Vaya con el coronavirus, el lío que ha montado. Lo que habrá hecho que hasta le han cambiado el nombre para ver si nos confunden, pero para mí seguirá siendo el coronavirus, el “corona” como lo llamaban por aquí, el que se cargó el colegio, las amigas y la vida social.
Talk about the
coronavirus, the mess it has created! What it must have done that even they
have changed its name to see if they distract us, but for me it will continue
to be the coronavirus, the “corona” as it as called around here, the one who
took down the school, the friends, and the social life.
Habíamos pasado un invierno tranquilo, sin contratiempos. El viaje a Perú
nos había recargado las pilas y las semanas pasaban deprisa. Nos gustó lo de
poder viajar sin muchos preparativos y ya estábamos pensando cuál sería el
próximo destino. Ya se hablaba del coronavirus, pero era algo extraño que
pasaba en China y poco más.
We had had a quiet
winter, without any setbacks. The trip to Peru had recharged our batteries and
weeks passed quickly. We liked having the chance to travel without much notice
and we were thinking where we could go next. People talked about the
coronavirus, but it was something odd that was happening in China, and little else.
No íbamos a ir a ningún sitio por las vacaciones de primavera, así que les dijimos a los abuelos que se vinieran a vernos y luego podían ir a visitar a los primos en Portland. Pero las cosas se pusieron feas. De pronto el coronavirus ya no estaba sólo en China, sino en Europa y en América también. Aún parecía algo lejano, pero ya no tanto. Suspendieron las clases de baloncesto, la NBA, los Estados Unidos prohibieron los vuelos desde Europa, y los abuelos llegaron en el último avión antes de que en España también cerraran las fronteras.
We didn’t have
travel plans for March Break, so we told Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves to
come visit and after they could go see the cousins in Portland. But things turned
ugly.
All of the sudden the virus was
not only in China. They stopped the basketball lessons, the NBA, the USA
stopped flights from Europe, and the grandparents arrived in the last flight
before Spain also closed its borders.
Pensábamos que sería cuestión de unas semanas, pero ya nada volvió a ser
normal. No volvimos al colegio después de las vacaciones de primavera,
suspendieron todas las actividades extraescolares, cerraron las tiendas, los
restaurantes, y básicamente nos quedamos encerrados en casa.
We thought it would
be a matter of a few weeks, but nothing went back to normal. We didn’t get back
to school after March Break, all extracurricular activities got cancelled, the
shops closed down, also the restaurants, and basically we were asked to stay at
home.
Lo bueno es que aún podíamos salir a pasear, y pasear se convirtió en uno
de nuestros quehaceres diarios. No es broma, mamá nos hizo un horario, que
incluía tiempo para hacer deberes del colegio, deberes con el abuelo Pablo,
leer y pasear. Había tiempo para jugar y ver la tele, pero pasear no era
opcional.
On the bright side,
we still could go out for walks, and walking became one of our daily chores. No
kidding, mommy made a schedule, which included time to do the school homework, homework
with Grandpa Pablo, reading and walking. There was time to play and watch TV,
but walking was not optional.

Pasaban las semanas y aunque todo seguía igual, hubo algunos cambios. Por ejemplo, el tiempo mejoró y pudimos dejar el abrigo verde en casa. También Diego aprendió a montar en bici y como la mía se me había quedado un poco pequeña, se la di a él y los abuelos me compraron una más grande. No fue fácil porque al parecer todo el mundo quería montar en bici, pero a fuerza de insistir lo conseguimos, y los paseos pasaron a ser en bicicleta.
The weeks passed by and even though everything stayed the same, there were some changes. For example,
the weather improved and we could leave the green coat at home. Also Diego
learned how to ride a bike and given that mine had become small for me, I gave
it to him and the grandparents bought me a bigger one. It was not easy as
apparently everyone wanted a bicycle, but by virtue of trying we got one, and
from then on our walks were by bike.
Los abuelos estaban bien con nosotros porque los números en España no tenían buena pinta. Había mucha gente enferma y allí la cuarentena era más estricta, pero se les hizo largo, porque no estaban cerca de sus amigos y aparte de pasear y jugar a las cartas con nosotros no había mucho entretenimiento. El abuelo Pablo se veía los deportes que daban repetidos en la tele y por suerte descubrieron el Netflix, que tenía series en español y les hacía un apaño.
The grandparents
were well with us because the numbers in Spain didn’t look good. There were
many sick people and there the quarantine was stricter, but it felt long,
because they were not with their friends and besides walking and playing cards
with us there wasn’t much to do. Grandpa Pablo watched taped sports on TV and
fortunately they discovered Netflix, which has Spanish shows and that gave them
something else to do.
Así que cuando mamá dijo que quería plantar plantas nuevas en el jardín,
se pusieron voluntarios los primeros. No sólo sembraron el césped y pusieron
las nuevas plantas, sino que a partir de ese día se dedicaron a regar las
plantas a diario.
So when mommy said
that she wanted to plant new plants in the yard they were first to volunteer.
Not only they sowed the lawn and planted the plants, but from that day on they
took care of watering them.
La rutina seguía parecida: deberes, leer, paseo, jugar, tele, pero con días más largos y más calurosos daba más ganas de salir, y los mismos paseos parecían diferentes con la vegetación y en la bicicleta.
The routine continued
to be the same: homework, reading, walk, playing, TV, but with longer and
warmer days we wanted to go out more, and the same walks looked different with
more vegetation and the bicycle.
Como estábamos confinados en casa y todo estaba cerrado a todos nos crecía el pelo. A la abuela, a mamá y a mí no se nos notaba mucho, pero los chicos necesitaron ayuda. Papá montó la peluquería en casa y les cortó el pelo al abuelo y a Diego, pero nadie se atrevió con él. Lo bueno es que le queda bien, y al final me parecía que podía cambiar de estilo.
Because we were
locked in at home and everything was closed everyone’s hair was growing. Grandma,
mommy and I could get by, but the boys needed help. Daddy established a little
hairdresser’s and took care of Grandpa and Diego’s hair, but nobody dared to
touch his. The good thing is that it looks good on him, and in the end I felt he
should keep the new hairstyle.
En junio los abuelos decidieron volver a España. Las cosas habían mejorado y tenían que ponerse al día con los médicos. A mí me daba mucha pena, porque ya me había acostumbrado a que estuvieran aquí todo el rato, pero quedamos en que en unas semanas nosotros nos reuniríamos con ellos en Mallorca a pasar unos días juntos en la playa.
In June the
grandparents decided to return to Spain. Things were improving and they had to
catch up with the doctors. I was sad, because I had gotten used to having them
here all the time, but we agreed that we would meet them again in Mallorca in a
few weeks and we could spend a few days on the beach.
Y ese era el plan hasta que en uno de esos paseos en bici me choqué con
Diego, me caí, y me rompí la muñeca. Vamos que la cagué. Lo único bueno es que
dicen que es una fractura pequeña y que si no hay contratiempo me quitaran la
escayola en cuatro semanas, y entonces podremos ir a la playa … si el coronavirus
nos deja, claro está.
And that was the plan
until in one of those bicycle walks I crashed with Diego, I fell, and I broke
my wrist. In short, I messed up. The only good news is that they say it is
small fracture and that without setbacks they will take the cast out in four
weeks, and then we can go to the beach … if the coronavirus allows, that is.
Porque sigue dando guerra. Nos han llegado noticias de Perú de que las cosas están mal allí y el tío Javier ha tenido que pasar casi dos semanas en el hospital. Por suerte se ha puesto ya bien y todo se quedó en un susto. Pero, de todos modos, a ver si esto se pasa pronto y el coronavirus se va por donde vino, porque esto no es normal. Echo de menos mi vida de antes.
Because it keeps causing havoc. We have news from Peru that things are not good there and Uncle Javier has spent almost two weeks in hospital. Fortunately, he has recovered and it was just a scare. But in any case, let’s hope that this goes away soon and the coronavirus leaves the same way it came in, because this is not normal. I miss my former life.
