before school started. We already know the routine and it is not as exciting, but it’s still fun to take a picture the first day to see how we are growing and also to check whether the first Tuesday in September is cold or hot. This time it fell on the cool side.

Quinto me está pareciendo fácil por ahora. Aunque muchos de los compañeros han cambiado, tengo la misma profesora de inglés y matemáticas, que está muy contenta conmigo y me pone buenas notas. El francés no me hace tanta gracia, porque tiene un montón de reglas para escribir que no sé cómo me voy a aprender, pero también saco buenas notas.

Fifth grade looks easy so far. Even though some of the classmates have changed, I had the same English and Math teacher, who is very happy with me and gives me good marks. French is not as fun, with so many rules to write it that I don’t know how I’m going to learn them, but I also get good marks.

Los primeros días de otoño son muy bonitos en Canadá y siempre aprovechamos para salir a jugar y dar paseos antes de que se ponga frío de verdad. Un poco de ejercicio y montar en bicicleta me ayudaron a fortalecer la pierna y ya casi no cojeo.

The first fall days are beautiful in Canada and we always try to go out for walks and play before it gets seriously cold. A little bit of exercise and being able to ride my bike helped me gain more strength in my leg and I barely limp now.

En estas había pasado al quinto libro de la serie de Harry Potter y al hablarlo con mis amigas descubrí que muchas de ellas también estaban leyendo los libros. A mamá le pareció estupendo y me regaló las películas de la serie, que he acabado viendo antes de leer los libros.

At that time, I was on Harry Potter’s fifth book and when I talked about it with my friends I found out that many of them were reading the books too. Mommy thought it was great and she bought me all the movies in the series, which I have ended up watching before reading the books.

Harry Potter se convirtió en el centro de las conversaciones y el tema que elegíamos para nuestros proyectos. Y así es como elegí ir vestida de Hermione, el personaje femenino de Harry Potter, por Halloween. Diego, como siempre, escogió algo para que no se le viera la cara.

Harry Potter turned out to be the centre of conversations and the theme we chose for our school projects. And that is how I chose to dress up as Hermione, the female character in Harry Potter, for Halloween. Diego, as always, chose something that covered his face.

Y siguiendo con el tema, mamá me preparó un cumpleaños Harry Potter en casa con mis amigas. Empezando con la invitación.

And continuing with the theme, mommy prepared a Harry Potter birthday at home with my friends. Starting with the invitation.

Para el cumpleaños elegí ver una película. No podía ser una de Harry Potter porque son muy largas, así que seleccioné una antigua que nos habían enseñado papá y mamá y que les gustó mucho a todos: Los Goonies.

For the party I chose to watch a movie. It could not be a Harry Potter one because they are too long, so I selected an old one that daddy and mommy had shown us before, and everyone loved it: The Goonies.

A todo esto, papá cambió de trabajo. Después de un montón de años trabajando en TELUS, se fue a Air Canada en octubre. Nunca he sabido muy bien lo que hacía así que no puedo explicar lo que va a hacer ahora, pero lo que sí sé es que siempre viajamos en Air Canada cuando vamos a España y cuando vamos Perú, y ahora vamos a tener más oportunidades.

During all this, daddy changed jobs. After many years working at TELUS, he has gone to Air Canada in October. I have never known well what he did before so I cannot explain what he does now, but what I know is that we always travel with Air Canada when we go to Spain and Peru, and we will have more opportunities.

La primera no tardó en llegar. Aunque este año no tocaba, viajamos a Perú a pasar la Navidad. Gris ya sabe lo que va a pasar cuando ve las maletas y puso uno de sus juguetes dentro para decirnos que se quería venir, pero desafortunadamente, no podemos llevarlo en el avión a otros países.

The first one came quickly. Even though this wasn’t a Peru year, we could go there to spend Christmas. Gris already knows what is going to happen when he sees the suitcases and he put one of his toys inside to tell us that he wanted to come, but unfortunately, we cannot take him on the plane to other countries.

Una vez en Perú, estuvimos unos días en Lima y luego viajamos a Trujillo a casa de la abuela Chela: más piscina, más playa, y más tiempo con la familia.

Once in Peru, we spent a few days in Lima and then we travelled to Trujillo to Grandma Chela’s house: more swimming pools, more beach, and more time with the family.

Incluso tuvimos tiempo de hacer una visita cultural. Hay una ciudad hecha de barro que se llama Chan Chan justo al lado de Trujillo que al parecer es como era Trujillo en la antigüedad. No sé ni cómo ha soportado el paso del tiempo, porque está ahí al lado de la carretera y parece que se va a deshacer en cuanto caiga una tromba de agua. De todos modos, fue interesante aprender cómo vivían los aborígenes de Perú antes de que llegaran los europeos.

Even we had time to make a cultural visit. There is a city built in mud named Chan Chan right beside Trujillo, which apparently was the ancient Trujillo. I don’t know how it has withstood the passing of time, because it is right there by the highway and it looks like it is going to dissolve when there is a rainstorm. In any case, it was interesting to learn how the aboriginal people in Peru lived before the Europeans arrived.

Accidentes / Accidents

Desde pequeñita me acostumbré a decir eso de “ha sido un accidente” cuando pasaba algo malo y no era mi culpa. Pues bien, me ha tocado aprender lo que son los accidentes más serios, y no porque se me haya manchado la camiseta o se me haya caído el vaso al suelo, pero dejad que os lo cuente cronológicamente.

Since I was little I was used to saying “it was an accident” whenever something bad happened and it wasn’t my fault. Well, I have had to learn what real accidents are, and not because I got an stain in my t-shirt or my water cup fell on the floor, but let me tell you in chronological order.

Como hace dos años, volvimos a viajar a Perú por Navidad, aunque esta vez no fuimos a Trujillo, sino que nos quedamos en Lima a celebrar las fiestas antes de ir a la playa por una semana. Durante dos o tres días encadenamos comidas y cenas con diferentes partes de la familia, que sigue creciendo y creciendo, hasta que vimos a todos.

Like two years ago, we travelled to Peru for Christmas, though this time we didn’t go to Trujillo, but we stayed in Lima to celebrate the holidays before going to the beach for a week. For two or three days we had lunches and dinners with different parts of the family, which continues to grow and grow, until we met everyone.

Una vez en la playa empezamos otra rutina más divertida de parque, paseos, juegos y, por supuesto, playa. Como la familia sigue creciendo cogimos dos apartamentos en el mismo sitio que estuvimos hace dos años.

Once on the beach we started a more fun routine playing in the park, walking around, and of course going to the beach. Because the family continues to grow we needed two apartments in the same condominium we were two years ago.

Esta vez no teníamos piscina en el apartamento, pero teníamos jacuzzi. No era lo mismo, pero lo pasamos en grande jugando con las burbujas, como este día que vinieron a visitarnos Fátima y Giulia, bueno y Giorgio, que ya ocupa lugar.

This time we didn’t have a pool in the apartment, but we had a jacuzzi. It was not the same, but we had a great time playing with the bubbles, like this day when Fatima and Giulia came to visit, well and Giorgio as well, who is starting to demand some space.

Y después llegó el primer accidente. Estábamos preparándonos para acabar el año cuando mi mano se resbaló haciendo una voltereta y acabé golpeando el suelo con la barbilla. Se montó un buen lío y no quería mirar porque había sangre por todas partes. Al final acabamos en una clínica donde me dieron dos puntos para cerrar la herida. Por suerte no dolía mucho y aún llegué a tiempo de celebrar el Año Nuevo.

And then the first accident arrived. We were getting ready to close the year when my hand slipped doing a cartwheel and I landed face down hitting the floor with my chin. It was a big mess and I didn’t want to look because there was blood everywhere. We ended up at a clinic where they gave me two stitches to close the wound. Fortunately it didn’t hurt much and I could get back to celebrating the New Year.

Al llegar a Toronto unos días después me pude quitar el apósito y sólo tuve que tener los puntos un par de semanas más. Después del susto no fue para tanto, aunque lo cierto es que aún se me ve la marca.

When we returned to Toronto a few days later I could remove the dressing and I only need to keep the stitches a couple more weeks. After the scare it was not that bad, although you still can see the scar in my chin.

A finales de enero llegó el día de usar las entradas que me habían regalado en mi cumpleaños para ir 

a ver a los Raptors. Había preparado una pancarta, aunque no era tan sofisticada como las que se ven en la tele. Los Raptors ganaron por mucha diferencia, porque este año están jugando muy bien.

Towards the end of January the day to use the Raptors tickets I got for my birthday arrived. I had prepared a poster, although not as sophisticated as the ones you see on TV. The Raptors won by a lot, because this year they are playing very well.

Una vez organizados y restablecidos empezamos con algunas de las actividades invernales. Aprovechando que Diego había aprendido a patinar, nos fuimos al circuito de Richmond Green, y un par de veces fuimos a la ladera detrás del Mill Pond a tirarnos con el trineo.

Once settled and organized we started some of the winter activities. Now that Diego had learned how to skate, we went to the Richmond Green circuit, and a couple of days we went to the little hill by the Mill Pond to do tobogganing.

En el colegio las cosas marchaban mejor. Ya me había acostumbrado a alternar clases en inglés y francés y le había cogido el truco a las matemáticas. Uno de los trabajos que más me gustó fue el de comparar cómo era la escuela cuando mi abuela era pequeña y la de hoy día. Incluía hacer una entrevista, redactar las diferencias y documentarlo con fotos.

At school things went along better. I had gotten used to alternating English and French classes and I eventually I figured out math. One of the assignments I enjoyed the most was creating a comparison between how the school was when my grandma was little and today. It required making an interview, composing differences and documenting it with photos.

A veces piensas que el invierno en Toronto es frío y complicado por la nieve, pero este año pudimos comprobar que hay sitios peores.

Sometimes you think that the winter in Toronto is cold and complicated due to the snow, but this year we could verify that there are places where it is worse.

Para las vacaciones de primavera habíamos planeado un viaje a Quebec, divididos entre un fin de semana en Quebec City y dos días esquiando en Mont Tremblant. Aunque era casi primavera en Toronto y ya había empezado a templar, cuando llegamos a Quebec City aún les quedaba algo de invierno con que lidiar.

For March Break we had planned to make trip to Quebec, split between a weekend in Quebec City and two days skiing in Mont Tremblant. Even though it was almost spring in Toronto and it was getting warmer, when we arrived to Quebec City there was still some winter to deal with.

Pero aun así y aunque estuviéramos pasmados de frío, merecía la pena dar un paseo y conocer la ciudad.

In spite of how cold it was, it was worth strolling around and getting to know the city.

Después fuimos a Mont Tremblant, no sin antes atravesar una tormenta de nieve. Es un sitio muy bonito y mamá había preparado todo para que Diego y yo aprendiéramos a esquiar. Teníamos una clase con un instructor para los dos el primer día, y una clase de grupo el segundo.

Later we went to Mont Tremblant crossing a winter blizzard. It is a beautiful place and mommy had prepared everything for Diego and me to learn how to ski. We had lessons with a private instructor for both of us the first day, and a group lesson the second.

Empezamos pronto por la mañana y todo iba genial. Diego aprendió rápido y pronto sabíamos lo básico para frenar y girar. Salimos de la ladera de principiantes y nos llevaron a una pista verde que nos hicimos unas cuantas veces. Nos encontramos con mamá y papá y ya estábamos haciendo planes para esquiar todos juntos por la tarde.

We started early in the morning and everything was going great. Diego learned quickly and soon we knew the basics to stop and turn. We left the bunny hill and we went to a green run that we did a few times. We ran into mommy and daddy and we were already making plans to ski all together in the afternoon.

Hasta que en la última bajada antes de terminar la clase me caí no sé cómo, en una postura extraña, y me dolió mucho. Me llevaron a la clínica donde tuve mucho miedo hasta que llegaron mamá y papá. Al parecer me había roto la tibia y el peroné.

But in the last run before finishing the class I fell I don’t know how, in a weird position, and it hurt a lot. They took me a to a clinic, where I was very scared until mommy and daddy arrived. Apparently, I had broken both tibia and fibula.

Tuvimos que adelantar el regreso. Fuimos al hospital en Richmond Hill y tuvieron que recolocarme la pierna antes de ponerme una escayola. Una vez protegida no dolía tanto, pero estaba triste porque imaginaba que no iba a poder hacer muchas cosas.

We had to return earlier. We went to the hospital in Richmond Hill and they had to straighten the leg before putting a cast on it. Once protected it didn’t hurt as much, but I was sad because I imagined that I would miss many things.

Papá me dijo que no me preocupara que, si aprendía a moverme bien con las muletas, podría hacer todo lo que quisiera, menos ir a nadar, por razones obvias. Dicho y hecho. No me perdí ni un día de colegio, y pude seguir con las clases de español, piano y teatro.

Daddy told me not to worry and that if I learned how to move around in crutches, I could do everything I wanted, except swimming, for obvious reasons. Said and done. I didn’t miss a single school day and carried on with Spanish lessons, piano and theater.

Como tenía que estar sentada más de lo normal decidí dedicar tiempo a la lectura, y empecé con la serie de Harry Potter, que me enganchó desde el principio. Gris también quería leer, así que le prestaba las gafas de lectura.

Because I had to spend more time sitting around than normal, I decided to turn into reading and I started the Harry Potter series, which hooked me up from the beginning. Gris wanted to read too, so I lent him the reading glasses.

Mientras los Raptors se pusieron serios y los playoffs no acabaron en mayo como otros años. Ganaron algunos partidos de infarto, se plantaron en la final, y contra pronóstico ganaron la NBA. Era algo surrealista que se convirtió en el tema de conversación en todas partes, y que hizo más especial mi regalo de cumpleaños. Mamá incluso se pasó por el desfile para tomar unas fotos.

Meanwhile the Raptors turned it a up a notch and the playoffs didn’t end in May for them like it did before. They won some nail biters, made it to the final, and against all odds they won the NBA. It was almost surreal that became the trending topic everywhere, and made my birthday present even more special. Mommy even went to the championship parade to take some pictures.

Me quitaron la escayola dos meses después del accidente, pero aún tuve que llevar una bota durante un mes más. Tuve que hacer mi actuación de Ovation con las muletas, pero no fue un problema. Ajustamos la escena para que pudiera sentarme y al final de la obra la gente aplaudió mucho.

They took out the cast two months after the accident, but I still had to wear a walking boot for one more month. I had my Ovation performance on crutches, but it wasn’t a problem. We adjusted the scene so that I could be sitting and at the end of the play people applauded a lot.

Para cuando me quitaron la bota sólo quedaban tres semanas de colegio. Me quedó un poco de cojera, porque había perdido mucha fuerza en la pierna, y tuve que ir a una fisioterapeuta, que me mandó ejercicios para fortalecerla y mejorar mi equilibrio.

By the time I got rid of the boot there were three school weeks left. I still limped a bit, because I had lost strength in the leg, and I had to go to a physiotherapist, who gave me a list of exercises to strengthen the leg and regain balance.

Y así pude participar sin muletas en los últimos eventos de la primavera: el cumpleaños de Diego, algo sencillo en casa, y el concierto de piano, que probablemente sea el último.

And that way I could participate without crutches in the last set of spring events: Diego’s birthday, something simple at home, and the piano concert, most likely the last one I play in.

Chicho Terremoto / Dash Kapei

Al principio del otoño vino de visita el tío Javier, aunque ya no vino solo. Se trajo a la tía Katherine y al primo Mateo, pero dejaron a Zara en Perú. Llegaron cuando el tiempo aún era bueno, así que pudimos hacer muchas cosas.

At the beginning of the fall Uncle Javier came to visit us, although this time he didn’t come alone. He brought Aunt Katherine and cousin Mateo, but they left Zara in Peru. They arrived when the weather was still good, so we were able to do lots of things. 

A mí me hacía ilusión que viniera Mateo para jugar con él y enseñarle sitios en Canadá, pero lo cierto es que aún es pequeño y no fácil de controlar. Papá dijo que parecía Chicho Terremoto, pero nadie sabía de qué hablaba hasta que nos puso un capítulo de unos dibujos animados prehistóricos en Youtube.

I was happy that Mateo was coming, so that we could play with him and show him places in Canada, but the truth is that he is still young and not easy to keep in check. Daddy said he looked like Dash Kappei, but nobody knew what he was talking about until he played an episode of some prehistoric cartoons in Youtube.

Fuimos al parque, les enseñamos los alrededores de Richmond Hill, e incluso nos hicimos una excursión a las cataratas del Niágara. También coincidió que cuando estaban aquí era el cumpleaños de Gris, así que sacamos los trastos de cumpleaños y lo celebramos todos juntos.

We went to the park, we showed them around Richmond Hill, and even we made a trip to Niagara Falls. It coincided that Gris’ birthday was during those days, so we broke out the birthday stuff and we celebrated it all together. 

En el colegio, como siempre, me costó coger el ritmo y entender cuáles eran las expectativas de las nuevas profesoras. No es que el curso sea difícil, sino que cada profesor tiene su manera de enseñar y es necesario adaptarse.

At school, as always, it took me time to get the rhythm and understand the new teachers’ expectations. It’s not a matter of the course being difficult, but each teacher has their teaching style and you have to adjust.

Una de las adaptaciones, por ejemplo, fue la introducción del inglés. Llevo hablándolo toda mi vida pero no había tenido que escribirlo hasta ahora. Milagrosamente el deletreo y la gramática han aterrizado en mi cabeza sin demora, y por otro lado he seguido mejorando el francés sin interferencia. Se ve que saben lo que están haciendo.

One of those adjustments, for example, was the introduction of English language. I have spoken it all my life but I had not had to write in English until now. Miraculously spelling and grammar have landed in my head, and in parallel I have continued to improve my French without interference. It looks as though they know what they are doing.

Uno de los trabajos que tuve que hacer fue documentar mis días con un “amigo de peluche” que nos dejaba la profesora. Se llamaba Petit Bouleau y lo llevé a todos los sitios para que supiera cómo paso el tiempo fuera del colegio. Gris me ayudó a que se lo pasara bien.

One of the assignments I had this fall was to document my days with a “stuffy friend” that the teacher shared with us. He was called Petit Bouleau and I took him everywhere so that he would know how I spend my team away from the school. Gris helped me ensure he had a good time.

Este año por Halloween, quizá por la influencia de Gris, decidí disfrazarme de gato. Mamá compró maquillaje para complementar el disfraz quedó mucho mejor.

This year in Halloween, perhaps due to Gris’ influence, I decided to wear a cat costumer. Mommy bought makeup to top it up and the costume looked much better.

Nos salió un día bueno (al menos no llovió) y nos juntamos con otros niños del grupo del Busy Bee y nos lo pasamos muy bien recolectando golosinas.

Weather was good that day (at least it didn’t rain) and a big group of former Busy Bees got together to go around collecting candy.

Poco después, como siempre, llegó mi cumpleaños, no sin antes recibir la primera nevada del invierno, antes del invierno, y seguimos con el tema del gato.

Soon after, like always, my birthday arrived, not before we welcomed the first the first snow storm of the winter , before the winter, and I continued with the cat theme.

Ya no estamos para columpios, así que invitamos a mis mejores amigas a casa: Claudia, Donya, Christina y Angel. Lo pasamos genial, sin mucho estruendo, simplemente estando todas juntas con nuestras historias.

We are old for playgrounds, so we decided to invite my best friends to come home: Claudia, Donya, Christina and Angel. We had a great time, without much noise, simply being all together with our stories.

Me regalaron juegos de manualidades, un telescopio y un microscopio, y un regalo diferido de papá y mamá: entradas para ir a ver a los Raptors en enero.

They brought me crafts games, a telescope and a microscope, and a future present from mommy and daddy: tickets to see the Raptors in January.

Y mientras tanto, Diego, Gris y yo pasamos el rato con cualquier cosa.

In the meantime, Diego, Gris and I enjoy our time doing whatever.

Verano en España – 2ª parte / Summer in Spain – Part 2

A primeros de julio, exactamente como el año pasado, viajamos a España con papá y los abuelos. El plan era el mismo y ya sabíamos que esperar. Papá se quedó unos días y justo cuando se iba a volver a Toronto me dio un poco de miedo quedarme sola, pero los abuelos se portaron muy bien y al final se me pasó.

Early in July, exactly as we did one year ago, we traveled to Spain with daddy, grandma and grandpa. The plan was the same and we knew what to expect. Daddy stayed a few days and when he was about to return to Toronto I was scared to stay by myself, but grandma and grandpa took care of me and the sad feelings went away.

Lo que más me gusta de Navalacruz es cuando llegan los primos y estamos todos juntos, pero eso sólo pasa durante una semana, así que tenemos que disfrutar de todo lo demás que hay allí.

What I like the most about Navalacruz is when the cousins arrive and we are all together, but that is only for a week, so that we have to enjoy everything else we have there.

Por ejemplo de las excursiones a Ávila con los abuelos. A veces vamos a comprar, a veces a ver a algún familiar, y a veces simplemente a dar un paseo. Es un buen sitio para comer helados y también para tomar fotos, porque las vistas son espectaculares.

For example the trips to Avila with the grandparents. Sometimes we go shopping, sometimes to visit family, and other times simply to go for a walk. It’s a good place to eat ice cream and also to take pictures, because the views are spectacular.

Cuando los primos llegaron empezó la acción. Fuimos a la sierra, jugamos dentro y fuera de la casa, fuimos a la piscina, y aunque este día terminó volviéndose frío inesperadamente y nos pilló sin chaqueta, no nos importó mucho.

When the cousins arrived the action started. We went to the mountains, we played inside and outside the house, we went to the swimming pool, and even though this day ended up turning to be unexpectedly cold and caught us without our jackets, we did not care much.

También nos sentábamos a hacer deberes todos juntos, aunque he de confesar que no era lo que más me apetecía hacer esos días.

We also sat down together to do our homework, though I have to say that it was not what I felt like doing those days.

Fue una pena que este año se perdieran la fiesta de la espuma. Yo estaba un poco triste porque se acababan de ir pero se me pasó rápido en cuando empezaron las festividades.

It was a pity that this year they missed the foam party. I was a bit sad because they had just left but I felt better as soon as the festivities started.

Al final pasamos siete semanas en Navalacruz. Me lo pasé bien en el parque de niños y en el de mayores, dando paseos con el abuelo Pablo, en el campamento de verano, cogiendo moras, en los juegos nocturnos en la plaza, jugando con los niños del barrio y con los del campamento cuando los veía en la plaza.

In the end we spent seven weeks in Navalacruz. I had a great time in the children’s park and in the grown-up’s park, going for a walk with Grandpa Pablo, in the summer camp, collecting blackberries, at the night games in the town square, playing the neighbourhood kids and with my camp friends when I met them at the square.

La verdad es que estaba tan integrada que ya me conocía todo el mundo. Ya no soy la hija de David, sino que soy Avril y papá es el padre de Avril.

The truth is that I was so integrated that everyone knew me. I am no longer David’s daughter, but Avril, and daddy is Avril’s daddy.

Cuando volvimos a Canadá me costó un poco. Por un lado porque me daba pena dejar el pueblo, aunque estoy aprendiendo a controlar mejor mis emociones, y por otro porque tenía que adaptarme a estar en casa más tiempo.

When we returned to Canada it took me a bit to adjust. On one side because I was sad to leave, though I’m learning to control my emotions, and on the other because we had to get used to spending more time at home.

Lo que me gustó fue reencontrarme con la bicicleta. En el pueblo no quise montar porque es un poco peligroso, pero fue un alivio comprobar que no se me había olvidado y que aún estaba tan hábil como antes de viajar a España.

What I liked the most was to reunite with my bicycle. In the village I did not want to ride because it is little bit dangerous, but it was a relief to find out that I had not forgotten how to do it and that I was as fit as I was before going to Spain.

Poco después de volver empezamos el colegio. Este año es especial porque he cambiado de Michaëlle Jean a Beverley Acres que es el colegio para los cursos entre 4º y 8º y ahora la mitad del tiempo aprendemos en francés y la mitad en inglés. Al principio imponía un poco, porque es más grande y hay niños mayores, pero muchos de los compañeros son los mismos que en los años anteriores y enseguida me acostumbré.

Soon after returning we went back to school. This year is special because I have changed from Michaëlle Jean to Beverley Acres, which is a school for grades 4 to 8, and now half of the time we learn in French and the other half in English. In the beginning it impressed a bit, because it’s bigger and there are older kids, but many of my classmates are the same as in previous years and I got used to it right away.

Aunque sea un colegio distinto, afortunadamente está cubierto con la misma ruta de autobús, así que puedo ir con Diego por las mañanas, y regresamos juntos cuando volvemos en autobús.

Although it is a different school, fortunately we use the same bus route, so Diego and I can go together in the morning and return home as well the days we take the bus.

Ya monto en bici / I can ride a bike

Esta primavera he aprendido a montar en bicicleta, aunque fue un proceso en varias partes. Primero tuvimos que comprar una bicicleta nueva, sin rueditas, pero no pudimos ponernos a ello enseguida porque el invierno no se quería ir y tuvimos nieve hasta bien entrado el mes de abril.

This spring I have learned how to ride a bike, even though it was a multi-step process. First we had to buy a new bicycle, without training wheels, but we could not get to it right away because the winder didn’t want to go away and we had snow until late in April.

Fue poco después de Semana Santa, que fue también más fría de lo normal. Este año mamá decidió que nosotros organizáramos una fiesta para buscar huevos de pascua y nos lo pasamos genial. Papá escondió un montón de huevos en el jardín y entre todos los niños dimos cuenta de ellos en menos de cinco minutos.

That was son after Easter, which was colder than normal as well. This year mommy decided that we organized the Easter egg hunt and we had a great time. Daddy hid lots of eggs in the backyard and all of us kids found them in less than five minutes.

Cuando mejoró el tiempo pudimos por fin empezar a tener actividades más propias de la primavera. Pudimos ir al parque, hicimos una visita al zoo, empezamos las clases de tenis, y volvimos a la natación (aunque eso lo podemos hacer con frío porque la piscina es cubierta).

When the weather improved we could finally take on activities more suited for spring. We could go to the park, visit the zoo, start tennis lessons, and get back to swimming (even though we can do that with cold weather because we swim in an indoor pool).

Y a fuerza de repetir y repetir, un día le cogí el truco a la bicicleta. No sé muy bien qué pasó, pero de repente no necesité echar el pie a tierra a cada rato y al dar pedales podía ir en línea recta sin caerme.

And by repeating and repeating, one day I I could ride the bike. I don’t know well what happened, but all of the sudden I did not need to put my feet on the ground and I could go straight without falling when pedaling.

En el colegio las cosas también iban sobre ruedas. A estas alturas ya le había cogido el truco a todas las asignaturas y habíamos empezado las actividades para celebrar el final del curso, que era más especial que de costumbre, ya que era el último año en Michaëlle Jean. Parece mentira que hayan pasado casi tres años desde mi primer día. Por cierto, este año me dieron el premio a la perseverancia.

At school things have gone on wheels too. By then I had a good handle of all the subjects and we had started the activities to celebrate the end of the year, which was more special than in previous year, because it was our last year at Michaëlle Jean. It’s hard to believe that three years have gone by since my first day. By the way, this year I received the perseverance award.

Como el año pasado los abuelos llegaron a mitad de junio a pasar un par de semanas con nosotros antes de viajar a España. Para entonces ya hacía bueno y podíamos ir de paseo con ellos a muchos sitios.

Just as last year, Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves came in mid-June to spend a couple of weeks with us before going to Spain. The weather was good by then and we could go out with them to many places.

Por ejemplo, celebramos el cumpleaños de Diego en un parque de columpios en los árboles (fue un día un poco lluvioso todo hay que decirlo).

For example, we celebrated Diego’s birthday in a treetop playground (even though it was a bit rainy that day).

También fuimos al centro y a la isla en el lago Ontario, donde montamos en barco, visitamos la granja y el parque de atracciones.

We also went to downtown Toronto and the island in Lake Ontario, where we went on a boat, visited the farm, and the little amusement park.

Y al lago Wilcox a pasar la tarde en el parque acuático antes de vinieran papá y mamá a buscarnos.

And also to Lake Wilcox to spend the afternoon in the splash pad before daddy and mommy came to pick us up.

A veces veíamos los partidos el mundial. Mamá estaba emocionada porque Perú jugaba por primera vez en no sé cuántos años, y papá y los abuelos estaban pendientes de España, pero al final ninguno de los dos fueron a ninguna parte.

Sometimes we watched the World Cup games. Mommy was excited because Peru had classified for the first time in many years, and daddy and the grandparents were looking out for Spain, but in the end none of them went anywhere.

El Abuelo Pablo se empeñó en que aprendiera a montar bien en bici, así me llevaba a una calle sin salida a practicar bien los giros, y luego nos íbamos de paseo con la bicicleta al Mill Pond.

Grandpa Pablo was very keen on me learning how to ride the bike well, so he took me often to a cul-de-sac to practice turning, and then we went on to longer rides to Mill Pond.

Y si no, me montaba en cualquier bicicleta que nos encontrábamos por ahí.

Otherwise, I just climbed on any bicycle we ran into.
